Pre-season: Guangdong Sunray Cave 3-4 Liverpool

Charlie Adam made his bow as a second-half substitute as Liverpool got their pre-season tour of Asia off to a winning start courtesy of a 4-3 success over Guangdong Sunray Cave on Wednesday afternoon.

The former Blackpool midfielder showed some neat touches throughout a promising cameo as goals from Christian Poulsen, David Ngog, debutant Conor Coady and Andy Carroll gave Kenny Dalglish's side victory in front of a passionate crowd in Guangzhou.

The Reds boss was always going to use the occasion to give the majority of his squad their first run-out ahead of the 2011-12 campaign and he will have taken several positives from an encounter that began with a great chance for Danny Wilson.

The former Rangers man met Dani Pacheco's right-wing corner with a firm header from six yards out but could only watch on as it flew inches past the far post.

The hosts responded and Ricardo Steer saw his effort beaten away by Peter Gulacsi before Ngog forced Guangdong stopper Yu Yongzhe into his first save of the contest with a low shot from the left-hand side of the penalty area.

The Frenchman was looking sharp and thought he had opened the scoring with a cool finish on 15 minutes, only to see the strike ruled out for offside.

It was greeted by gasps of frustration from the local support who had packed into the stadium to witness Liverpool's first ever match on Chinese soil.

It was clear every corner of the stadium was baying to see a Reds goal in the flesh and on 19 minutes they got what they had been dreaming of in the shape of an unlikely source.

Liverpool to offload Konchesky to Leicester City

Liverpool hope to start clearing their deadwood this week with Paul Konchesky considering a move to Leicester City. According to Telegraph, Konchesky will fly out to join Eriksson in Sweden tonight for a medical and is set to complete a £1.5 million move, barely 12 months after joining Liverpool.

Paul Konchesky Konchesky followed Roy Hodgson to Anfield from Fulham for £4 million last summer and, like his former manager, has endured a dreadful time on Merseyside. He spent the end of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool FC set to completes third signing of the summer today

Goalkeeper on the verge of completing move to Anfield. Sky Sports sources understand Roma goalkeeper Alexander Doni will undergo a medical at Liverpool on Tuesday.

Alexander Doni The 31-year-old's agent said last week that a deal was imminent following several weeks of negotiations.

An initial move broke down earlier in the summer after Doni failed to agree personal terms with Liverpool.

But the Brazilian could complete his move to Anfield this week after an agreement was reached with Roma.

Doni would only provide back-up to Kenny Dalglish's first choice, Jose Reina, but would offer an experienced deputy.

Liverpool on Sunday departed for a pre-season tour of the Far East, but members of the medical staff will still be available to oversee Doni's medical.

Liverpool midfielder denies Fiorentina link

The agent of Alberto Aquilani has brushed aside speculation linking the player with a move to Fiorentina this summer.

Reports in the Italian media claim the Viola are considering strengthening their squad by signing the Liverpool midfielder.

Alberto-Aquilani-Liverpool-Fiorentina-Transfer-Target However, Aquilani's agent, Franco Zavaglia, told Tuttomercatoweb.it: "His future for the time being is at Liverpool. The player will remain there.

"With Fiorentina there are no negotiations in place, I have not even been approached by them.

"They are just rumours."

Aquilani, who spent last season on loan at Juventus, wanted to remain in Italy but received no suitable offers despite making 33 league appearances for the Turin outfit.

The 26-year-old was a reported target of AC Milan and Napoli this summer but announced earlier this month he will play in Anfield next season.

Liverpool signed Aquilani from Roma in 2009 and he is under contract with the Reds until June 2014.

Liverpool given green light to sign Lyon fullback

All the press and media rumours of Liverpool FC wants a left-back but from my perspectives Emiliano Insua should be given the chance next season.

Aly Cissokho Aly Cissokho could become the answer to Liverpool's left-back problems after Lyon revealed they are willing to listen to offers.

Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is desperate to bring in a new left-sided defender after being forced to play Glen Johnson out of position at times last season.

After seeing his top target Gael Clichy join Manchester City, he is now looking at a number of alternatives.

Reports in France suggest one of them is Lyon's Cissokho and that a bid is imminent.

Lyon coach Remi Garde told L'Equipe that Liverpool have not yet made an offer for the 23-year-old, but he was prepared to consider any approaches.

'Aly is an important player for us, but if an offer matches our expectation, he is likely to go,' said Garde.

The French club are known to be short of cash and it is thought they are prepared to accept a bid of just £8million, despite paying £13million to sign Cissokho from Porto in 2009.

Liverpool are also believed to be interested in Newcastle United left back Jose Enrique, but face competition from Arsenal for the Spaniard's signature.

Gunners to hijack Liverpool transfer target

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is plotting to hijack Liverpool's bid to buy £15million England winger Stewart Downing from Aston Villa.

Wenger will swoop for Downing, 26, as a ready-made replacement for Frenchman Samir Nasri, who will complete a £25million move to Manchester City when he returns from Arsenal's pre-season tour to Asia.

Arsenal's manager has vowed to keep Nasri at the Emirates but the 24-year-old has just a year left on his Arsenal contract and sources close to the deal are convinced a move will be agreed.

While Wenger will have to cope with another high-profile departure when Barcelona make a final and almost certainly decisive £35million bid for club captain Cesc Fabregas, the Arsenal manager has been
authorised by his directors to spend the full £60million Arsenal are expected to raise from selling their two stars.

Alberto Aquilani It's now reported Sunderland are willing to pay £14million to take Aquilani off Liverpool's hands.

The Black Cats are said to be in negotiations with the Anfield side, beating competition from Tottenham.

Liverpool midfielder at risk of summer clearance

Liverpool FC completed the signing of Charlie Adam from Blackpool late Thursday evening. Adam becomes Liverpool’s second signings this summer.

While Liverpool has added two new central midfielders in their roster, clearly someone has to go. Raul Meireles is the midfielder most vulnerable as Liverpool stockpile central midfielders.

Raul Meireles Technically Meireles was excellent. But aggressively he was lacking. Based on last season he won 38 tackles and lost 20. And in the English Premier League that’s not good enough.

Charlie Adam isn’t renowned for his tackling. But Adam still won 162 tackles last term.

Meireles is also 28-years-old – and demanding improved terms on his contract.

Italian giants, Juventus and Inter Milan are reportedly monitoring Meireles’ situation at Anfield closely. Liverpool failure to strike a deal with Juventus for Alberto Aquilani after a season loan has increased the possibility of Meireles’ exit.

Even though, Meireles has a good first season with Liverpool, he looks the most likely to make way in the great Anfield shake up this summer.

Rumour Mill: Liverpool to back in with an improved deal for Downing

Liverpool will follow up the signing of Charlie Adam with an improved offer for Stewart Downing - but they still face a fight to persuade Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish to sell the England winger.

Villa turned down Liverpool's opening £15million bid and BBC Sport understands they are refusing even to consider a price for Downing, despite speculation that they will sell for £20million.

Downing is expected to hold further talks about his future with McLeish on Friday and Liverpool's improved offer, likely to be around £18million, could even have arrived by then.

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is keen to make the 26-year-old his third signing of the summer after concluding a deal for Sunderland's Jordan Henderson and completed the signing for Blackpool's Adam, and the player is eager to make the move to Anfield, particularly since talks on an extended contract at Villa Park stalled.

Adam Signs The former Blackpool man put pen to paper on his new contract on Thursday afternoon after successfully completing a medical.

Glen Johnson The defender committed himself to the Reds by putting pen to paper on the deal at Melwood on Wednesday afternoon - and then explained to us why he had no hesitation in doing so.

"I'm very pleased," Johnson told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I've been here a couple of years and it's great to be staying here for a few years longer now.

"For the club to want me to be here is a great feeling and I did not have to think twice about signing.

