Luis Suarez is the wanted man in the summer

Despite Luis Suarez insisted on staying at Merseyside, all depends on how the contract extension negotiation between Suarez and Liverpool this summer.

luis suarez According to Italian publication Il Tempo, AS Roma have joined the battle for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

Suarez has been an instant hit with Liverpool supporters since he made the switch from Ajax last year but has had his desire to stay in England tested after a string of controversial incidents.

Rumour Mill: Liverpool wants another Suarez

Liverpool are plotting to sign Anderlecht forward Matias Suarez and pair him with namesake Luis in an all-South American strike force.

Matias Suarez Comolli is believed to have watched the striker a number of times this season, but is wary of Anderlecht’s hefty price tag.

Several English newspapers this morning report the speculation, also linking the 23-year-old to Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United.

Anderlecht manager Herman van Holsbeeck has revealed of host of top sides are trailing the forward.

“There are 15 top clubs prepared to pay the money we want for Suarez and the fee could be higher than the money we received from Chelsea for Romelu Lukaku last year,”

“Matias could have gone to Russia in the winter and also Juventus, but his wife Magali did not want to go,”

“Do I think Suarez is worth more than Lukaku? Well, technically he is a better player.”

Comolli was responsible for the recruitment of Luis Suarez, who has been a huge hit, but many signings made by Liverpool’s American owners have not brought the same value for money.

Suarez’s agent, Jorge Cyterzpiler, told press earlier this month “The player has attracted interest from clubs in England and Italy.

“Liverpool have been spoken about but both Manchester clubs are also watching him. Juventus also have a chance to sign him.

“In April I will be in Italy to discuss his future. In the summer he will certainly move on but Anderlecht won’t let him go for cheap.”

While Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, no doubt have the finances to bring in Suarez, they are wary about over-spending, having already forked out an estimated £115 million on recruiting new players during Kenny Dalglish’s short reign as Liverpool boss.

Dalglish blames fatigue for Wigan loss

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish blamed tiredness, injuries and refereeing decisions for the 2-1 defeat by Wigan, their fifth loss in six league games.

"Every single one of them is capable of passing to someone in the same colour shirt," Dalglish told BBC Sport.

"But I think the toll of three games in six days took the edge off them a little bit.

"It doesn't matter how good you are, you still need to have a bit of bounce of the ball with some decisions."

Dalglish did not elaborate on which decisions he was unhappy with, but Wigan had taken the lead from the penalty spot after Martin Skrtel's challenge on Victor Moses was deemed to be dangerous.

And, after Luis Suarez had equalised, the Uruguayan thought he had given his team the lead, only for the goal to be disallowed for handball.

Shortly afterwards, Gary Caldwell then slotted in the winner for Wigan in front of The Kop.

With Craig Bellamy, Charlie Adam, Daniel Agger and Glen Johnson all injured, Dalglish was short of options to freshen up a side that beat Stoke City in the FA Cup on Sunday before losing 3-2 at QPR on Wednesday night.

"We are not going through the best run of having players available to us," said Dalglish.

"But, if we do have designs on stepping forward, we need to learn how to manage three games in six days.

"If that is the schedule, we have to live with it and we have to have a stronger squad to be able to handle it."

With so many injuries, Dalglish chose to include teenager Raheem Sterling in his squad and he came off the bench to become the club's third youngest debutant at 17 years and 97 days.

But the Scot said that he would prefer not to have had to use the youngster.

"It's not fair on him," said Dalglish. "He's a good player and a good lad but we're going to have to manage him.

"He might have enjoyed getting on the pitch but I don't think it's the way forward for us."

Pre-Wigan press conference: Dalglish want to finish the season in better position

Kenny Dalglish insists Liverpool have made progression this season - but accepts his side need to be more clinical in front of goal if they're to take the next step forward.

The Reds take on Wigan Athletic on Saturday aiming to bounce back from a midweek defeat at Queens Park Rangers in which they conceded three times in the final 13 minutes to lose 3-2.

Dalglish doesn't believe fatigue contributed to the result - but feels his side could have made certain of a win had they been able to finish off the numerous chances they created at Loftus Road.

He told journalists at Melwood: "The performance the other night was excellent for 77 minutes and then we lost three goals, but we were delighted with the way they played.

Match Preview: Liverpool v Wigan

lfcvwigan Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish will expect a reaction from his players when they host Wigan Athletic in the English Premier League.

On Wednesday Liverpool led 2-0 away to struggling Queens Park Rangers, but conceded three times in the final 13 minutes to lose 3-2 at Loftus Road.

Aside from winning the Carling Cup, it's been a disappointing season for Liverpool. A lacklustre offense, which has been prone to extended droughts, has caused headaches for players and fans alike. Upgrading the attack should be the Reds' top priority during the summer.

Wigan continues to battle for its Premier League life. The Latics currently sit in the relegation zone, three points behind QPR for the final safe position. They have a brutal schedule featuring Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea down the stretch, so an extraordinary effort will be necessary.

Such inconsistency has left Liverpool seventh on the table, seven points back from the Europa League qualification places, and seemingly firmly out of contention for Champions League qualification.

