UCL Play-off: Hoffenheim 1-2 Liverpool

Liverpool took a step towards the Champions League group stages with a 2-1 victory over Hoffenheim in the first leg of the tournament play-offs on Tuesday night.

After a lively start, achtzehn99 spurned the chance to open the scoring when Simon Mignolet saved Andrej Kramaric’s penalty at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena.

And it was the Reds who did the break the deadlock when Trent Alexander-Arnold grabbed his first-ever goal for the club with a sensational long-range free-kick on 35 minutes.

In a keenly-fought contest, James Milner came off the bench to net Liverpool’s second, finding the top corner via a deflection off Havard Nordtveit.

However, with full-time approaching, Mark Uth’s drive pulled a goal back for Hoffenheim to give the Bundesliga side something to cheer ahead of the return meeting at Anfield next week.

Jürgen Klopp elected to select the same line-up as the one deployed at Watford in Saturday’s Premier League opener, meaning Alberto Moreno retained his place at left-back ahead of Milner, while Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah led the three-man attack.

The first half…

Spurred on by their vocal support, Hoffenheim started brightly at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena.

Indeed, just six minutes had elapsed when Joel Matip was required to produce an excellent defensive header to deny Serge Gnabry the chance to open the scoring after Kramaric had escaped into space down the right and crossed dangerously into the centre.

Soon after, a delivery from the left at a free-kick required a combination of Dejan Lovren and Mignolet to scramble it to safety.

But on 11 minutes, Hoffenheim were awarded a penalty after Lovren was deemed to have brought down Gnabry. Kramaric stepped up to do the honours, but his kick was repelled by Mignolet, much to the delight of the away contingent housed in the corner.

The contest was being played at frenetic speed – and the Reds fashioned their first chance soon after when Salah was sent clean through from a Firmino pass after Kevin Vogt had conceded possession; however, the No.11 slid wide of the post under pressure from recovering defenders.

Liverpool were slowly growing into the game – and 10 minutes before the break, they opened the scoring in quite magnificent fashion.

A trip on Mane 30 yards out in a central position presented an opportunity to strike towards goal, and it was Alexander-Arnold who took control, curling the ball around the wall and into the bottom corner for his first ever for the club.

It was some way to mark his European debut on what was only a 14th senior appearance for the 18-year-old Scouser.

Hoffenheim threatened to level just before the break, but Mignolet reacted well to block Gnabry’s turn-and-drive before Sandro Wagner scooped the rebound wide.

Then, in stoppage-time, Lovren headed a Moreno corner inches wide of the far post as a fast-paced opening 45 minutes came to a close.

The second half…

Liverpool should have added a second goal to their tally within just 90 seconds of the re-start, but Firmino was left holding his head in his hands after his close-range swipe from Mane’s run and pass was kept out by Oliver Baumann.

Soon after, the home team’s goalkeeper was needed to repel a low drive from Mane as the Senegal forward’s pace continued to trouble Hoffenheim.

As the half progressed, the German side began to exert pressure on their guests in an attempt to restore parity; Gnabry hooked a half-volley wide on 66 minutes following a flurry of corners.

But Klopp’s men responded with Salah having a low shot turned away by the boot of Baumann before the custodian saved from a Lovren header at a corner.

The Reds had earlier replaced Jordan Henderson with Milner – and with 14 minutes left, the vice-captain struck a potentially decisive goal in the tie.

The Merseysiders broke forward at pace from a quickly-taken free-kick and Firmino spread possession wide to the No.7 in space on the left side of the area. His ball towards the back post struck Nordtveit and looped into the top corner.

With the game edging towards its conclusion, Mignolet did well to keep out Uth’s snap-shot inside the box, while Mane skewed wide when played in by Salah at the other end.

But, with just three minutes left of normal time, Uth did give Hoffenheim hope when he chested down a ball over the top and drilled low across goal beyond Mignolet to reduce the deficit.

Liverpool were required to see out some nervy moments before the full-time whistle, not least when Kramaric headed over the bar in injury-time from a free-kick, but they did enough to ensure they hold the advantage going into next Wednesday’s Anfield second leg.

Match Day: Watford 3-3 Liverpool

Liverpool were held to a 3-3 draw by Watford in their opening game of the Premier League season on Saturday.

The visitors twice fell behind at Vicarage Road, but goals from each of Jürgen Klopp’s front three - Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah - appeared to have been enough to earn a hard-fought victory for the Reds.

However, Miguel Britos netted in injury time to ensure Watford claimed a share of the spoils.

Mane’s fine strike equalised Stefano Okaka’s early opener, but Watford regained their lead before half-time through Abdoulaye Doucoure.

Two goals in the space of two minutes shortly after the restart - the first a Firmino penalty and the second a poacher’s effort from competitive debutant Salah - turned the match on its head, only for Britos to level deep into stoppage time.

Team news

Alberto Moreno started at left-back for the Reds, while Salah, Mane and Firmino were deployed in Klopp’s forward line.

First half

Having enjoyed the majority of possession early on, the Reds fell behind in the eighth minute.

Dejan Lovren did well to divert Roberto Pereyra’s shot wide but the resulting corner led to the opening goal, as Okaka powered home Jose Holebas’ inswinging corner with his head.

Little of note occurred in the following 20 minutes, but the game burst into life around the half-hour mark.

Mane finished off some slick interplay after he’d stepped over Moreno’s pass and been played in by a clever Emre Can ball. The No.19 darted in from the left and classily side-footed into the far top corner.

Liverpool’s parity lasted just two minutes, though. Tom Cleverley’s low cross was half-cleared by Trent Alexander-Arnold and Doucoure was on hand to lash in the loose ball from eight yards.

Mane went close to levelling again in stoppage time - the forward nodded Firmino’s corner narrowly wide with Heurelho Gomes beaten - but Klopp’s side went in at the interval behind.

Second half

A strong start to the second period felt crucial if Liverpool were going to get back into the game - and that’s exactly what they got.

Indeed, by the 57th minute, the Reds were in front.

First, Firmino sent Gomes the wrong way from the spot after the Watford goalkeeper had felled Salah as he raced onto the Brazilian’s perfectly-weighted pass.

Then, Firmino latched on to Lovren’s over-the-top pass and lifted the ball over the advancing Gomes for Salah to bundle home in front of a raucous away end.

Watford were rocking and the hosts had the woodwork to thank for keeping their deficit at one goal when Alexander-Arnold’s 65th-minute corner was flicked onto the crossbar by Joel Matip.

Gomes then denied Lovren with a fine reaction save from another dangerous corner from Alexander-Arnold and Salah fired a half-volley over the bar after excellent work from Moreno.

The Hornets regained something of a foothold, but Liverpool were a constant threat on the counter and Salah shot into the side-netting in the 77th minute after he’d been fed by Mane.