"I think I am improving all the time at Liverpool. You're never too good to improve - and my aim is to just keep improving.

"With the squad we've got now, the backroom staff and the way things are going, things are looking positive. The club is looking to bring a few more players in, so the future is looking bright.

"We've made a couple of good signings already and with a few more we will be a right force in the coming season.

"I'm quietly confident (about the new season). If we take it game-by-game I think we'll do well."

Why Liverpool will not be in the market for a new left-back?

Liverpool FC players has resumed training for the pre-season at Melwood this week. Almost a full squad has returned from their summer holidays except new boy Jordan Henderson, given extra days off after the U21 Championship. While, Luis Suarez and Lucas Leiva are both at Argentina for the Copa America and Dirk Kuyt are not seen at the Melwood training ground.

One particular photo has caught my attention is Emiliano Insua, who is back from Galatasaray on a season long loan. Are Liverpool looking to offload the young Argentinean fullback again?

Emiliano Insua All the rumours on Liverpool in the transfer market for a new left-back has left me wondering why? Insua, a prominent figure in Rafael Benitez squad before being shipped out on loan last summer by Roy Hodgson.

At 22-year-old, he fits FSG criteria and to nurture a young squad at Anfield. He may not be a good over-lapping fullback but given that his age and defensive quality at left-back during his 2009/10 Premier League campaign under Benitez. He has made a total of 42 appearances for Liverpool in all competition, scored 1 goal and 5 assists in 2009/10.

Although the 2009/10 season was an ill-fated one for Liverpool FC which the Reds finished at 7th place. The young Argentinean fullback rarely making any rash tackles. He only collected 3 yellow cards in all 42 games that season.

Even though, Dalglish are desperate to cut the dead woods at Anfield. Most noticeably, Paul Konchesky will be on his way out as he is surplus the requirement.

Given that the Reds has Fabio Aurelio who are injury prone and will not be features in every games. While, Jack Robinson has the potential to be a good fullback but it’s asking too much from a 17-year-old, as he still has a lot to learn on his trade.

Unless, Insua has set his sights and thoughts that his future lies away from Anfield. He should be remained at Liverpool and challenge for a place in the first team.

Tell us more on Emiliano Insua and what your thoughts on this young Argentina fullback in the comment box below.

Villa rejected Liverpool £15M bid

According to Skysports.com, the initial bid of £15million for Aston Villa England international player has been rejected yesterday.

The winger has been reported as a target of the Anfield club for several months and fits the young, British profile sought by owners Fenway Sports Group.

Stewart Downing Rumours have suggested that 26-year-old Downing has grown frustrated at Villa Park following last season's disappointing and uncertain campaign.

But new manager Alex McLeish said at the end of June that he hoped he would be able to convince the former Middlesbrough player to stay at Villa.

It is therefore thought that a fee closer to £20million would be required if Villa are to part with another of their key assets in the wake of Ashley Young's transfer to Manchester United.

Time for Liverpool FC to activate their plan B. Juan Mata from Valencia is rumoured to be the next target.

Liverpool in driving seat to sign the Spanish left-back

After losing out on Gael Clichy to Manchester City, with the latter opted for Champions league football. Liverpool FC renewed their interest in Jose Enrique from Newcastle United.

Earlier on, Arsenal are reportedly in the market for Clichy replacement and has targeted the Spaniard. But the latest news from the internet suggested that Arsene Wenger has prefer to sign a French player instead, according to Footybunker.com.

Jose Enrique But when the Magpies slapped a massive £15million price tag on the Spanish defender, even though he has only a year left on his contract, Liverpool switched their sights to Clichy.

Dalglish thought he could get the Arsenal star for less than half the Enrique price, but Manchester City snapping up the Frenchman leaves the Reds still looking for a left-back.

Liverpool will now return to St James’ Park with an improved £8million bid for Enrique, as Dalglish looks to strengthen the left side of his defence.