Liverpool will at least gain a spot in UEFA's second-tier competition due to their Carling Cup victory over Cardiff City, but there remains work to do if Dalglish is to orchestrate a return to the club's former glory days.

Liverpool Probable Line-up: Reina; Carragher, Coates, Skrtel, Enrique; Henderson, Spearing, Gerrard (c), Downing; Carroll, Suarez

Wigan Probable Line-up: Al Habsi; Boyce, Alcaraz, Caldwell, Figueroa; Moses, McCarthy, McArthur, Maloney, Beausejour; Rodallega

Post Match Video: Dalglish loss of words on QPR defeat

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish says he and his staff have "no explanation" for how his side allowed QPR to come back to win 3-2 at Loftus Road.

The Reds boss believes his side were "easily deserving" of their 2-0 lead, and he could not see a goal coming against them before Mark Hughes's team scored three times in the final 13 minutes.

Dalglish suggests that the home side may have got the "luck they never got at Bolton", where a QPR goal was not awarded despite the ball clearly crossing the line.

Video Highlights: QPR 3-2 Liverpool

qpr v liverpool A brilliant goal from Sebastian Coates was little consolation as Liverpool surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Queens Park Rangers.

The defender might never forget his first strike in English football, an acrobatic volley to open the scoring at Loftus Road, but after Dirk Kuyt made the score 2-0, the hosts mounted an incredible comeback to boost their chances of Barclays Premier League survival.

Shaun Derry, Djibril Cisse and Jamie Mackie all fired in the final 14 minutes and the Reds left West London feeling robbed.

The Liverpool team included Luis Suarez and Martin Kelly, both of whom had recovered from knocks that forced them from the pitch against Stoke City. They and the rest of the players donned t-shirts during the warm-up with messages of support for Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba as he continues to recover from a cardiac arrest.

The action then commenced and it was Liverpool who seized the initiative, a mistake from Nedum Onuoha allowing Suarez to charge unobstructed towards Paddy Kenny. But for once a player whose unpredictability is perhaps his greatest asset was outwitted, and the goalkeeper saved.

Anton Ferdinand then had to rescue his teammates, who'd been unlocked by a Kelly through ball that presented Stewart Downing with a chance.

Match Preview: QPR v Liverpool

qpr v liverpool The last time this two teams met at Anfield, Liverpool emerged victorious with Luis Suarez scoring the only goal in that match in December 2011. Queens Park Rangers will now host Liverpool at Loftus Road, many betting site are favouring Liverpool to beat QPR and get more Football Betting Tips from Betfair for this match.

Despite changing managers and spending heavily in January in order to secure Premier League survival, Queens Park Rangers find themselves rooted in the relegation zone with just 10 games remaining.

For Mark Hughes' side, the situation is now approaching critical. The London outfit also have the toughest run in, on paper, of any of the sides near the foot of table, with games still to come against Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham, Chelsea, and Manchester City, not to mention an in-form Swansea side.

And things will not be easy for QPR on Wednesday, up against Liverpool.

Liverpool have put their hat-trick of League defeats firmly behind them, but it won’t be far from typical if they were to slip up at Loftus road. After convincingly defeating Everton in the League through a Steven Gerrard hat-trick, Liverpool did well to grind out a narrow win against Stoke City in the FA Cup.

Luis Suarez has recently shown his eagerness to sign a new contract, which has come as a major boost for the club at a time when speculations around his transfer had grown enough to unsettle everyone at the club. However, Dirk Kuyt admits he may be forced to leave if he isn’t offered more first team opportunities; whether Dalglish reacts to that is to be seen.

Team news

Adel Taarabt is back in contention for QPR.

Playmaker Taarabt missed Rangers' controversial defeat at Bolton 10 days ago with a hamstring strain but has had plenty of time to recover.

Injury-plagued striker DJ Campbell is back in training and could return early next month, as could top scorer Heidar Helguson (groin).

Defender Glen Johnson and forward Craig Bellamy are both likely to miss out for Liverpool.

The former has not played since the Carling Cup final victory over Cardiff last month while Bellamy has sat out the last two matches.

Centre-back Daniel Agger is still recovering from a broken rib.

FA Cup: Liverpool 2-1 Stoke City

A sensational strike from Luis Suarez helped Liverpool book a place in the FA Cup semi-finals.

The Reds beat Stoke City 2-1 at Anfield, with Stewart Downing netting the winner after a controversial Peter Crouch goal cancelled out the stunning opener.

A trip to Wembley is the prize for Liverpool less than a month after they triumphed there in the Carling Cup final.

The game got underway following a round of applause in support of Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba as he receives treatment in hospital.

Kenny Dalglish made just one change to the team that beat Everton 3-0 on Tuesday, Maxi Rodriguez replacing Jordan Henderson. And it was the Argentine who mustered the first attempt on goal after three minutes, nodding marginally over the crossbar from a Steven Gerrard free-kick.

Stoke responded with lofted passes to top scorer Crouch, and though most of his headers were won, Liverpool were usually smart to the second ball.

