Liverpool are ready to make Chelsea a swap deal

There are growing speculation that Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas is keen on reuniting with former FC Porto man Raul Meireles and Kenny Dalglish maybe tempted to consider an offer for the Portuguese international, just as long as Liverpool get striker Daniel Sturridge in return.

Raul Meireles The heavily tattooed Portuguese midfielder has seemingly fallen out of favour with Dalglish – he only came on a substitute during last Saturday's 1-1 draw with Sunderland at Anfield – and, given the club's excessive collection of central players, is now available for transfer.

Chelsea are frustrated over their attempts to sign Luka Modric from Tottenham Hotspur and with the manager, Andre Villas-Boas, acutely aware of Meireles's talents from their time together at Porto a move for the 28-year-old does seem plausible. Liverpool will, though, want close to £12million for the player. There is also growing speculation that Israeli international Yossi Benayoun could be used as a makeweight in the pursuit of Luka Modric.

Dalglish is keen to bolster his defensive option with the sales of Meireles, with Bolton’s Gary Cahill and Birmingham’s Scott Dann heavily linked to Anfield.

Chelsea are looking to add creativity to a midfield that has a great deal of brawn in the shape of John Obi Mikel, Ramires and Michael Essien but not so much in the way of forward momentum aside from ageing Frank Lampard and youngster Josh McEachran.

Although, Liverpool are keen to bolster its defensive options before the transfer window closes. Dalglish would also like to purchase a forward to cover for January signing of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll. A possible swap deal or cash plus Meireles for Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge maybe on the card.

Sturridge will not be keen to spend the season on the Blues bench having experienced a taste of regular Premier League football whilst on loan at the Reebok Stadium last term and the 21 year old may be keen on any move that brings him nearer to first team football.

If the rumour are to be true on Bolton interest in Frenchman David N’Gog and he could be offloaded to the Reebok Stadium.

Is Dann the right man for Liverpool?

According to the press, Liverpool FC has made enquiries to Birmingham City on the availability of Scott Dann. Beside, the 24-year-old England defender, Liverpool has been linked with numerous centre-backs in the last two months.

Scott Dann Dann was a player who was definitely tipped to be heading to the Premiership after Birmingham City were relegated at the end of last season.

In the media, he was quoted £8million but I’m doubted it that Birmingham would let him got at that figure. He is young and a British player, the Blues will want a piece of the pies. The Blues will be holding out for a fee in the region of £12million.

Kenny Dalglish already have defensive woes four days before the new season kick-off with Martin Skrtel sidelined on calf-injury, Glen Johnson picked up a hamstring strain during the pre-season and Daniel Ayala on the verge of moving to either Swansea or Hull City in the coming week. Things are not looking so good at the back for Liverpool.

Although, I’m impressed with Scott Dann when he performed for Birmingham last season. If Liverpool do make a serious bid for him, he would provide a good quality cover and put Carragher, Agger, Kyrgiakos, Wilson and Skrtel more competition for the centre-back slot.

I would expect Birmingham City to invite a bidding war between Liverpool and Arsenal as the Gunners are looking for a centre-back for the injured Laurent Koscielny.

Is Scott Dann, the right man to marshal Liverpool defence next season? Leave your thoughts on the comment box below.

Rumour Mill: Liverpool gearing up for a defender swoop

Kenny Dalglish Kenny Dalglish is working hard to shipped out the deadwoods at Anfield to refill his transfer kitty for at least one more new player before the new season kick-off.

Liverpool FC are weighting their option on moving Joe Cole to QPR and are keen to reduce their wage load. Milan Jovanovic, who are certain to be moving to the Belgian club after Liverpool agreed terms with Anderlecht on Tuesday evening.

A woeful pre-season defensive display from Liverpool FC which saw them leaking three goals each against Guangdong FC, Malaysia XI, Hull City, Galatasaray and Valerenga. With Martin Skrtel out on a calf injury, the 26-year-old played every minute of the Merseyside club's Premier League campaign last season, but has suffered with the injury during pre-season.