Liverpool were forced to play England right-back Glen Johnson out of position for much of last season, after new signing Paul Konchesky flopped.

And with Fabio Aurelio again showing his frailty with yet more injuries, left-back is a top priority for the Merseyside club.

His contract situation means Newcastle will surely be forced to sell this summer, rather than risk losing out on a fee.

The Spaniard returned to training yesterday, and has set up talks with manager Alan Pardew for later in the week, but his refusal to sign a new deal that's been on the table for six months would seem to hint at his intentions.

Liverpool to offer £12M player-plus-cash deal for Downing

In an attempt to land the transfer target for Liverpool “trouble” position for the past season. Liverpool boss, Kenny Dalglish will offer Aston Villa £12million cash plus David N’gog, moving in the opposite direction.

It is understood that N’gog transfer to Stadium of Light has been stalled and Dalglish need to react swiftly to offload Liverpool FC fringes as the pre-season is about to kick-off.

Stewart Downing It is believed that new boss Alex McLeish is reluctant to lose the England international, but with recent contract talks at Villa Park stalling, the club may be prepared to take accept a transfer fee and move instead for Charles N'Zogbia from Wigan.

McLeish reign already saw Ashley Young moved to Old Trafford. The Villa manager was still interested in keeping Downing.

In unforeseen circumstances, contract negotiation between N’gog and Sunderland didn’t materialized as planned although Liverpool has agreed on the transfer fee.

Liverpool and Dalglish are reluctant to met Aston Villa demand for £20million on the 26-year-old England international. A player-plus-cash deal is seems to be the best option for the Reds.

Blackpool wants Liverpool central defender in Adam deal

Having missed out on Connor Wickham to Sunderland and Gael Clichy to Manchester City. Liverpool has intensified its chase for more new recruits for the coming season. Charlie Adam has been the prime target since the January transfer window. Blackpool are trying to compensate the loss of Adam by signing more players on loan.

Blackpool captain Adam has told the Seasiders of his desire to leave for Anfield this summer but manager Ian Holloway is hoping to soften the blow by acquiring three players on loan.

Danny Wilson After Stephen Darby and Jonjo Shelvey were proposed as two of the possible makeweights, 19-year-old Wilson is the third young Red to be linked with a move to Bloomfield Road as part of the package for Adam.

Blackpool would still be looking at an £8million fee for Adam's signature but an agreement to release the Liverpool trio on season long loans would speed up the protracted transfer of the Scot to Merseyside.

Blackpool appear to have already found a replacement for Adam with yesterday's signing of attacking midfielder Bojan Djordjic from Hungarian side Videoton on a free transfer.

Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is understood to be willing to loan out Scotland international Wilson - a £5million signing from Rangers last summer - after his former club expressed a desire to have him back at Ibrox for next season.

Liverpool had hoped the signing of Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson earlier this month would have kick-started a rush of transfer activity but reported targets Phil Jones and Connor Wickham have gone elsewhere - the acquisition of Adam has therefore taken on greater urgency.

Ipswich striker Wickham, who emerged as one of the summer's hottest properties and was on the Anfield wish-list, signed for Sunderland yesterday in an £8.1million deal with the fee potentially rising as high as £12million with various add-ons.

Rumour Mill: Liverpool to secure the £8M transfer of Charlie Adam

Liverpool are expecting to clinch a deal for Charlie Adam this weekend, unless Aston Villa delay proceedings by turning negotiations into a bidding war.

Damien Comolli, the Reds' director of football, will press ahead over the next 48 hours in an attempt to add Adam to the recent capture of Jordan Henderson. A meeting with Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston is booked, and Liverpool hope to conclude an £8 million transfer.

Charlie Adam - I'm going to Anfield Oyston revealed 11 days ago that he had held initial talks with the Anfield club, saying in The Gazette: "We've had a few very preliminary discussions and enquiries but nothing of any substance."

Liverpool first lodged an £8 million bid in January, only to find the Tangerines holding out for £12 million. Oyston had hoped Adam would keep his club in the Premier League, but now he is left on weaker ground to barter, with the Scotland international desperate to stay in England's top flight.