The match was developing into a nondescript encounter until 23 minutes, when Suarez received possession midway inside the Stoke half. The No.7 found Maxi, who returned the pass first time before watching Suarez control and then thunder into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Video: Post Everton match interview with Dalglish and Gerrard

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish did not have the words to add to the existing acclaim of Steven Gerrard after his hat-trick heroics in the Merseyside derby.

Everton were defeated 3-0 at Anfield on Tuesday night, with England international Gerrard getting all three goals to end his club's three-game losing run.

It was a sweet return for the midfielder, who had missed the loss to Arsenal with a hamstring injury and only featured as a substitute in the weekend defeat at Sunderland.

And Dalglish, who has also seen his captain miss a large chunk of the season with a groin problem, claimed to not have the vocabulary to add further praise of the Kop idol.

But Liverpool's manager did also want to point to the performances of the likes of Jamie Carragher, Jay Spearing and Martin Kelly against Everton.

“All the local boys were fantastic for us,”

“Steven with a hat-trick - I'm not educated enough to add to the fantastic comments he has had before,”

“Jay Spearing was fantastic, (so were) Carragher and Kells' (Kelly) at right-back,”

“Obviously Steven getting three goals was a great reward for him,”

“He has had one or two bumps this season with injuries and to come back and get three in a local derby, I'm sure there will be a wee smile on his face,”

“I think it is a great reward for the players,”

“They played fantastic in the last game here against Arsenal and the performance didn't get the result it deserved,”

“The performance tonight got the result it deserved and that was three points.” Dalglish told Sky Sports HD 1

The skipper opened the scoring in the first half before a brace in the second period saw the Reds record a fifth Premier League double over the Blues.

Match Preview: Liverpool v Everton

Rather than chasing a Champions League place, after three successive Premier League defeats, Liverpool go into the Merseyside Derby looking over their shoulders at neighbour Everton.

A 1-0 defeat to Sunderland at the weekend leaves Liverpool just three points ahead of Everton, while they'll kick off on Tuesday a massive 13 points behind fourth-place Arsenal.

Once again, Liverpool's latest loss showed up their inability to turn their dominance in possession into registering on the score sheet. A paltry 30 goals scored in the league this campaign, far lower than any team above them, speaks volumes about the difficulties the Reds have endured.

Liverpool v Everton Everton’s defence has conceded just 28 goals, only two goals more than Liverpool’s defence, and has been their pillar of strength. Although Jagielka is fit and played a minor part in the match against Tottenham, Moyes will stick to the successful pairing of Heitinga and Distin in the centre.

Moyes will certainly not become over-confident going into the game at Anfield. The Everton boss has yet to taste victory at Liverpool's illustrious home in his long tenure at Everton.

At the very least Dalglish should be able to get his players to display more energy in this local derby. But Everton will go to Anfield on a high, knowing that they have rarely had a better chance to return from across Stanley Park with all three points.

Derby games are often unpredictable, though, and the Merseyside variety is also frequently more edgy than explosive. Couple that with both sides' inability to find the back of the net on a regular basis this season and this contest could well fizzle out into a bore draw.

Don’t be surprised if an Evertonian’s head or Suarez’s brilliance decides the match either way. The Liverpool striker, especially, has been due one piece of magic for a long time.

Liverpool (from): Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Carragher, Enrique, Adam, Spearing, Downing, Gerrard, Bellamy, Suarez, Doni, Kelly, Coates, Shelvey, Henderson, Rodriguez, Kuyt, Carroll.

Everton (from): Howard, Heitinga, Baines, Distin, Hibbert, Neville, Cahill, Drenthe, Osman, Fellaini, Stracqualursi, Jelavic, Coleman, Barkley, Jagielka, Anichebe, Gueye, Mucha, Rodwell, Pienaar, Vellios.

Liverpool striker hinted on Ligue 1 move

Rumours of a switch to Paris Saint Germain for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez are sure to grow after the player told Canal+ he would be open to such a move.

Suarez has endured a stormy 12 months in the Premier League, scoring 10 goals in 32 appearances and being affected by disciplinary problems - the worst of which was an eight-game ban for the use of racially offensive language towards Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

Last week, PSG indicated they would make a move for the Uruguay international in the summer, though Reds boss Kenny Dalglish insisted there was no chance he would be sold. But now the player has suggested he is willing to move to the big spending Ligue 1 leaders the situation could change.

Diego Lugano, captain of Uruguay and a staunch supporter of Suarez during the racism row, is at PSG and Suarez said he would "love" to play alongside him at club level. That said, Lugano is something of an outcast at PSG and has started only nine Ligue 1 games this season.

“Yes, I could come to Paris, like lots of other clubs. There are lots of big clubs with such a reputation who want to build a strong team and Paris are one of these teams who buy to strengthen their side.

“I would love to play at the same club as him (Lugano).” said Suarez on Canal+

PSG confirmed interest on Liverpool’s striker

Liverpool could be offered an easy ‘get out of jail free’ card as regards Luis Suarez as Paris Saint-Germain confirm their interest in the troubled Uruguayan striker.

Suarez, 25, joined Liverpool last January in a £22.8million deal. During his time on Anfield he has shown the brilliance that convinced the Liverpool hierarchy to part with such a hefty price tag, but he has also shown the darker side to his game of which we were already too aware.