It looked like the lack of a fourth goal would matter not for the Reds, but Britos’ late, late header meant the Hornets snatched a point.

Match Preview: Hoffenheim v Liverpool (Champions League play-off first leg)

Tuesday's Champions League play-off first leg will be the first time Hoffenheim and Liverpool have met in the history of the two clubs, with a place in the group stages at stake for the winner of the tie.

To get the inside track on the story of Achtzehn99’s rise to prominence in Germany, Liverpoolfc.com spoke to Lutz Pfannenstiel, head of scouting and international relations for Hoffenheim and also the only player ever to play club football on all six continents.

At the turn of the century, Hoffenheim were a local amateur club playing in the fifth tier of German football and will now feature in the Champions League play-off stage for the first time after finishing fourth in the Bundesliga.

When asked to describe their remarkable journey, Pfannenstiel outlines the core philosophy which underpins Hoffenheim’s recent success.

“The club started to rise through the divisions from the year 2000 onwards,” he begins.

“In 2008 we finally reached the big goal to play in the highest tier of German professional football. The club’s philosophy is based on very strong youth development. The aim is to develop our own players from our academy to break into the first team.

“The recent years I would describe as learning how to be consistent and working hard to establish ourselves as a respected team in the Bundesliga.

“Last season we achieved our highest finish in club history and everybody in the club is excited to finally play European football.”

With the likes of Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund leading the way, the competition in Germany is intense.

So how does a relatively smaller club such as Hoffenheim compete with these teams? The answer lies in youth and developing from within.

“We have completely different financial possibilities [to these other clubs]. We need to keep on investing in our youth structure and we clearly see ourselves as a development club,” Pfannenstiel continues.

“It is normal that the big clubs will buy some of our top players, like a few months ago when we lost the two German internationals, Rudy and Sule, to Bayern Munich.

“However, we have enough talent in our academy and with Alexander Rosen, a very smart sporting director who will find more young talents ready to make the next step.”

One of the players to have moved on from Hoffenheim in recent years is, of course, Roberto Firmino.

Since joining Liverpool in the summer of 2015, the Brazilian has established himself as a key part of Jürgen Klopp’s side and took on the iconic No.9 jersey for the new season.

Having worked with the forward since his early days at Hoffenheim, Pfannenstiel reveals what it is that makes him such a special player.

“Roberto is a typical example for our philosophy. We found him in Brazil as a youngster when not many people knew about him,” he recalls.

“Firmino put a lot of extra work in, the coaches developed him into a top player and it was normal for us that he moved to a huge club like Liverpool.

“Firmino is not a typical Brazilian player – he took on a lot of the German mentality and I believe that his way of playing football fits perfectly with Jürgen Klopp’s style.”

Despite impressing since his arrival in England, Pfannenstiel believes we have yet to see everything Firmino has to offer, with plenty more still to come.

“I believe Roberto has already proved that he is a top player – but trust me, he will get even better,” he adds.

With Hoffenheim having lost only four Bundesliga games in 2016-17, the challenge awaiting Klopp and his players in their Champions League play-off is clear.

But what has been the reaction to the draw from the other side?

“The first reaction was, of course, ‘Why Liverpool?’, but looking at it realistically, I think it is a special draw,” says Pfannenstiel.

“Every player must be burning to play at Anfield. It is the biggest game in our club’s young history. Most experts see the Reds as the big favourites, but at the end of the day we are not travelling to Liverpool just to listen to You’ll Never Walk Alone. If you reach this point in the competition then you want to go all the way.

“Jürgen Klopp is a legend in Germany and is already on his way to becoming a legend in England. But at the end of the day, it is not Klopp versus a German club – it is Liverpool against Hoffenheim.

“It’s impossible to pick a single player who stands out – the whole squad is brilliant.”

While Klopp is a renowned figure in Germany following his time at Dortmund, Hoffenheim’s own German manager is forging a reputation as one of the leading young coaches in Europe.

Upon taking over in February 2016, Julian Nagelsmann became the youngest manager in Bundesliga history.

With Hoffenheim struggling and in danger of relegation, he led the team to seven wins in their final 14 matches to avoid the drop, and built on that momentum with a fourth-place finish last term.

Pfannenstiel emphasises just how pivotal the manager has been in turning the club’s fortunes around.

“Julian Nagelsmann is an outstanding coach. He has the unique talent to make every single player better,” he says.

“Since he took over we didn’t just start to win games, but we also started playing very attractive football. To play European football just underlines what an impact Julian Nagelsmann has had.”

The evolution of Hoffenheim has seen the club cemented as a fixture in the top tier of German football, with the next aim being to break into Europe.

Having risen through the divisions in such a short space of time, how do Achtzehn99 take that step?

For Pfannenstiel, it’s a case of staying true to the trusted methods which have worked so far – and to ensure that last season’s achievement becomes a regularity, not just a one-off.

“It is very difficult to top last season, but I think it is important that we continue to play the same kind of football and then the results will come naturally,” he concludes.

“It is vital to establish ourselves as a top-half side in the Bundesliga – but there is no point in creating unnecessary pressure by setting too many expectations.”

Premier League Asia Trophy: Liverpool beats Leicester City for the trophy

Liverpool rounded off their tour of Hong Kong by winning the Premier League Asia Trophy with a 2-1 victory over Leicester City on Saturday.

Islam Slimani headed the Foxes into an early lead from close range; however, Philippe Coutinho and Mohamed Salah combined magnificently to enable the former to nod in an equaliser soon after.

Coutinho then got himself on the scoresheet with a stunning finish prior to the break, cutting in from the left and drilling into the far corner to ensure it was the Reds clinched the pre-season friendly tournament trophy.

In front of a near-40,000 crowd, a sizeable majority of which there in support of Jürgen Klopp’s side, Liverpool began strongly.

The zip of the Reds’ attacking play was raising decibel levels and causing Leicester problems, and Coutinho had Kasper Schmeichel worried with a trademark curler after just three minutes on the clock.

However, firmly against the run of play, the Foxes grabbed an early lead; after opening up their opponents down the left, Christian Fuchs delivered to the back post, where Slimani powered a header into the net from point-blank range.

Nevertheless, Liverpool didn’t waste any time restoring parity – and they did so via a goal of outstanding quality.

Initially collecting the ball wide right, Salah swapped passes with Trent Alexander-Arnold before moving inside. He then laid it square to Coutinho and continued to dart into the box.

The Brazilian took a touch before scooping a pass into the path of his teammate’s run, and Salah did the rest by heading beyond Schmeichel.

Then, 10 minutes before half-time, the Reds went close to taking the lead. Kasper Schmeichel’s punch under pressure at a Coutinho free-kick dropped invitingly for Georginio Wijnaldum, but his hook back towards goal bounced just wide of the upright.