The most likely scenario to scupper Liverpool's plans would be a last-ditch hijack attempt from Aston Villa, whose new boss Alex McLeish used to work with Adam at Rangers. Blackpool would hope a rival bid would drive up Liverpool's offer, which is expected to start as low as £6.5 million.

Adam is one of a handful of players wanted by Kenny Dalglish, who also has Comolli negotiating for Ipswich's Connor Wickham, Arsenal's Gael Clichy, and Aston Villa's Stewart Downing. The Reds are already believed to have had offers of £5 million and £12 million rejected for Clichy and Downing respectively.

Adam's arrival would create an overstaffing of midfielders at Anfield, where Alberto Aquilani has returned after Juventus cooled interest in a £14 million deal. Portugal international Raul Meireles has also been linked to the Turin club, but no formal movements have materialised.

Liverpool to swoop for £20M England winger

Aaron Lennon has joined the long list of players Liverpool are hoping to sign, with the Reds rumoured to be planning a £20 million bid for the Spurs winger.

Aaron Lennon Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has already brought in Jordan Henderson from Sunderland this summer, but is looking to add further creative players to his squad.

Negotiations to buy Blackpool's Charlie Adam are ongoing and the Reds are expected to wrap up an £18 million deal for Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing in the near future.

Reports suggest Dalglish will turn his attention to Lennon once the Downing transfer is completed, as he attempts to bring in players who can create chances for £58 million strike duo Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp would be reluctant to sell Lennon, but knows he is likely to need to offload one of his big-name players to fund his own squad rebuilding plans.

Allowing the England wideman to leave would be a more attractive prospect to him than losing either Luka Modric or Gareth Bale.

Liverpool target to remains at Emirates

Arsene Wenger claims Arsenal are doing all they can to keep Gael Clichy at Emirates Stadium.

Gael Clichy The French full-back has been linked with a number of clubs this summer, with it reported that he is keen to take on a new challenge.

Serie A giants Roma are believed to be heading the queue for his signature, with Liverpool also in the hunt.

Wenger has commented on the issue before, making it clear that the Gunners would be reluctant to do business with a Premier League rival.

He has, however, now revealed that Arsenal are in talks with the defender regarding his future.

They hope the 25-year-old can be persuaded to stay on and pen an extension to his current contract, which is due to expire next year.

"We have started talks with Gael and want him to stay," said Wenger.

Liverpool interested in Sochaux midfielder

Liverpool target Ryad Boudebouz confirmed he has been in talks with the Anfield club, but claimed he is no rush to quit Ligue 1 side Sochaux.

Ryad Boudebouz Attacking midfielder Boudebouz, 21, had an outstanding season for the French club, helping them to finish fifth and qualify for the Europa League.

Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is keen to add youth and depth to his squad and Boudebouz is high on his list of targets.

'Liverpool are a big club and there has been contact,' the attacking midfielder told L'Est Républicain. 'But I have to take my time, see the [Sochaux] president, discuss things through.

'I plan on being at pre-season training on Wednesday.  If there's a big money offer, perhaps it will be impossible to say no. I don't want, at all costs, to leave Sochaux, but if there's an offer, I'll think about it.'

Wolves interested in Liverpool left-back

Skysports.com understands Wolves have made an enquiry about Liverpool defender Paul Konchesky.

Paul Konchesky Konchesky is widely expected to leave Liverpool this summer with the player not figuring in Kenny Dalglish's long-term plans.

The full-back joined Liverpool from Fulham last summer, but following Dalglish's appointment as replacement for Roy Hodgson, Konchesky was farmed out on loan to Nottingham Forest.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is a big admirer of Konchesky and saw a move for him on loan during the January transfer window fail to materialise due to regulations which meant the player could only move to another club on an emergency loan having played for Fulham and Liverpool last season.

McCarthy is keen to bolster his defensive options and he has rekindled his interest in Konchesky.