PSG owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi has confirmed his interest in signing Liverpool striker Luis Suarez in the summer, according to Sky Sports News.

Al-Khelaifi heads-up a Qatar investors group who now own the French giants and the ambitious owners have already spent heavily in order to try and bring success back to Paris.

With PSG currently topping the Ligue 1 table, it looks like their plan is already paying off and according to quotes on Sky Sports News today the big-spending owners have identified Liverpool striker Luis Suarez as a key signing this summer.

He says the lavish spending at Parc des Princes will continue for 'five or six years' as PSG set about becoming a global powerhouse.

So it looks like Liverpool may be bracing themselves for a summer bid for their star man. But it remains to be seen whether the Uruguayan would be interested in moving to Ligue 1, which is well below the standards of the Premier League.

Liverpool captain insist top four finish still possible

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has admitted they cannot afford to drop any more points if they want to keep alive their slim hopes of finishing in the top four.

Saturday's defeat to Arsenal has left the Reds trailing the Gunners by ten points in the race for fourth spot and a place in next season's UEFA Champions League.

Gerrard, who missed the Arsenal game through injury, has rallied his team-mates not to give up on fourth place and fight until the end of the season.

"A few weeks ago, people were writing off Arsenal's season, but their recent performances show how foolish that is. That's what we need to do now," Gerrard told the Daily Mirror.

"We still have plenty of points to play for in the league, but it means we can't afford to drop too many more points between now and the middle of May if we want to get back into the top four.

"Competition for the [fourth] Champions League spot is very tough, but we still have to play most of the teams around us, and defeating those sides will still play a major part in deciding where we finish."

Video Highlights: Liverpool 1-2 Arsenal

Robin Van Persie's injury-time goal meant Liverpool suffered a harsh 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Dirk Kuyt missed an early penalty for the Reds, but the hosts took the lead on 23 minutes when Laurent Koscielny turned Jordan Henderson's cross into his own net.

The Gunners equalised just after the half-hour mark against the run of play, with Van Persie heading a Bacary Sagna cross beyond Pepe Reina from close range.

Liverpool continued to dominate throughout the second half, but Van Persie netted his second with a clinical volley in the 92nd minute to claim three points for the visitors.

Kenny Dalglish's side went into the lunchtime contest aiming to build upon last Sunday's Carling Cup final success by bolstering their top-four hopes against the current occupants of the position, Arsenal, who began the day seven points ahead having played a game more.

Prior to kick-off, the League Cup was held aloft on the Anfield pitch by Steven Gerrard, who missed the contest due to the injury he sustained while on international duty in midweek.

Also absent were Daniel Agger and Glen Johnson, meaning recalls for Jamie Carragher and Martin Kelly, as well as cup final hero Kuyt.

Carling Cup Final: Liverpool won on penalties

Liverpool ended their six-year wait for silverware with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Cardiff City in the Carling Cup final at Wembley.

After the game had finished 2-2 following extra-time, the Reds prevailed 3-2 on penalties with Anthony Gerrard missing the decisive kick for the Welsh side.

It meant Kenny Dalglish has led Liverpool to a trophy in his first full season back at the helm, and he'll be hoping it proves the catalyst for further success in the remainder of 2011-12.

Joe Mason had given the Bluebirds a 19th minute lead against the run of play when he crept into space inside the box and struck through the legs of Pepe Reina.

Liverpool controlled the contest, but had to wait until the hour mark to equalise when Martin Skrtel pounced on a loose ball in the box to fire home after Luis Suarez's header had hit the post.

With no further goals in the 90 minutes, the teams contested half an hour of extra-time - and Dirk Kuyt fired the Reds into the lead when he found the net at the second attempt from the edge of the box on 108 minutes.

However, Ben Turner netted from a goal-mouth scramble following a Cardiff corner at the death to force penalties.

Liverpool transfer target dismiss move to Anfield

This rumour resurfaced again today from SkySports, which Liverpool were tipped to have move for the FC Groningen striker and Luis Suarez’ countryman, David Texeira.

David Texeira has played down comparisons with Luis Suarez and insists he does not yet have enough experience to join a high-profile club like Liverpool.

The 20-year-old frontman is believed to have caught the eye of the Reds, who were thought to be monitoring him in last month's transfer window.

Texeira has also been compared to Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, with the two players hailing from the same city, Salto, in Uruguay.

But the youngster has shrugged off those comparisons, insisting his style of play is more akin to that of compatriot and Inter Milan ace Diego Forlan.

Texeira is aware of talk linking him with an Anfield move but insists it is too early in his career to join a big club.

He instead wants to emulate Suarez in continuing his development in Holland after the Reds striker spent four years at Ajax before moving to Merseyside.

“I heard the rumours that Liverpool were after me, but people talk a lot,”

“It's way too early to join a club like Liverpool. I need more experience first, and that's why I joined Groningen,”

“I want to develop here, and eventually join a bigger club, just like Luis.” he said.

Video: Kenny Dalglish on Carling Cup Final

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish says victory in Sunday's Carling Cup final against Cardiff would mean a great deal to both himself and supporters after six years without a trophy.