Klopp was forced into a change just before the interval, with Alberto Moreno taking the place of James Milner due to a knock, but Coutinho gave cause for cheer when he struck a second with a trademark piece of quality.

Picking up possession on the left, the No.10 ducked and weaved his way beyond Leicester challenges before arrowing an unerring effort across goal and into the far corner.


However, that advantage could have been wiped out twice inside the opening three minutes of restart.

First, Jamie Vardy moved into space inside the box and steered his shot across goal but wide of the post, before he was thwarted in a one-on-one situation by Loris Karius on the edge of the area soon after.

At the other end, substitute Marko Grujic hooked a half-volley over the crossbar with an acrobatic effort, while Liverpool required another new introduction to the contest – Ragnar Klavan – to pull off a saving challenge to prevent Vardy from steering home a leveller after he’d again wriggled into a dangerous position.

There were to be no further opportunities of note for either team as the game edged towards its conclusion in sweltering conditions, meaning the Reds were the team lifting the Premier League Asia Trophy before heading back to Merseyside.

Premier League Asia Trophy: Liverpool 2-0 Crystal Palace

Dominic Solanke and Divock Origi scored as Liverpool booked a place in the Premier League Asia Trophy final with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace in Hong Kong.

The second-half substitutes found the target with a sweetly-struck low drive on the turn and a close-range finish late on respectively to secure the result.

Jürgen Klopp’s side were in the supremacy for the majority of the contest at Hong Kong Stadium and fully merited progression to a meeting with Leicester City on Saturday.

Liverpool took authority from the off, using possession neatly as the Eagles adopted a deep backline and invited pressure.

And the first real chance was created in the 13th minute courtesy of a well-worked passing exchange between Ben Woodburn and Trent Alexander-Arnold on the right edge of the box.

Daniel Sturridge’s clever movement fooled Scott Dann into allowing space for a strike that the Palace defender quickly recovered to block.

The Reds No.15 tried to lay on a goal three minutes later, drawing cheers from the crowd for an impudent flick back into Adam Lallana’s path from Jordan Henderson’s diagonal pass, but his teammate shot off target.

And the sold-out crowd – almost exclusively Liverpool fans – showed their class when the clock reached 21 minutes – paying tribute to Lucas Leiva with huge applause after the Brazilian left the club on Tuesday.

Mohamed Salah’s ability to burst past defenders was a regular feature of the half and the summer signing sent an effort swerving wide after cutting in to shooting territory.

For all of their dominance, though, Liverpool were indebted to Simon Mignolet’s reactions on 27 minutes as Andros Townsend slipped in Keshi Anderson, free inside the box, and his hit on the turn found the goalkeeper an obstacle.

Salah might have had a tap-in having knocked the ball around Dann with space to attack in behind but the centre-back committed a blatant foul to stop the Egypt international.

Sturridge then drew a diving save with a low prod from the left of the area towards the far corner and the half-time whistle was blown with the score still goalless.

There were a host of changes made in three stages by Klopp in the early minutes of the second half, with Mignolet the only player to continue on.

Among those introduced was Philippe Coutinho and it wasn’t long before the No.10 had combined at pace with James Milner to open up a trademark step infield and shot – only, his drive flew too high on this occasion.

Solanke, on the other hand, was clinical in the 61st minute.


Coutinho prompted the move with a pass into Origi outside the box and though the Belgian’s clip to his fellow forward presented a shooting chance, there was plenty still to do.

Yet Solanke made the conclusion look simple, his subtle turn and touch preceding a thumped finish on the angle across the face of goal – his first strike for the club.

Marko Grujic was inches away from doubling Liverpool’s lead with a typically fierce blast from around 25 yards, but Origi soon did from close range on 79 minutes to ensure his team’s place in Saturday’s final.

Midfielder wants to leave Leipzig for Liverpool

Liverpool target Naby Keita may have dropped a huge hint he sees his future at Anfield.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has pinpointed RB Leipzig midfielder Keita as a key element of his summer squad strengthening plans as he prepares for a return to the Champions League.

Liverpool are prepared to spend £70million on the Guinea international, who was voted the second-best player in the Bundesliga last season after helping his side finish runners-up to champions Bayern Munich.

While Keita has reportedly informed Leipzig of his desire to move to Liverpool, his club have been consistent in their public pronouncements the 22-year-old is not for sale at any price.

But the player has reignited speculation over his preferred route by 'liking' an Instagram post that includes him being mocked up in a Liverpool shirt.

Keita was congratulated by the guineebuzz account on being named the African player of the season following a vote on website StarAfrica's Orange Football Club, sponsored by the mobile phone operator.

Included in the montage was a photo of Keita in a Liverpool shirt along with his inclusion playing for the Reds in the FIFA 17 video game.

New Liverpool signing Mohamed Salah was among the players Keita beat to the award.

Pre-season friendly: Tranmere 0-4 Liverpool

Jürgen Klopp declared himself satisfied with his side's workout and performance as Liverpool recorded a 4-0 win at Tranmere Rovers in their first pre-season friendly of the summer.

The Reds struck twice in each half to secure victory at Prenton Park on Wednesday night, with goals coming from James Milner, Marko Grujic, Pedro Chirivella and Ben Woodburn.

Klopp elected to give 22 players a runout as his men took to the field for the first time in 2017-18 – and afterwards, spoke of his contentment with the display.

Liverpool ready to compete for Mbappe

Liverpool will go head-to-head with Arsenal in an attempt to pull off the most spectacular and unexpected transfer in their history should Kylian Mbappe decide to move to England rather than Real Madrid.

The French teenager is now the most wanted footballer on the planet and Jurgen Klopp is determined to be part of the conversation should Monaco agree to sell their star striker before the start of the season.

Liverpool have reportedly seen a staggering €100million offer for Monaco starlet Kylian Mbappe rejected as they step up their pursuit of the youngster.

There’s no denying that the 18-year-old is the most in-demand player in Europe this summer, as after his exploits last season, he has stolen the attention of every top club around the major leagues.

With 26 goals and 14 assists in 44 outings in all competitions, Mbappe was crucial in helping Monaco win the Ligue 1 title as well as reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

There is a broad expectation 18-year-old Mbappe will go to Real Madrid, who have the finances to outbid any competitors. It is rare for any player to reject the overtures of the Bernabeu club once they have been identified as the number one target. It is difficult for any player to say no when Madrid call and French media have today reported meetings between Mbappe and Real coach Zinedine Zidane in which he has been assured of a starting place.

But Liverpool, like Arsenal, have investigated whether Mbappe would prefer a move to the Premier League at a club where he can be guaranteed game time and patience. It is felt career progress rather an immediate desire to become a Galactico is Mbappe’s priority, even if Madrid remain clear favourites and the most likely winners of the pursuit.