A number of other clubs are thought to be keeping tabs on Konchesky's situation with Liverpool thought to be ready to offload the left-back.

Meanwhile, Liverpool will have announced they will conclude their pre-season preparations with a friendly against Spanish side Valencia at Anfield on 6th August.

Marveaux signs for Magpies

Newcastle United have beaten Liverpool to the signing of French midfielder Sylvain Marveaux.

Sylvain Marveaux Midfielder Sylvain Marveaux, 25, has agreed terms to join Newcastle United on July 1 from Rennes, after agreeing a five-year-deal at St. James' Park.

The former France Under 21 International joined Rennes as a 15-year-old in 2001, making his first team debut in 2006. Since then he has made over 100 appearances for Les Rouges, scoring 16 goals from attacking or left midfield roles.

Manager Alan Pardew said:"It's a great coup to have signed Sylvain, who has received interest from a number of other clubs. He may not be well known to many of our fans but he is a real talent and a player we have been keeping an eye on for some time. It's been a good couple of days for us on the transfer front."

Marveaux is now set to become Newcastle's third signing of the summer, and he is the third French-born player to join following on from Yohan Cabaye and Demba Ba.

Reports had emerged on Friday evening that Marveaux had failed to come through a medical at Liverpool, prompting the move to fall through.

But the left-sided midfielder, who underwent groin surgery in February, is adamant this was not the case, and says he has been fully fit for months.

"Frankly, those rumours aren't anything," he told L'Equipe. "I am perfectly fit, and capable of playing again.

"I resumed individual training sessions at Rennes late last season and I could have played the last match if the club wanted.

"I am a little disgusted to read rumours like that because I know it could affect the rest of my career."

Stoke City to beat Liverpool and Arsenal for Birmingham defender

The Birmingham centre-half is a summer target for a number of Premier League clubs after slipping out of the top flight with the Blues last season.

Scott Dann Stoke are among those leading the chase and hope to steal a march on their rivals by making an early move.

It is understood that a bid has been lodged and talks between the two clubs have begun.

The Potters can, however, expect to face stiff competition for Dann, with the race for his signature set to hot up.

Aston Villa are preparing to make an approach, with new boss Alex McLeish having worked with the highly-rated 24-year-old during his time at St Andrews.

Long-term suitors Arsenal and Liverpool are also believed to be readying moves, with Arsene Wenger and Kenny Dalglish in the market for defensive reinforcements.

Black Cats swoop for Liverpool striker

Sunderland hope to complete the signing of striker David Ngog from Liverpool for around £5million in the next week.

Ngog was offered to the Black Cats as part of the deal that saw Jordan Henderson move to Anfield earlier this month but in the end the Frenchman stayed at Anfield for the time being.

However, Steve Bruce is keen on landing the 22-year-old and hopes to wrap up the deal in the next seven days.

Ngog has been deemed surplus to requirements at Liverpool by boss Kenny Dalglish and will be allowed to move on in a deal that is set to be worth around £5million.

The striker, who has scored nine league goals in three seasons for the Reds, could get an immediate chance to face his old club if the transfer goes through as Sunderland travel to Anfield on the opening day of the new campaign.

Liverpool preparing a move for Colombia international defender

Udinese defender reveals Reds offer.

Cristian Zapata Udinese defender Cristian Zapata has revealed that he is close to agreeing a deal with Liverpool.

The Colombia international is rated as one of the best defenders in Serie A and he played a major role in helping them into the UEFA Champions League next season.

He is currently back in South America preparing for the Copa America, but he has revealed that he is in talks about leaving Italy.

The 24-year-old has stated that Liverpool and Bayern Munich have both made moves for his signature, but he admits that he is close to sealing a switch to Anfield.

Asked about his future by La FM, he said: "I do not know what to say, I can say that I am very close to Liverpool.

"At the end of the Copa America, we will see what happens with my future.

"I have gained experience, but the time has come for me to make the jump to a big team."