The Reds have not won anything since their FA Cup win at Cardiff in 2006.

“It means a lot to me. More importantly it means a lot to a lot of people who have had to endure a few years when we've not been [to Wembley],”

“It is just reward for the loyalty and support they have shown.”

Championship side Cardiff stand between Dalglish and what would be his first ever League Cup win as a manager.

It is the one domestic honour missing from his managerial career, although he won it four times as a player.

A 3-2 aggregate win over Manchester City in the semi-final ensured Liverpool's first trip to the new Wembley, where they will bid for an eighth League Cup title.

“I think we've treated the competition with respect but the other teams that have are few and far between,”

“We have treated it very seriously. We've used 20-odd players to get there so every member of the squad bar a couple has made a contribution,”

“We are grateful to all of them, to the owners and supporters and everyone who has stood by us.” added the veteran Scot.

The Reds go into the match on the back of a 6-1 win over Brighton in the FA Cup, which has set up a quarter-final clash with Stoke City at Anfield.

“We have moved on from where we were last year, progressing in the FA Cup and the final of this cup and are four points behind fourth in seventh place - this time last year we were nowhere near that,”

“There is progress being made. For the players it is an indication of how well they have done so everyone is looking forward to it,”

“We have a chance so we will do as well as we possibly can and we will try to progress the club and move forward.” added Dalglish.

Luis Suarez on PSG radar

Reports have surfaced that PSG are ready to offer Liverpool striker Luis Suarez an escape route out of England.

L’Equipe reported that the nouveau-riche French league leaders are desperate to sign a world-class forward and have turned their attention to the Uruguay star after failed bids in January for Carlos Tevez and Alexandre Pato.

The French club are keen to add a world class striker to their squad and the recent problems of Suarez at Liverpool have convinced them that the Anfield club would consider selling a prized asset that has turned toxic over recent weeks.

Suarez served an eight-game ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra, then raised tensions again in refusing to shake the Frenchman's hand ahead of Liverpool's defeat to Manchester United last week.

Suarez apologised to his manager, Kenny Dalglish, and the club, but Liverpool's American owners have been embarrassed by the affair and the Uruguayan's future is in doubt.

Signed in January last year from Ajax in a deal worth £22.8million, Suarez has scored 13 times in 36 appearances for Liverpool. Though arguably the club's best player, the controversy surrounding him may convince Liverpool the best thing for all parties would be to recoup their outlay.

Backed by the oil and gas rich Qatari royal family, PSG would have no trouble meeting any asking price and matching or improving Suarez's wages.

Any move could hinge on PSG claiming a place in the Champions League next season.

Liverpool are currently seventh in the Premier League and on current form look set to miss out on a European place next year.

LFC: A Quiet Incredible Man

By guest writer: Jamie McLaughlin

On the 23rd of January 1919 in a little known town called Hetton-le-Hole in County Durham, was born a baby who was to grow up to be the most successful manager in Liverpool Football Club’s history. His name of course was Bob Paisley.

Paisley started his long road to success at non-league Bishop Auckland before signing for Liverpool in May 1939, but due to war breaking out Paisley had to wait until 5th of January 1946 to make his debut in Liverpool’s first post-war competitive match. Paisley became a regular in the Liverpool team at left-half and he helped Liverpool win their first league title in 24 years in his first full season at the club. Paisley had to wait until 1948 to net his first goal at Liverpool on the 1st May at Anfield in a 2-1 win over Wolves.

Paisley scored the opening goal in a 2-0 FA Cup semi-final win over Everton in 1950 only to suffer heartache when he was dropped for the final against Arsenal in the club’s first ever trip to Wembley, which they lost. Paisley stated that this experience helped him deal with players during his time in management when he had to tell a player he was being left out of a big game.

Paisley became the club captain the following year. He retired from playing as a one club man in 1954 and continued to work for Liverpool as a self-taught physiotherapist. He later became coach of the reserves before becoming a member of Bill Shankly’s famous “Boot Room”. In 1971 he became Shankly’s assistant manager until Shankly’s shock resignation in 1974, where Paisley succeeded as manager.

Liverpool had become one of the top clubs in the country under Shankly’s leadership and had won numerous trophies. Paisley’s task seemed a formidable one to continue in Shankly’s footsteps. But the unassuming Geordie took to management like a duck to water, although his first season did end without a trophy.

Bob Paisley went on to manage Liverpool for 9 years winning 6 League Titles, 3 European Cups, 1 UEFA Cup, 3 League Cups, 5 Community Shields and 1 UEFA Super Cup. The only cup that eluded him was the FA Cup which he lost in a final in 1977. It really is a remarkable record for a man that never really wanted to become manager.

Paisley inherited a great team from Shankly but through time he had to shape the team into his. He lost great players like Kevin Keegan but he replaced him with an even better player in Kenny Dalglish. He could change the role of an established player like Ray Kennedy who was a superb striker for Arsenal, but Paisley could see that he would be a better player in midfield.