Should Mbappe decide it is too soon to move to the Spanish giants, Liverpool are prepared to spend big to get him. Unlike Arsenal, they could be playing Champions League football this season, although they also know Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea would make rival offers if what currently seems like a fantasy evolved into reality.

The Reds are monitoring the situation and have registered their interest in the player.

Liverpool to spend £70million on a Guinea international midfielder

Every player has their price. But sometimes that price is very high. Very high indeed.

According to German newspaper BILD this morning, Naby Keita could cost Liverpool around £70million to prise from RB Leipzig.

The Bundesliga club are determined not to sell, and the price-tag reflects their stance.

Jurgen Klopp has made Keita a priority target as he looks to add to his options in the centre of midfield this summer.

The Bundesliga ace has put in a series of impressive performances this season, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists in just 29 league starts.

His fine performances have helped Leipzig qualify for the Champions League after finishing as runners-up to title winners Bayern Munich.

Jürgen Klopp has identified the 22-year-old central midfielder as a key target after completing the £39million club record signing of the Egypt international Mohamed Salah from Roma last week.

Despite Leipzig’s sporting director, Ralf Rangnick, and chief executive, Oliver Mintzlaff, publicly insisting that neither Keïta nor the Sweden forward Emil Forsberg will be sold, Leipzig are believed to be demanding £70million for Keïta, who joined for around £10million last year.

“It would be negligent to give away one of our key players now,” Mintzlaff said last week. “Emil and Naby are both extremely talented players with a lot of potential. We are delighted that we as a club can keep up with their development and that we can prove ourselves in Champions League in the upcoming season.”

That sort of figure is likely to price the Reds out of a move but it remains to be seen if Liverpool can negotiate that figure down.

Oxlade-Chamberlain set for Liverpool move

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will continue the Anfield spending spree with a £30million move for Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The Kop boss completed a £39million deal for Roma winger Mohamed Salah on Thursday and, has now set his sights on raiding the Emirates for the Gunners' England midfielder.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, 23, has just 12 months left on his contract and has become frustrated at the club’s lack of talks over a new deal — and with not being a regular starter under Arsene Wenger.

Jurgen Klopp is a known admirer and is set for a busy summer as he attempts to build a squad capable of challenging both in the Premier League and in Europe where the Reds are back in the Champions League after a two-year absence.

Arsenal’s wage bill is expected to rise significantly as the club look to strike deals with influential duo Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

The club will therefore be forced to save money through player sales and it is claimed Olivier Giroud could follow Oxlade-Chamberlain out of the exit door in the coming months.

Arsenal are set for an overhaul of their own and are under pressure to cut their wage bill in the wake of the Premier League's new cost control measures that are coming into force this summer.

The rules say that a club’s wage bill should not be more than £7million more than it was in 2016-17, or £19million more than from the 2012-13 season.

If it does increase beyond that limit, the money can only come from external sources such as player sales, ticketing or commercial money, rather than Premier League central funds.

This means the money will have to be found in player sales this summer, not just of fringe players, but first-team players too.

Olivier Giroud is another who could follow Oxlade-Chamberlain out with Napoli joining Marseille and West Ham monitoring his situation. Jack Wilshere is another who could leave after spending last season on loan at Bournemouth but his wages may prove a stumbling block to a permanent move.

There are plenty of fringe players likely to depart, including Calum Chambers, Wojciech Szczesny, Chuba Akpom, Kieran Gibbs, Lucas Perez and Carl Jenkinson but Hector Bellerin is set to stay with the Gunners telling Barcelona that the Spanish right back is not for sale at any price.

Sport Bild in Germany says Liverpool are still in contention to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after Borussia Dortmund's deal with Paris Saint-Germain fell through.

Dortmund want Aubameyang's future sorted by the end of July and if no transfer can be agreed by then he will stay in Germany.

Meanwhile, former Liverpool player John Aldridge has urged Virgil van Dijk to go on strike to force through a move to Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp's side publicly apologised to Southampton and ended their interest in the Netherlands international earlier this month after accusations of tapping up.

But Aldridge believes Liverpool could resurrect a deal for Van Dijk if the player makes it clear he wants to leave St Mary's.

And one more line from the Daily Mirror, who claim Klopp wants to sign four key players this summer, after Salah.

The Liverpool boss has reportedly prioritised a central midfielder and centre-back and each could cost considerably more than the Egypt international.

Naby Keita is his top midfield target, while Leonardo Bonucci, Jerome Boateng and Kalidou Koulibaly are under consideration after the failed attempt to sign Van Dijk.

The final piece of the puzzle will be a new left-back to replace Alberto Moreno.

Liverpool complete signing of Mohamed Salah

Liverpool Football Club have completed the signing of Mohamed Salah from AS Roma.

The 25-year-old agreed a long-term contract with the Reds on Thursday after completing a medical. He will officially become an LFC player on July 1, 2017.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the move was sealed, Salah said: “I’m very excited to be here. I’m very happy.

“I will give 100 per cent and give everything for the club. I really want to win something for this club.

“We have a great team and very good players. I was watching the games last year and everyone was giving 100 per cent to win something.

“Everyone can see the coach gives everything. I hope to see that together we can give everything to win something for the club, for the supporters and for us.”

Salah scored 29 goals in 65 appearances in Serie A across two seasons with Roma.

The Egyptian, who has also previously represented Basel, Chelsea and Fiorentina, has been capped on 52 occasions by his country since 2011, scoring 29 goals in that time.

Liverpool set to seal Salah transfer

Liverpool expect to sign Mohamed Salah before the end of the week, with the winger due to have a medical on Merseyside before completing a £35m transfer from Roma.

Salah left his native Egypt on Tuesday and is likely to have his medical at Liverpool’s Melwood base. Personal terms are believed to have been agreed with the 24-year-old.

The deal will bring to an end a period of negotiations between Liverpool and Roma that began at the start of the month and saw the Serie A club reject an initial £28m bid. With Jürgen Klopp determined to sign Salah an increased amount, which could rise with add-ons, was eventually offered.

Signing Salah represents a case of second time lucky for Liverpool, who wanted the player in 2014 only to see him move to Chelsea instead from the Swiss club Basel. He struggled to make an impact at Stamford Bridge, however, and in 2015 moved to Italy, joining Fiorentina on loan before moving to Roma, also on loan, soon after.

That became a long-term move last August and Salah has subsequently flourished for the Giallorossi. In the 2016-17 Serie A season he scored 15 goals and assisted 13 others in 31 league appearances.