Zapata, who has been with Udinese for four years, plays in central defence but is also capable of playing in either full-back position.

A previous target of Arsenal, Zapata currently has two years left on his contract at the Stade Friuli.

Liverpool prepare to extend defender contract

Liverpool FC defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos has earned himself a 12-month contract extension at Anfield.

Sotirios Kyrgiakos The former Greece international, 32 next month, originally joined on a two-year deal from AEK Athens at the start of the 2009-10 season.

However, written into that agreement was an option for a further year and it is understood Kyrgiakos has qualified for that having played the required number of matches last season.

Kyrgiakos was fourth in the pecking order of centre-backs in the previous campaign, behind Jamie Carragher, Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger.

With the club looking to reinforce that area this summer his chances could be even more limited and it is possible he will be sold, with a return to his homeland the most likely.

Liverpool have, however, confirmed the departure of a number of reserves with former captain Steve Irwin, Nikola Saric, Jason Banton, Deale Chamberlain, Alex Cooper and Sean Highdale all leaving.

Liverpool target left-back wants Champions League action

Liverpool has been keeping tab on the contract negotiation of the Spanish left-back at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has confirmed defender Jose Enrique is hoping to join a Champions League side this summer.

Pardew recently admitted that Enrique, who has been a key player for Newcastle in recent times, was stalling over a new contract as he enters the final year of his current deal.

Enrique, 25, has stated that he is happy at St. James' Park but Pardew appears pessimistic about his chances of retaining the player.

"He has Champions League aspirations and he is waiting to see whether anyone who has qualified for that competition is willing to come in for him," Pardew said. "That is his right and there isn't much more we can do about it.

"We have tried as hard as we can, in the financial situation we are in, to keep him. We offered him an excellent deal, but he doesn't seem to be interested in signing it at the moment. It is frustrating - but that is the situation we are in.

"It is up to him, but he wants to see what else there is for him."

Bayern Munich and Liverpool are said to be interested.

Meanwhile, Pardew has moved to assure fans that they can expect more new faces to arrive at the club after the sale of Kevin Nolan to West Ham.

"We are looking to complete on a number of deals over the next month or so, and I am sure with the quality of signings I anticipate coming into the club, we should look forward to exciting times in the upcoming season as we look to establish the club as a genuine force in the top half of the Premier League," he said in a statement released to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

Liverpool edge closer to signing the French winger

Liverpool has been known to have made a pre-contract agreement with the France international midfielder back in January 2011.

Liverpool have moved closer to signing Sylvain Marveaux on a free transfer after the French midfielder underwent a medical on Merseyside.

Sylvain Marveaux The 25-year-old is out of contract following five seasons in the Rennes first team and has been linked with a move to Anfield since January.

Talks took place between Liverpool officials and Marveaux's representatives when Roy Hodgson was manager, although the club's director of football Damien Comolli has overseen the transfer and interest has not waned since Kenny Dalglish took charge.

Marveaux made only 10 appearances for Rennes last season due to a serious groin injury but, providing he passes the medical, the left-sided midfielder is likely to become Liverpool's second capture of the summer following the arrival of Jordan Henderson from Sunderland.

Liverpool go Gago for Madrid star

Liverpool are favourites to land Fernando Gago after Jose Mourinho told the midfielder he is no longer needed at Real Madrid.

The Reds are looking to overhaul their midfield in order to make a challenge on the top four again next season, and have already signed  Jordan Henderson for £16million.

Fernando Gago Argentina international Gago, 25, is rated at around £15million, but Liverpool are weighing up a bid of around £10million.

The defensive midfielder's agent, Marcelo Lombilla, is reported to have begun talks with Anfield director of football Damien Comolli over a move.

Lombilla said: 'Gago needs to play and Liverpool would be a perfect club for him, Fernando wants to get back on the pitch and return to the top level and at the moment that is not possible in Madrid.'