Paisley retired from management in 1983 after serving Liverpool Football Club in so many different roles in 44 years unbroken service. He did return to help Liverpool in 1985 as a consultant and advisor to new player-manager Kenny Dalglish for two years before being appointed a director of the club until 1992, having to retire due to ill health after being diagnosed with Alzhiemer’s Disease. Bob Paisley died on the 14th of February 1996. But Liverpool Football Club honoured his fantastic service and achievements by erecting the “Paisley Gates”.

For me, Bob Paisley is the most under-rated manager in the history of British football, his record of success is astonishing. He is the only manager in history to win the European Cup 3 times. During his time as manager he always tried to shun the spotlight and maybe because he was so quiet may be the reason why he is not talked about as much as Ferguson or Mourinho.

It’s not just Paisley’s incredible management career that excites me, but his service to one club in so many roles that he played to help Liverpool Football Club achieve what they have. Paisley was the opposite of Shankly in terms of personality but similar in terms of success.

Although Paisley was quiet he did come away with some memorable quotes –

"Kevin was quicker off the mark, but Kenny runs the first five yards in his head."

“Mind you, I’ve been here through the bad times too – one year we came second”

“It’s not about the long ball or the short ball, it’s about the right ball”

“Other people have earned more money than me in football but no-one has enjoyed it as much as me”

Although this great man is overlooked by many people on his achievements in football, he has legendary status in the hearts of Liverpool supporters. Paisley was manager of Liverpool when I started supporting them and I took the winning for granted at the time, but now after nearly 30 years since his departure from management I realise that success does not come easily in football, and I now I can fully appreciate how great a manager Paisley was.

Suarez v Evra: Ferguson loving every bit of it

Sir Alex Ferguson has told Luis Suarez that he isn’t fit to wear the Liverpool shirt.

The Uruguayan striker again controversially clashed with Patrice Evra on Saturday.

Suarez, just back from an eight-game ban for racially abusing the Manchester United captain at Anfield in October, sparked a pre-match row when he refused to shake Evra’s hand.

And despite seeing Wayne Rooney score twice to take United to the top of the Premier League, Ferguson was in no mood to pull his punches when asked about the Uruguayan’s conduct.

“Suarez is a disgrace to Liverpool Football Club,” said Ferguson. “That player should not be allowed to play for Liverpool again. The history that club has got ... and he does that today.

“It could have caused a riot. I was really disappointed in that guy. For a club with their history, I’d get rid of him, I really would.

“Liverpool have a player banned for eight matches and they’ve tried to blame Patrice Evra. It’s him (Suarez) they should be bloody blaming. He could have cost them a European place.

“I had a chat with Patrice this morning and he said, ‘I’m going to shake his hand. I have nothing to be ashamed of. I’m going to keep my dignity.’ I couldn’t believe it when Suarez refused to shake his hand.” Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has been widely criticised for attempting to defend Suarez.

Dalglish decided against attending the usual post-match press conference, but reacted angrily when asked about Suarez’s snub to Evra on television.

Suarez claimed that the racial slurs he aimed at Evra in October were down to cultural differences.

And Dalglish once again seemed to indicate that he felt the 25-year-old had been misunderstood.

He raged: “I didn’t know that Luis refused to shake Evra’s hand. I’ll have to take your word for it. I didn’t see it. I wasn’t out there. But it’s contrary to what I was told.

“I think you are very severe and bang out of order to blame Luis Suarez for anything that happened out there...Listen, we’re not in it for handshakes.”

The FA last night indicated that they would wait for the report of referee Phil Dowd before deciding whether to act.

Evra embarked on an ill-conceived lap of honour at the final whistle that took him perilously close to Suarez.

Before the game, Greater Manchester Police confiscated thousands of copies of the Red Issue fanzine because it carried a mocked-up picture of the Suarez wearing a Ku Klux Klan outfit.

And as the Liverpool squad left Old Trafford, forward Craig Bellamy became embroiled in an ugly row with United’s head of security.

Later, United defender Rio Ferdinand admitted he refused to shake Suarez’s hand because of the snub to Evra, saying: “If he’s not got the respect that you need to have in these situations, and acknowledge that you’ve made a mistake and say sorry and move on, well I lost all respect for the guy after that.”

A human being has every right not to shakes his accuser’s or a liar’s hand, no matter what crime it involved. Wrongfully penalised by a man’s word against another, is that fair? Luis Suarez served his suspension for the accusation by the English FA, so that’s the end of it.

Excuse him for feeling a little aggrieved. The only thing is that if Dalglish and Suarez has had a talk about shaking hands and he said he would, I would have liked him to. Glad he has apologized for that and so has the club. Glad because that at least puts a temporary stop to all the vile written against him although I wouldn’t bet on it. Some rags are already on the ‘Luis to be sold this summer’ bandwagon.

Who the hell is Sir Alex Ferguson? A manager who bred and lead many love-rats, thugs and drug addicts in his Manchester squad, came out all guns blazing over a handshakes incident. If any Mancs reading this, do you remember the Cantona’s kung-fu kick on Crystal Palace’s fan? Or Keano career ending tackle on Alf Inge Haaland? Ferdinand was banned for 9 months for missing a routine drug test? Two love-rats still running on the pitch in disguise as Rooney and Giggs?