Klopp believes Salah can provide Liverpool with an injection of pace in their frontline, something all but absent when Sadio Mané is unavailable, and such is the manager’s keennees to acquire the player that Liverpool are poised to make him the joint most-expensive signing in their history, following the £35m spent on purchasing Andy Carroll from Newcastle United in January 2011.

Liverpool ready to break the bank for Dortmund's striker

Liverpool are reportedly prepared to pay Borussia Dortmund £61.2m (€70m) for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gabon international has long been linked with a move to Liverpool in the past but Dortmund have always resisted any approaches.

But reports in France claim Liverpool are willing to break the bank to land the talented striker this summer.

French publication Le Parisien suggest owners Fenway Sports Group are prepared to fund Jurgen Klopp's spending spree during the transfer window and Aubameyang is one of his targets.

Aubameyang worked under Klopp during the German's time in charge of Dortmund where they won the DFL Supercup twice.

Liverpool's chances of signing him are also boosted by the fact the striker is open to the idea of a move to Anfield, Le Parisien claim.

The Reds have Champions League football on offer this term - something they have been unable to lure the 28-year-old in previous attempts.

Aubameyang, who scored 31 goals in the Bundesliga last season, is under contract with Dortmund until 2020.

Klopp is a long-term admirer of Aubameyang and is thought to be on the lookout for a new striker this summer.

Liverpool up their bid for Sporting winger

Liverpool will launch a €50 million (£43.7m) bid for Sporting winger Gelson Martins, according to reports in Portugal.

A Bola claims that Jurgen Klopp’s side have already had an offer in the region of €40m (£35m) turned down by Sporting.

But Liverpool are going to make a renewed effort to sign the Portugal international with a bid that’s close to the 22-year-old’s €60m (£52.5m) release clause.

Last week, reports in Portugal claimed that Manchester United had entered the race to sign Martins as Jose Mourinho is also on the hunt for a new winger to bolster his squad ahead of the club’s return to the Champions League.

Liverpool, however, are hopeful that their new offer will convince Sporting president Bruno de Carvalho to sell.

Martins was one of Sporting’s standout players last season as he scored six goals and registered nine assists in 32 league appearances.

Liverpool also remain in talks with Roma to sign Mohamed Salah and although a £90,000-a-week contract has been reportedly agreed with the Egypt international, the two clubs are yet to agree a fee.

Roma told Liverpool to add another £10million into their bid

Liverpool have been told to add another £10million onto their bid to land Mohamed Salah — or forget it.

The Reds have resurrected talks with the winger’s club, Roma, after having an initial bid of more than £26m turned down.

But on Wednesday, as ­negotiations intensified and were confirmed by their sporting director Monchi, Liverpool were warned that “Roma is not a ­supermarket” and the Italians will set the price.

We understand that the price is around £35.5m — and the ­Premier League side will be told it is a take-it-or-leave-it deal for the Egypt international, who has been identified by Jurgen Klopp as the pacy wideman his system needs.

Monchi was adamant his club would also not be selling ­defender Antonio Rudiger.

And they are in the driving seat when it comes to ­dictating a price for Salah — though Monchi did concede they will sell when the ­bidding reaches their ­valuation of the player.

“It is true that there is a bid for Salah from an English club, but the price is made by Roma, so we will decide, depending on the ­circumstances,” he said.

“Roma does not want to sell players, Roma wants to build the best team for our goals — we are not a supermarket. Only for Salah is there a deal. Rudiger will not leave, there is zero chance.”

Roma, though, have issues relating to Financial Fair Play rules and must raise around 40m euros by the end of June.

That could see them ­accept a bid of £31m, with £5.5m in add-ons.

Liverpool know there are no rival offers for Salah at the moment and will not rush to ­increase their bid.

The 24-year-old, who had a brief, ill-fated spell at Chelsea, has told Roma that he wants a move to Anfield, and his ­fellow Egypt international Mido insisted earlier this week that the deal will be pushed through.

“Salah will definitely move to Liverpool, it’s just a matter of time - Liverpool’s style suits him perfectly,” said Mido. “But I fear for him coping with the tempo of the Premier League.”

Liverpool are considering alternatives, with Sporting winger Gelson Martins an option.

But the ex-Chelsea man remains their top target with a deal around £90,000-a-week thought to have been agreed.

Napoli wants £61million from Liverpool for their Polish midfielder

Liverpool and Tottenham have both reportedly stepped up their interest in Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski.

Jurgen Klopp intends to beef up his Liverpool squad, as they gear up for Champions League football, providing they win their play-off match first.

A midfielder has been identified as a priority, and Zielinski is a long-standing target.

Tottenham, similarly, are exploring the market for midfield options, with Mauricio Pochettino looking to build on their fabulous campaign last term as they finished runners-up to Chelsea in the Premier League.

And, with Christian Eriksen on Barcelona's radar, the need for an attacking midfielder could be greater for the north London outfit.

Recent reports suggested Real Madrid were considering a move for Zielinski, with Zinedine Zidane an admirer.

But according to Italian paper Il Mattino, Liverpool and Tottenham have both lodged £25million bids for the 23-year-old.

The report says Napoli could reject these bids as the club think he is worth his £61m buyout clause.

Last September, Zielinski admitted he held talks with Klopp before rejecting a move.

He said: “There were days when I was walking out of home, looked into my mobile and I didn’t know what to do.

"I spoke a lot with Konrad Golos and Tomasz Dawidowski – my managers from the agency representing me.

"Everyone said: ‘Great offer, Klopp wants you, it’s a fairytale in terms of finances’. All fine, but I wasn’t convinced.

“I was driving my car and I said to my girlfriend: ‘No, red light, I’m not leaving’.

“I felt great in Empoli, I didn’t want to leave the lads when we were battling for the European places.”

Audi Cup 2017: Napoli, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Liverpool

SSC Napoli have been confirmed as the fourth team that will compete in the Audi Cup this summer, joining Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid.

The tournament, which will be held at Allianz Arena on August 1 and 2, will see the Reds tackle hosts Bayern in their opening game.

Napoli will take on Atletico in the day’s earlier clash, with the winners of those matches meeting in the following evening’s final, while the losers will go head-to-head in the third/fourth-place play-off.

Advance sales for the pre-season showdown between four European heavyweights have already begun, and tickets are highly coveted. In 2015, Allianz Arena was sold out for the tournament, with 140,000 spectators attending across both days.

The Audi Cup premiered in summer 2009 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Audi brand. Since then, the tournament has been held every two years. Bayern Munich have won it three times, while Barcelona were victorious in 2011.

Liverpool link with Porto left-back

Liverpool have been linked with another left back with Porto's Rafa Soares the latest man in the frame.

Strengthening a position where James Milner filled in impressively last year is on the wish list at Anfield this season with Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon originally high on the list of possibles.

