Transfer rumours: Reds linked with versatile German international

Liverpool are being linked with versatile German international Marcell Jansen as manager Roy Hodgson continues his search for a new starting left-back.

The 24-year-old has played in several positions during a career that has been solely in the Bundesliga so far, and is employed as a midfielder as much as a defender by current club Hamburg.

Marcell Jansen But Hodgson, who has extensive connections throughout the central European domestic leagues, is thought to have been tipped off that Jansen would welcome a regular role in defence - and is keen on joining Liverpool.

Jansen's capture could also help to allay the lingering fears of some of the Anfield faithful that there is a distinct lack of quality back-up to Inter Milan-bound defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano.

Danny Wilson The 18-year-old arrives from Glasgow Rangers, established himself in the centre of defence at Rangers last season and landed the Scottish Football Association Young Player of the Year trophy after making 24 appearances for the Ibrox side.

“It's a great feeling to sign for Liverpool. Wherever you go everyone knows Liverpool FC and I am just very happy to be here.

"This is a massive challenge for me. This is one of the best leagues in the world and I will be playing for one of the biggest teams in the world.

"Coming here from Scotland, people may say I might not be ready for this, but that is a challenge I want to put on myself and that's the reason I came here.

"Everyone knows about the history of this football club with 18 league titles.

"It wasn't a difficult decision to come here as Liverpool are not a team who come in for you every day, so I can't wait to get started.

"There were other clubs interested in me who are in the Champions League, but once Liverpool came in for me there was only one team I wanted to go to." Wilson told www.liverpoolfc.tv

Degen shown the axe

Roy Hodgson confirmed that full-back Philipp Degen can look for a new club. The Swiss international has struggled to make an impact since arriving at Anfield from Borussia Dortmund in July 2008.

Degen has limited appearances for Liverpool due to his injuries and finding Glen Johnson hard to shackles in the right-back position.

"We have had an amicable conversation with Philipp and he wants to play football."

"We won't stand in his way and he is free to look for another club." Hodgson told www.liverpoolfc.tv

Cole wearing the iconic No.10

There has been some confusion in allocation of Liverpool’s shirt numbers. Earlier signing of Milan Jovanovic has already been assigned with the number 10 shirt.

But due to the popularity of Joe Cole, he has been given the number 10 shirt instead. Jovanovic will be wearing the number 14 shirt, previously worn by Xabi Alonso.

Cole has completed his move to Liverpool FC on Wednesday after the England international has passed his medical.

The deal are reported to be finalised yesterday with Olympiacos agreeing a fee in the region of £4.2million for the Spaniard’s service.

Another Argentine player could be on the way out of Anfield

Javier Mascherano Speculation are mounting on the possibility for Javier Mascherano to follow Emiliano Insua out of Anfield before the new season kick-off. In the latest interview with Reds boss, Roy Hodgson says he is yet to speak to midfielder Javier Mascherano, and has struggled to reach the Argentine.

Mascherano has been heavily linked with a big money summer move to Inter Milan, prompting Hodgson to be keen to talk about his future at Anfield.

“I have tried to contact Javier,”

“I have left him voice messages and sent him texts but had no reply. To be fair to him, that’s not unusual because he’s had a tough World Cup and I believe he’s gone back to Argentina.

“It’s not always easy to get in touch with people. I have tried to reach him to make clear I am happy to talk with him at his convenience.” Roy Hodgson speaking to the press

Inter chief Massimo Moratti says the club definitely have the Argentine international on their wish list.

“Mascherano? I know he has always played well, he has a strong character, is a smart guy,”

“We have so many players in that role good and intelligent. We’ll see if he can help us in terms of technical tactics.” Moratti told Sky Italia.

Earlier in the press, they suggested that Liverpool have reportedly agreed a fee of £5million to sell Argentine left-back Emiliano Insua to Italian side Fiorentina.