A source at Madrid told the Daily Star that Gago would leave the Spanish giants this summer and that the Reds were leading the chase for his signature, saying: 'Fernando knows that he has no future at the club.

'There has been interest in the past from some Italian clubs and Aston Villa, but Liverpool have shown the most interest.'

Jordan Henderson – A New Breed For Liverpool

As an avid viewer of the English Premier League, I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know a great deal about Jordan Henderson. He didn’t particularly stand out for me over the course of the season, but it does seem that there was a reasonable amount of interest in him from some top clubs. In the end, Liverpool have signed him for a whopping £20 million, which will have taken a large chunk of their summer budget away.
Henderson was born on 17th June 1990 and is a midfielder who was born in Sunderland. He played his youth career at Sunderland between 2006-2008 and made his debut for the senior team in 2008. He went on a loan spell at Coventry City for a season and came back to the Stadium of Light. Before his move to Liverpool, he played 71 games for Sunderland and scored 4 goals and also made his full England international debut last year.
Earlier this year in January, Jordan Henderson was placed on the official FIFA website as one of the top players to watch in 2011 and he was extremely highly rated by Sunderland manager, Steve Bruce. This evidence points to the fact that Henderson might very well have a bright future at Liverpool and it gives further emphasis on the fact that there is a change in philosophy at the club.
Could it be the case that Liverpool are going to build a squad that has mainly home-based players in it? It certainly seems so when you look at the players the club have been linked with this summer. Charlie Adam, Ashley Young, Joey Barton, Lee Cattermole and Stewart Downing have been linked with the club and whether these rumours are true or not, it does suggest that their transfer policy has changed considerably. It might also be the case that fans buying Liverpool shirt printing are mostly wanting home-based players on the back of their jerseys.
If Henderson lives up to potential, he could be a long-term midfielder for the club and might be the one to drive them onto winning trophies again. When you combine this potential with the fact that the club have already signed players like Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll, it could be an exciting time to be a Liverpool fan again. Only time will tell, but you could see a completely different side in a couple of seasons and possibly one that is lifting silverware in the near future.

Inter bid £14M for Liverpool midfielder

Italian giant’s Inter Milan are vying for the services of Liverpool’s Portuguese midfielder Raul Meireles in possible £14million swoop.

Raul Meireles Meireles, 28, eventually enjoyed a successful first season in the premier league after a slow start. Helping Dalglish’s men gain a credible Premiership spot after a troubled spell under Roy Hodgson.

Despite only being at Anfield for a year, Meireles was voted PFA fans player of the year. The creative hub of Liverpool’s midfield play during Gerrard’s considerable lay off now faces stiff competition for his place. With the signing of England prospect Jordan Henderson and the potential transfer of Charlie Adam from Blackpool, the former FC Porto player’s starting place is by no mean assured.

Inter failed to replicate the scintillating form shown under Mourinho during their Treble winning campaign last time out. The faults which have haunted the side throughout the season were on show in the 5-2 capitulation at the hands of Schalke in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final.

Maxi set to leave Liverpool

Liverpool winger Maxi Rodriguez has revealed he would be open to a move back to Argentina with Newell's Old Boys.

Maxi Rodriguez The 30-year-old started his career at Newell's before leaving for Espanyol in 2002.

Maxi is set to ask Kenny Dalglish if he will release him from his contract and let him return to Argentina next season, despite still having two years left on his contract at Anfield.

“When I left here, I knew I was coming back.”

“The president (Lorente) called me and I told him yes.”

“Now it all depends on the contract I have with Liverpool, that maybe can be loosened a little.” Maxi told La Capital on Tuesday afternoon.

Despite a successful end to last season's campaign with Liverpool, when he scored two hat-tricks as he hit seven goals in three matches, Rodriguez is likely to be only a fringe player next season if he stays.

As manager Kenny Dalglish looks to freshen up his squad and bring in younger players, Rodriguez's age could count against him.

Midfielder Charlie Adam, 25, and winger Stewart Downing, 26, are said to be on Dalglish's wish-list.