But with the 17-year-old expected to stay in London, with a switch to Spurs favoured, the Reds have had to cast their net further afield.

Soares has spoken highly of Liverpool although he is also hopeful of making a break through at Porto, where he has not made a first team appearance yet.

Instead he spent last year on loan at Rio Ave, whom he helped to a seventh placed finish in Portugal's Primeira Liga, making 32 league appearances and 38 in total. He also collected three goals and five assists.

The 22-year-old came through the youth system at Porto, is a Portuguese youth international and also spent time on loan at second tier Coimbra at the start of 2016.

"I know I've been followed by English clubs especially after our campaign," Soares told Omnisport.

"Liverpool are a great club and to be linked is an enormous honour for me. I followed Liverpool from a young age and I shiver every time I listen to You'll Never Walk Alone, it's unique!

"Liverpool are famous and popular in Portugal where people value the history of a club. I'm naturally flattered, but I'm a Porto player and focused on succeeding here."

Soares also spoke about his desire to impress new Porto coach Sergio Conceicao who took over in June.

"My main goal is to establish myself and get first-team football. I feel ready and confident that after my last season I will be given a chance.

"I keep my feet on the ground and focus on climbing my way up one step at a time. Fans support and trust me to become a symbol of the club, as I have been here for over 10 years and feel Porto in my bones.

"In 2015-16 it was rumoured Conceicao wanted me to join him in Vitoria Guimaraes – where he was coach at the time – which may mean he trusts and believes in me."

Porto though recently became the only club to be punished by UEFA for a breach of Financial Fair Play rules this year.

The club, runners-up to Benfica in the league and knocked out of the Champions League by Juventus in the last 16, agreed a four-year settlement deal which includes a 700,000 euros fine (possibly rising to 2.2m euros) and a restriction on their Champions League squad from next season.

Liverpool and Chelsea to battle for Porto starlet

Liverpool and Chelsea will face off for Porto midfielder Ruben Neves, according to A Bola in Portugal.

Neves, 20, has already skippered his club and is one of the most highly-rated youngsters in Europe.

His deal has just two years remaining contains a buyout clause of €40million and according to the Portuguese outlet, he is already intimating that he wants to follow Andre Silva through the exit door.

Neves is currently on Under-21 duty with Portugal and both Chelsea and Liverpool are said to be keen on bringing him to the Premier League.

Porto are demanding a fee of around £30million for the highly-rated youngster, however, so a summer deal for Antonio Conte or Jurgen Klopp will not come cheap.

Both Manchester United and Arsenal expressed a strong interest in Neves last year but a move to England never materialised.

Any developments on his future are likely to be on hold for the coming weeks with Neves on international duty with Portugal's Under-21s.

Derby agree fee for Liverpool defender

Derby have agreed a fee to sign Andre Wisdom from Liverpool that could rise to £4.5m, Sky sources understand.

The Rams will pay more than £2m up front for the 24-year-old, who must now agree personal terms and pass a medical.

Derby saw an initial offer of £2m rejected earlier on Tuesday before talks continued.

Wisdom, who spent last season on loan at RB Salzburg in Austria, enjoyed a season on loan at Derby four years ago and he is keen to return, with Gary Rowett a key factor in that decision.

His former club Bradford are also due to benefit from the deal, as they agreed a 10 per cent sell on fee when Wisdom initially moved to Liverpool as a youngster.

Wisdom is set to become Derby's second signing of the summer following the transfer of Curtis Davies from Hull City.

Wisdom, who won an Austrian league and cup double with Salzburg, has not made a first-team appearance for Liverpool since featuring against Swansea City in September 2013.

Kylian Mbappe has revealed he is more "obsessed" with winning the Champions League than the Ballon d'Or.

The 18-year-old forward helped steer Monaco to the Champions League semi-finals in the 2016/17 season, attracting attention from Manchester United, who qualified for next season's competition after winning the Europa League.

Liverpool have entered the race to sign him, according to national newspapers, while Arsenal are also reportedly interested in a move for the France international, but the club's failure to finish in the Premier League's top four could ultimately cost them in any transfer after Mbappe identified his main goal.

"[The Champions League] is a dream, a competition that everyone wants to win and that only a minority can win - the most important are the titles," Mbappe told Telefoot.

"That would be much more of an obsession for me than the Ballon d'Or, for example. I want to touch the stars and, when you dream, you do not dream of playing the middle of the table or maintaining it."

Mbappe could line up against Premier League defenders on Tuesday night when France take on England in a friendly at the Stade de France.

Despite earning just three caps for France so far, the teenager - who scored 24 goals for Monaco last season - is already setting sights on the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

"[The World Cup] is the number one goal at international level," Mbappe added. "As I always say, dreams are good but it's up to me to work for them."

Liverpool new signing fires Three Lions into Under-20 World Cup finals

Sheyi Ojo helped to create two goals as England reached the FIFA U20 World Cup final for the first time with a 3-1 victory over Italy on Thursday.

The Liverpool winger was brought on as a substitute nine minutes into the second half of the semi-final in South Korea, where Dominic Solanke – who has agreed terms to join the Reds on July 1 – struck the first and third for his country.


England trailed when Ojo entered the action and the 19-year-old had already hit a post before his cross forged a chance for Solanke to equalise from close range.

Another delivery from Ojo led to the second goal for the Young Lions, converted by Ademola Lookman, and Solanke sealed their comeback win in the 88th minute.

Reds midfielder Ovie Ejaria was an unused substitute.

England will now face Venezuela in the tournament’s final on Sunday, to be played at the Suwon World Cup Stadium.

Liverpool legend backs Klopp to sign Bundesliga star

Liverpool look set to bolster their attacking options this summer.

Liverpool have been linked with Sporting Lisbon's Gelson Martins and Roma wide man Mohamed Salah.

But Nicol's reckons Costa should be a top target.

"I'll take him at Liverpool absolutely," he told ESPN FC.

Jurgen Klopp's shown he can sort out young players so absolutely.

"The guy's got ability, no question. Considering the quality he's got and he's not quite matured yet, I'm sure most coaches think they can turn young players around.

"I think he would be a good signing for Liverpool."

European football expert Raphael Honigstein says the Bundesliga champions will be willing to let him leave the Allianz Arena.

Costa immediately impressed at Bayern Munich having switched from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2015, but has since struggled to nail down a regular starting place under Carlo Ancelotti.

The 26-year-old Brazil international scored seven goals and provided nine assists in all competitions over the past season.

With his speed and versatility, he would certainly fit the bill regarding Klopp's requirements.

German news outlet Bild have stated Liverpool are tracking the £35million-rated Costa, but they're not alone.

Juventus, Manchester City, Manchester United and, inevitably, Tottenham Hotspur are among those also being linked.