As far as I’m concern, the Premier League title still haven’t being won by any team in February. What is Evra celebrating for after the match? Isn’t that a riot act from a Manchester United player?

When football has becomes too political, it not just tarnished the reputation of Liverpool FC in general but the English FA itself in taking matters into their own hands are like taking a gun and shoot itself on the foot. I’d loved to see what are the FA going to do next? If Evra doesn’t get banned for his action, then your thoughts and mine would be most likely be the same – the system has been too corrupted and has political agendas written all over it.

Match Preview: Manchester United v Liverpool

Team news

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Tom Cleverley will be involved in some capacity this weekend.

The midfielder has been sidelined with an ankle injury since October, but he is expected to make the bench on Saturday.

Chris Smalling is also back in contention, but Nani (ankle), Anders Lindegaard (ankle), Nemanja Vidic (knee) and Michael Owen (thigh) miss out.

The game comes too soon for Phil Jones, but Ferguson is hoping to welcome him back into his plans for United's Europa League tie with Ajax.

Liverpool have no fresh injury or suspension concerns to contend with heading into the game.

Suarez was named on the bench for the goalless draw with Tottenham and Dalglish must decide whether to keep him out of the spotlight or return him to his starting XI.

Spanish full-back Jose Enrique is hoping to return to the Reds fold at Old Trafford and he will be given as long as possible to prove his fitness following a hamstring injury.

Lucas Leiva remains the only long-term absentee in the Anfield camp.

Match notes

Of all the barbs and negativity that have passed between Manchester United and Liverpool in recent months, Sir Alex Ferguson's claim that this encounter is a meeting between a team challenging for the title and one challenging for fourth will hurt Liverpudlians more than anything that has gone on since Patrice Evra reported Luis Suárez for racist abuse last October.

Football is the central issue for both clubs, but until Liverpool meet United as title rivals rather than also-rans, the sense of grievance will linger on Merseyside.

Anfield Cat aka @AnfieldCat becomes Twitter sensation

The cat that wandered onto the pitch during Premier League match between Liverpool and Tottenham has already drawn some 36,000 followers on a Twitter account.

Anfield Cat The grey and white tabby ran onto the field 11 minutes into the first half of the match at Anfield football stadium in Liverpool. It scampered toward Tottenham keeper Brad Friedel's goal and past Kop manager Kenny Dalglish before being scooped up by a steward and carried off the pitch.

Shortly after the cat's one-minute appearance on the pitch, though, a Twitter profile, @AnfieldCat, sprang up, and attracted thousands of followers.

The account, which claims to be the "official twitter of me, the Anfield Cat", so far includes tweets such as, “just had villas boas on the phone asking me to teach fernando torres how to get in the box,” “was scratching at the shankly gates all night last night, back inside now and working on my ball control with @Dirk_18_Kuyt,” “fernando torres reportedly jealous I got a bigger cheer than he has all season,” and “milk is so expensive at football stadiums, it’s an epic swindle.”

Match Report: Liverpool 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur

By guest writer: Jamie McLaughlin

A big match for both teams with Spurs still in the hunt for the league title and Liverpool are in the chase for a top four spot. Spurs humbled Liverpool earlier in the season, when they won 4-0, with Liverpool finishing the match with only nine players. But Liverpool has been on a good run of form recently and they would be looking to gain revenge at Anfield. Liverpool supporters were buoyed with anticipation of the return of Luis Suarez after serving his ban.

The Team

The big team news of the night was that Suarez would start the game on the bench as Dalglish started with Carroll, Kuyt and Bellamy as an attacking threat. Dalglish had to make a defensive change with Enrique having a slight injury, so Johnson was deployed at left back and Martin Kelly slotted in at right back. Jay Spearing accompanied Adam and Gerrard in midfield. Spurs had a few players missing but their biggest loss was manager Redknapp who was stranded in London as his plane was grounded due to fog.

The Match

Liverpool started brightly and almost took the lead when Gerrard played in Carroll, but Dawson slid in with a terrific last ditch tackle that left the Kop shouting for a penalty. Minutes later Gerrard blasted a free-kick into a defensive wall after Johnson had been fouled.

The game was briefly interrupted when a stray cat entered the field of play in what was one of the highlights of the first half as chances were few. Liverpool had the majority of the possession as they looked for the opening goal and Spearing came close with a 25 yard rocket which went inches wide. Glen Johnson had a shot saved by the legs of Friedel as he tried his luck.

The second half continued in the same theme as the first with chances few. Bale drilled a low shot early before receiving a booking for shoving Agger in the chest. Spurs looked to frustrate Liverpool as the half ticked on and they began to sit very deep as Liverpool probed for an opening.

Kelly had a shot from the edge of the box well saved before Dalglish sent on Suarez with 30 minutes to go resulting in an ovation from the Kop. Chances remained few as the visitors “parked the bus”. Andy Carroll shot over after getting on the end of a dangerous cross from Kelly.

Spurs almost stole the 3 points when Bale beat the offside trap to go one on one with Reina, but Reina stood firm and blocked Bale’s effort before the Liverpool defence hacked clear. Moments later Gerrard picked out Suarez, but the striker could only head straight at Friedel. The game ended 0-0 and another frustrating draw for Liverpool.