Dalglish would like to sign a new centre-back as cover for his team and Scott Dann and Ryan Shawcross names has been recently linked with a move to Anfield.

Elsewhere, reports has indicated Hull City manager Nigel Peearson are interested in signing Liverpool centre-back Daniel Ayala. The Tigers have made six signings already this summer but are still keen to add the 20-year-old to their ranks.

Dalglish is believed to rate Ayala in the £1million bracket but it is not known whether Hull agree with that valuation.

Now signing a new centre-back would be the top priority for Dalglish as Jamie Carragher and Sotirios Kyrgiakos are over 30-years-old. While Daniel Agger are injury prone and only left Academy graduate Andre Wisdom who recently signed an extension contract as cover plus Danny Wilson available for selection. If the Hull’s story are to be true, then Liverpool are freeing up the centre-back slot for a new player soon.

Rumour Mill: Time to patch up Liverpool defence

After his team's woeful defensive display in pre-season, Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is looking to beef up his options at the back and is reportedly considering a bid for Stoke City skipper Ryan Shawcross.

Ryan Shawcross The Reds conceded 12 goals in four pre-season games and Dalglish is well aware that if his side is to match expectations of a top-four finish, he'll have to strengthen the department.

Shawcross has been a regular for Stoke over the past four seasons and has helped manager Tony Pulis build his defence at the Britannia Stadium. He also scores his fair share of goals for a centre-back. The 23-year-old harbours hopes of a place in the England national squad and a move to Anfield will help him do that.

Shawcross could be of immense help to a Liverpool midfield, as it consists of Daniel Agger whose injury problems make him unreliable and Martin Skrtel who has a calf problem and missed the entire pre-season. And with both Jamie Carragher and Sotirios Kyrgiakos on the wrong side of 30, a young addition to the backline becomes a necessity.

Shawcross isn’t the only available option for Liverpool to choose from. Birmingham City's central defender Scott Dann, pursued most of this transfer window by the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, is reportedly set to be bid for by the Reds as they look to bolster their defensive ranks.

A fee of around £12 million has been mooted as Birmingham may be forced to sell to recoup some money after owner Carson Yeung's assets were frozen following his arrest in Hong Kong.

Stoke City to beat Liverpool and Arsenal for Birmingham defender

The Birmingham centre-half is a summer target for a number of Premier League clubs after slipping out of the top flight with the Blues last season.

Scott Dann Stoke are among those leading the chase and hope to steal a march on their rivals by making an early move.

It is understood that a bid has been lodged and talks between the two clubs have begun.

The Potters can, however, expect to face stiff competition for Dann, with the race for his signature set to hot up.

Aston Villa are preparing to make an approach, with new boss Alex McLeish having worked with the highly-rated 24-year-old during his time at St Andrews.

Long-term suitors Arsenal and Liverpool are also believed to be readying moves, with Arsene Wenger and Kenny Dalglish in the market for defensive reinforcements.

Video Highlights: Liverpool 5-0 Birmingham

Maxi Rodriguez scored a hat-trick as Liverpool kept their European qualification hopes alive with a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Birmingham City at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

The Argentinean put the Reds into a seventh-minute lead, capitalising on Ben Foster's fumble from Jay Spearing's drive to tap in.

Dirk Kuyt then continued his fine goal scoring run with Liverpool's second soon after, netting at the second attempt after his initial effort had been blocked.

Maxi furthered the home side's lead midway through the second period by steering Luis Suarez's cross into the goal at close quarters before wrapping up his treble with a composed finish.

Substitute Joe Cole completed the rout late on when his mazy run and shot deflected into the back of the net.

The result is the Reds' biggest home victory of 2010-11 so far and moves them to within three points of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, though the Londoners have a game in hand.

Liverpool went into the game aiming to end a seven-year itch against Birmingham having not mustered a league win over the second city side since May 2004. [Read more…]