The Saints add more twist into Liverpool transfer target

Southampton have hiked up their asking price for Liverpool transfer target Virgil van Dijk to £75million, reports say.

That is after the Saints reacted furiously to Liverpool’s pursuit of their captain which lead to the club reporting the Reds to the Premier League.

Liverpool’s approach for Van Dijk is now being looked at by the Premier League, but there is no official investigation as of yet.

Van Dijk has made Liverpool his first-choice destination after rejecting interest from Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Liverpool are still confident they can seal the deal, but Southampton have informed them of a major change to Van Dijk’s price tag.

Southampton were initially asking for a fee between £50million and £60million, but now want a figure closer to £75million.

It is potentially a huge blow to Liverpool, but the Reds are hopeful Van Dijk’s influence can help turn back the tide in their favour.

Reports that Jurgen Klopp met personally with Van Dijk have angered Southampton and prompted them to contact the Premier League.

Van Dijk would be by far the most expensive defender in history should Liverpool pay £75million for his services.

The Netherlands international is Klopp’s No.1 target as he looks to sure up a consistently fragile defence.

The Liverpool Echo claim Southampton will make it as difficult as possible for Liverpool to sign their skipper.

Southampton want a bidding war and will encourage Chelsea, Arsenal and City to revive their interest.

Liverpool are looking at alternative targets to Mohamed Salah.

Sky Sports claim their pursuit of Salah have hit the rocks (due to his £35million valuation), and Jurgen Klopp is exploring the possibility of bringing winger Gelson Martins to Anfield.

The Portugal international has been watched by Liverpool representatives and could be tempted by a Premier League switch.

Martins, 22, has a £46.5million release clause in his current contract - although it's claimed Sporting Lisbon will accept £40million.

The winger produced seven goals and 14 assists in all competitions last season.

That quality would likely see him fit in well under Reds manager Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool are in need of quality reinforcements this summer as they prepare for a campaign in the UEFA Champions League and look to sustain a title challenge in the Premier League throughout next season.

Martins has the pace and trickery you'd expect from a promising young winger, but it's clear he possesses real end product given his excellent assist record.

While his goal record isn't overly inspiring, it's equally worth noting he only started 25 matches in all competitions, so 13 strikes overall isn't a bad return.

He still needs to prove he can be a prolific goalscorer, but if brought in relatively cheaply he could be an astute buy.

Liverpool also have joined the race for out-of-favour Real Madrid forward James Rodriguez, according to reports in Spain.

A lack of game time has led to suggestions he will be playing his football elsewhere next term with Manchester United mooted as his next destination.

But Spanish publication Don Balon claim Liverpool are ready to battle their rivals for his signature.

Madrid chief Florentino Perez is refusing to lower his £52million valuation of the Colombian that has proved to be stumbling block in negotiations with United - but Liverpool are reportedly willing to meet his price tag.

Already moves have been made to sign a winger, with Roma's Mohamed Salah the priority.

But, for a variety of reasons, Jurgen Klopp couldn't quite bring a new wide midfielder to Anfield.

Now, as the summer transfer window prepares to swing open, the Reds boss isn't going to make the same mistake twice.

The Bayern Munich winger is keen to make a move this summer having struggled to earn a regular spot under Carlo Ancelotti.

And Bild claim several clubs have been sniffing around including Liverpool and Tottenham.

Juventus, Manchester City, and Manchester United are also mentioned.

However they are looking at alternatives and Costa appears to be one of those.

German publication Bild claim he is on Jurgen Klopp’s radar.

Klopp has already agreed the signing of Dominic Solanke, who will arrive on July 1, but he wants a forward who can go straight into the team.

And Salah and Costa fit the Klopp prototype of fluid players who can play anywhere in the front line.

Costa would cost around £35million - a similar fee to Salah - but Liverpool would face competition from a number of clubs.

The deal to take Salah from Roma is in the works with wages of £90,000 a week said to be agreed, but a an agreement with Roma still to be reached.

Liverpool have reportedly joined Manchester United in the race to sign Real Madrid star James Rodriguez.

The Colombia international looks set to leave the Bernabeu after struggling for game time under Zinedine Zidane.

And Spanish outlet Don Balon say the Reds are now among the clubs interested in snapping him up.

Liverpool are willing to match his £52million price tag, while the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Bayern Munich are also keen.

However, the 25-year-old is said to favour a move to their fierce rivals United instead.

Rodriguez rose to prominence at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and enjoyed a fine first season in the Spanish capital thereafter, but he struggled during the 2015-16 campaign and hasn't reached the same heights this season, either.

Team-mate Isco has been the more consistent of the two during his limited appearances, however. He's consequently played more when injuries have opened up a spot in the starting XI.

The belief is Rodriguez could return to his best with consistent playing time, something he likely won't find in Madrid. Spending £65 million on the Colombian would be a risky move and uncharacteristic of the Reds, who have been more careful with their spending under manager Jurgen Klopp when compared to other top Premier League clubs.

Solanke made his senior debut for the London side as a substitute in a Champions League tie in October 2014, and scored seven goals in 25 Eredivisie appearances during a productive loan spell with Dutch outfit Vitesse Arnhem in 2015-16.
He has represented his country at every age level from U16 to U21 and is currently in South Korea for the FIFA U20 World Cup, where the forward has so far featured in all three games and scored once to help England into the knockout stages.
Solanke, twice an FA Youth Cup champion and winner of the UEFA Youth League and U17 European Championship, will officially join Jürgen Klopp’s squad on July 1.‎

Liverpool switching transfer targets after Roma rejection

Roma have rejected a £28m bid from Liverpool for Mohamed Salah.

The winger has agreed personal terms with Liverpool, but Roma have remained firm on their £35 million asking price.

Jurgen Klopp has now begun considering other options and have lined up a few alternatives.

The 24-year-old signed for fellow Premier League side Chelsea in January 2014, but left on loan to Fiorentina in 2015, before signing permanently for Roma in a €15m transfer last summer after a loan spell at the club.

While Chelsea only paid £11m to sign Salah from Basel, Liverpool could have to pay almost triple that for the forward, who scored 15 goals in Serie A last season.

He also grabbed 11 assists in the league over the last campaign, as Roma finished second.

Liverpool refuse to pay over the odds for Salah and do not believe he is worth the £35 million Roma are demanding.

Roma president Jim Pallotta addressed Liverpool's interest in the player earlier this week when saying there was “nothing in it at the moment”.

It is an excellent return for a right winger and Liverpool see him as the perfect man to add some much-needed pace and width to their side.

Liverpool also need to expand their squad and add depth in quality with the Champions League on the horizon for the Reds.

Liverpool made their first signing of the transfer window this week, with Chelsea's Dominic Solanke to join the club on July 1, when his contract with the Premier League champions expires. The fee will be set by a tribunal but is expected to be in the region of £3m.