Summary

Dalglish put out a very strong team and I suppose it was to be expected that Suarez would start on the bench. It was a fiercely contested match with both teams cancelling each other out and both working very hard to put their opponents under pressure. Andy Carroll played well once again and caused problems to the Spurs defence. Liverpool had good spells of possession, but the final ball was poor far too often. Liverpool nullified the attacking threat of Spurs and danger man Bale only really had that one chance at the end. Liverpool didn’t create enough chances to win the match and it was disappointing to only draw, but credit to Spurs they defended superbly.

Man Of The Match – Skrtel – another solid performance with some crunching tackles.

Match Preview: Liverpool v Tottenham

Kenny Dalglish has admitted that he still has not forgotten about Liverpool's 4-0 hammering by Tottenham earlier in the season.

The loss at White Hart Lane remains the heaviest the Reds have suffered since the Scot returned for his second spell in charge of the club, just over a year ago.

Liverpool will be looking for revenge when they welcome Tottenham to Anfield on Monday night, and Dalglish says that plenty of lessons were learned by their thrashing in north London in September.

Striker Luis Suárez returns from an eight-match suspension and will go straight back into the squad to face Tottenham at Anfield on Monday.

The Uruguay international has not played since Boxing Day and is likely to be given a place among the substitutes.

Captain Steven Gerrard is also back having been rested for the midweek win at Wolves.

New signing Louis Saha could make his Tottenham debut at Liverpool. Jermain Defoe is unlikely to play, Rafael van der Vaart is struggling with a calf problem and Emmanuel Adebayor hobbled off during Tuesday's win over Wigan with a hamstring complaint.

Aaron Lennon is extremely doubtful, William Gallas and Tom Huddlestone are unavailable, but Kyle Walker (groin) and Ledley King should be fit.

Match Notes

There was once a time Tottenham needn't have bothered to turn up at Anfield. All they ever left with was a match programme. Times have changed. In a battle of two pure footballing teams, Spurs now outpass and outpace the Merseysiders. They've embarrassed Kenny Dalglish twice since he took over, most notably with an emphatic 4-0 at White Hart Lane. The return of Luis Suarez could make this unmissable entertainment.

Red's Fury™ Prediction: Liverpool 2 Tottenham 1

Liverpool go into Monday’s clash in seventh place in the Barclays Premier League, 11 points behind third-place Tottenham.

LFC: A Week Is A Long Time In Football

By guest writer: Jamie McLaughlin

What a week in Liverpool’s season. Liverpool’s season could have been over if results went against them in the last week, but instead the week just past has been a memorable one, with wins in the Carling Cup against Manchester City, followed by knocking out Manchester United in the FA Cup. All this after Liverpool suffering one of their worst performances and results since Kenny Dalglish’s return to Liverpool the previous weekend away to Bolton, where Dalglish came out and made it publicly clear that he was not happy with his team’s performance.

Liverpool supporters must have been fearing the worst going in to two massive cup games against the two Manchester clubs that are flying high above Liverpool in the league right now. But Dalglish was looking for a reaction from his players, and he certainly got that in abundance. The performance against City in the second leg of the Carling Cup semi-final was superb. The hunger that was shown was great to see from the players, especially after suffering two setbacks as City took the lead twice. The excitement at gaining the result needed to take the club back to Wembley was there for all to see. Liverpool has never been to the new Wembley and now they have a cup final to look forward to for the first time since 2007.

Little time to celebrate Liverpool had to prepare for another massive cup tie against bitter rivals Manchester United at Anfield. This match was a totally different match with Liverpool approaching the game more defensively as they allowed United most of the possession and looked to hit their visitors on the break. Kenny got his tactics spot on with Carragher deployed in midfield to protect the defence and Kenny’s tactics limited United to very few chances. But in the second half Dalglish made attacking substitutions with Charlie Adam, Dirk Kuyt and Liverpool’s in form player, Craig Bellamy coming on as Liverpool looked to knick a winner in the closing stages. Scripted perfectly in a Liverpool memoir was United nemesis Dirk Kuyt to score the winner in the last couple of minutes and shatter Fergie’s dream in the FA Cup.

It really was make or break time in Liverpool’s season with two cup ties in a week followed by a league fixture away to Wolves on the Tuesday in their chase for a top four place. It would have been easy for Liverpool to ease into complacency after their success in two cups, but Liverpool kept their momentum going with a convincing win at Molineux, even resting Steven Gerrard in the process as Liverpool’s squad is showing strength in depth, where Dalglish felt he never needed to bring in any new faces in the January transfer window. Liverpool have stuttered a bit in the league this season but their cup form has been an important distraction and has also brought them some confidence with some great wins against tough opposition. Liverpool have managed to progress in the cup competitions and kept up their challenge in the league in the absence of their star striker Luis Suarez. The much maligned Andy Carroll has looked a much improved player in the last couple of games and Liverpool’s defence is looking water tight.

So there is much to look forward to in the remainder of the season, but whatever happens I’m sure it will be a long time before we forget last week with the importance of keeping our season alive and proving how far the team has come in just over a year under Kenny’s management.
