Video: Liverpool 2-0 Valencia
Pre-season: Liverpool 2-0 Valencia
Andy Carroll was on target as Liverpool concluded their pre-season programme with a 2-0 win against Valencia on Saturday evening.
The No.9 fired in at the second attempt after just six minutes before substitute Dirk Kuyt bundled in a late clincher as Kenny Dalglish's side warmed up for next week's curtain-raiser with Sunderland in style.
The Reds played some vibrant attacking football at times and the added bonus of a clean sheet will have left the squad buoyed heading into 2011-12.
On what began as a sunny afternoon in L4, Fabio Aurelio's first appearance since May was the subject of the pre-match natter as a trio of the club's new recruits were also handed their first Anfield experience in a red shirt.
Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson were all starters as the boss looked to use the encounter as a dress rehearsal for the showdown with the Black Cats.
The visitors arrived in the early stages of their preparations for 2011-12 and the opportunity was there for Liverpool to make a fast start.
An exquisite flick from Alberto Aquilani had the Kop purring early doors before Downing and Henderson combined to tee up an almighty goalmouth melee that Los Che just about survived.
Next it was Aurelio's run and pass that released Downing once again but the winger's teasing, low cross just evaded Carroll in the centre.
There was a definite feeling in the air that Liverpool weren't far off an opener and on six minutes they were handed the initiative.
David Albelda under hit a woeful back pass allowing Carroll to rampage in on goal. The England forward saw his first shot rebound back off the post via Diego Alves's fingertips and had to follow in to tuck home from a tight angle.
It was the perfect start for King Kenny and co but there joy was soured just moments later when Glen Johnson was forced off through injury.
The visitors had barely set foot in the Reds half at the quarter of an hour mark but finally gave a warning of their quality on the break when Mehmet Topal came close to diverting a left-wing cross beyond Pepe Reina.
Liverpool responded and Henderson let fly with a low effort from distance before Carroll once again took advantage of a defensive error, but this time his shot was too tame to beat Alves.
The frustration seemed to get the better of the England man who responded by launching into a late challenge on Adil Rami that may well have resulted in more than a yellow card in a competitive encounter.

Liverpool to sign Valencia winger
According to reports in Spain Juan Mata looks set to be the next big signing to arrive at Anfield as Liverpool switch their sights to the wings after completing the signing of Midfielder Jordan Henderson.
The 23 year old Spaniard has spent the last four seasons with Valencia after arriving at the Mestalla Stadium from the Real Madrid B team however he has long been linked with a move to Liverpool firstly under Rafa Benitez and now under Kenny Dalglish.
Mata would add some genuine creativity to the wing, something that has been missing at Anfield for a long time, and last season scored 8 goals and created 12 as Valencia claimed 3rd spot in Spain despite selling David Silva and David Villa.
Mata is rated around the 20 million mark and given that Liverpool appears to have a sizeable transfer budget this summer, a move could be on the cards.
Mata is currently on duty with the Spanish under 21 side at the UEFA under-21 European Championship, where he is tipped to one of the stars of the show.

Liverpool to enter bid for £38M striker
Liverpool will make an official approach to sign Valencia forward, David Villa, according to the Spanish press. Just a day after Villa revealed to the Spanish television that he’ll not leave Spain at the moment.
"A week ago my future was clear and now it's not.,”
"I've been through some tough moments, which are partly my own fault, but I decided to put it all aside and I've not thought about it in the last five days.
"When I said I had taken a decision it was true, and this decision is that next season I will play in Spain because it is the league that is best for me.
"I will not go abroad." – David Villa, Spanish television statement.
If this rumours are true. We wonder where Rafa got the money to funds such a move? Could it be the co-owners, who finally pumping in the money? George Gillet Jr., Liverpool’s co-owner, has recently sold his US assets, Montreal Canadiens, his National Hockey League franchise in a deal worth £330million to Molson. Tom Hicks are still continues to search for a buyer for his Texas Rangers baseball franchise.
All of the worst possibilities, Rafa has agrees to sell Xabi Alonso, Alvaro Arbeloa, Sebastian Leto and Charles Itandje. The four players’ fees can be recouped and it’s known to be worth £42million altogether.
Liverpool will have to contest with Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea for Villa’s signature. Can Liverpool snap up the most on form striker on the planet and forms the most lethal striking partnership in the Premier League?

Liverpool issues an official statement for duo
The growing speculation and rumours from the press linking Liverpool’s midfielders has blown out of proportion. Those stories published on the press has affected the players and therefore Liverpool Football Club has issues an official statement on liverpoolfc.tv website.
Below are the following statement taken from LFC’s website;
"Despite repeated media speculation on the futures of Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano, Liverpool has received no official approach or offer from any club regarding the players.
"Neither is for sale and furthermore Liverpool has no interest in the long list of Spanish based players being linked with a move to Anfield as part of any deal."
Until any concrete offers has been received by Liverpool, so in another words translated from the statement above are “So you f@#*ing idiots, stop printing all those nonsense.”
David Silva, Alvaro Negredo, Alberto Bueno or Samuel Eto’o can stay where there are at the moment as Liverpool are not interested with them at the moment.

Liverpool withdraw bid for £30M Spaniard
The Daily Post reported that Liverpool has pull out of the interest in Valencia’s midfielder after the Los Che outfit demands £30million.
As we all aware, Rafa Benitez is given £20million to spend on new players this summer by the co-owners. Unless, Rafa can offload some of the players in time before Real Madrid and Barcelona enters the bidding war.
Valencia deep in financial crisis with almost £500million in debt need to cut loose of its star players.
"It is true that we were asking about the situation with him but we are not happy with the situation now and he will not be a target for us.
"We have to work hard and we are trying to have conversations and trying to progress but it’s not easy to sign any player now.
"The most important thing now is to make progress with the contracts of our own players.
"We are working hard on that because this is our priority." – Rafa Benitez, Daily Post.
Rafa also squashed any speculation on David Silva’s team-mate Raul Albiol. The Valencia defender was not on Liverpool shopping list despite speculation suggesting otherwise.
"He is another good player but he is not our target," – Rafa Benitez, Daily Post.
Liverpool will not do business with Valencia, if they do not reduce the transfer fee for David Silva.
Do you think David Silva worth £30million? My opinion, he should be tagged in the region of £20-24million.

Liverpool to swoop in on a £20M transfer target
Today’s most potential transfer rumour that gets likely to materialise this summer is the transfer of David Silva to Liverpool FC.
David Silva has refused to comment on speculation that he will either join Liverpool or Real Madrid this summer.
"I have to be focused first on recovering [from a thigh problem] to be able to help my team and I'm not thinking of anything else,” said Silva, as Valencia prepare to face Athletic Bilbao for a place in the Europa League.
"I don't know anything about the rumours and I insist that I have a contract with Valencia that I wish to fulfil." – David Silva, Setanta Sports.
Silva has been linked with a move to Anfield for the past 18 months now. Certainly, we do need to fine-tune the squad with a player who can linked up the midfield and attack. With Valencia in deep financial crisis, no Champions League football for them next season. The Mestalla outfit will need to sell its prized assets to stay on the business.
A player in the calibre of David Silva wouldn’t want to settled for a second fringed Europa League. To be not involved in the biggest club competition in the world, will most likely to increased his desire to leave La Mestalla.
Will Rafa move in on the £20 million midfielder? Only time will tell, who knows maybe Rafa can picks up a bargain or two from his former employer.