Virgil van Dijk wants transfer to Liverpool

Liverpool are preparing to make Virgil Van Dijk the most expensive defender in the world after the Dutchman decided he wants a summer move to Anfield.

Now the Merseyside club will test the resolve of Southampton to keep the 25-year-old international, who is likely to cost a record £60 million should he leave in this transfer window.

Southampton have indicated they are ready to fight to retain Van Dijk and feel they can resist any offers.

Van Dijk is one of the most in-demand players ahead of the transfer window, which officially opens in July 1.

Chelsea and Manchester City have also been strongly linked with a move for the 25-year-old.

It’s a huge boost for the Merseyside club, who had made Van Dijk their top summer target after their leaky defence almost cost them a place in the top four of the Premier League and Champions League qualification.

Van Dijk will become Liverpool’s highest-paid player if the move goes ahead and can expect to earn as much as £200,000 a week. His fee is sure to eclipse the current world record for a defender - the £50 million paid by Paris St Germain for David Luiz in 2014.

The onus will now switch to the negotiations between Liverpool and Southampton.

Liverpool have become accustomed with dealing with Southampton every year for the last few seasons, securing Sadio Mane in 2016 having earlier recruited Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne and Rickie Lambert from the club.

Goal Highlights: Liverpool 2-1 Sunderland

Liverpool reclaimed second position in the Barclays Premier League and closed the gap to leaders Chelsea to a single point with a 2-1 victory over Sunderland at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Steven Gerrard broke through the away side's stubbornness via an outstanding set-piece with moments remaining in the first half, then Daniel Sturridge doubled the advantage minutes after the restart with the help of a deflection.

Substitute Ki Sung-Yeung capitalised on too much space from a corner to the back post on 76 minutes to set up a nervy finale, but the hosts warded off the threat of a damaging equaliser to take the three points.

When teamsheets were handed in to the referee, the one bearing Liverpool's name confirmed that Brendan Rodgers had selected exactly the same starting XI and substitutes as the group that racked up a 6-3 victory over Cardiff City last weekend.

Glen Johnson and Philippe Coutinho both crashed long-range efforts high over the crossbar during the opening exchanges, before fans waited in expectancy as Luis Suarez braced over an inviting free-kick from 20 yards - but the ball travelled narrowly over the crossbar.

Next it was Sturridge's turn to train his sights from distance - off target from the right corner of the Sunderland area - and the No.15 was then unfortunate not to successfully redirect an outside-of-the-boot cross from his strike partner at the far post.

The Reds were dominating possession but finding the visitors difficult to break down, which prompted Joe Allen to unleash a drive after completing a one-two with Suarez, but that too was no danger to Vito Mannone between the posts.

Attempting to take matters into his own hands, the Reds' top scorer set off on a lengthy dribble which concluded with a left-footed punt shortly after the half-hour, but once again there was little to concern the Sunderland goalkeeper.

The home fans were in uproar when Santiago Vergini was shown merely a yellow card when he hauled down Suarez as he bore down on goal, but their annoyance quickly turned to joy when Gerrard stepped up to curl over the wall and past Mannone in the 39th minute.

Premier League Result: Fulham 2-3 Liverpool

Steven Gerrard struck the winner as Liverpool fought back from a double deficit at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night to claim a sensational 3-2 victory from their challenging Barclays Premier League encounter with Fulham.

The deadlock was broken in unexpected fashion on the evening as Kolo Toure unfortunately diverted a cross beyond his own goalkeeper, although Daniel Sturridge registered for the seventh consecutive league match for 1-1.

Kieran Richardson re-established the Londoners' lead in the second half by capitalising on another defensive error, but the Reds hauled themselves level once more courtesy of Philippe Coutinho's accurate conversion from distance.

But the stage was set for the skipper in the closing seconds, stepping up to dramatically convert from 12 yards after Sturridge had rightly been awarded a penalty for a late challenge by Sascha Riether.

One hour before kick-off, it was confirmed that Brendan Rodgers had selected an unchanged starting line-up for the fourth consecutive fixture; fit-again Daniel Agger was named among the substitutes, while Academy talent Joao Carlos Teixeira was included for the first time.

Are Liverpool a genuine title contender?

Jose Mourinho claims Liverpool are the title-race danger-men because they are the one contender not liable to a spring meltdown.

Chelsea boss Mourinho believes the imminent return of the Champions League could destabilise any of the current top three.

Echoing comments he made in December, The Special One said: "People are asking if Arsenal might fall apart after what happened at Liverpool, but it can happen to any one of the three of us - any one - but not Liverpool, because they have this stability of playing one match a week.

Moving on, Brendan Rodgers is emerging as a manager capable of mixing it at the top of the table. He is now cast as the strong leader of a confident group. Thankfully, the envelopes have been put back in the drawer.

   "We might be the chihuahua that runs in between the legs of the horses," Rodgers said post-Fulham.

My Liverpool Experience

One of the things on my bucket list that I have always wanted to do was to go and see a Liverpool match at Anfield. Ever since I can remember I have watched Liverpool FC on the television but have never actually been to a game live. In December last year I decided to fulfil this dream and get Liverpool tickets for the game against Cardiff. Tickets for this game were the cheapest for the season and therefore I decided this was going to be the game. I made the trip from London to Liverpool the night before so I would get the full weekend in the city. This is my experience in Liverpool for the weekend. 

Liverpool Nightlife
Liverpool has a fantastic nightlife especially at weekends and has been voted ‘the best city night to go out in’ for many years on the row. Concert Square is a great place to go out and is always extremely busy and has a very large concentration of bars and clubs all located next to each other. Even though I don’t drink alcohol I decided to go into a few of these bars to see what it was like and I fully enjoyed myself and the atmosphere was great. I fully recommend that anybody not from Liverpool go to the city for an evening, as it is great.
 
The Beatle Story
Aside from Liverpool FC, the city of Liverpool is famous for The Beatles. No trip to the city would be complete without a visit to famous museum. The Beatles Story tells the journey of how 4 local lads from Liverpool joined together and became the biggest band in the world. Fans from all 4 corners of the planet visit this museum and often in the summer queues can be big but for my visit there was no major crowd. Once again, this is a must visit place in Liverpool.

 
The Game
A life long dream was to always sit in the famous Kop Stand and be with all the big Liverpool flags and banners. My ticket was exactly in this stand and the game was great in which we eventually won 3-1 with Suarez scoring 2 and Sterling scoring 1 respectively. This season we have played our best football in a long time and you can feel that in the atmosphere, from the first minute until the last everyone was singing. This truly was an experience I will not forget and so much so I plan on taking my close friend to the Liverpool v Arsenal match in a couple of weeks.
