Rumours: Reds in dire straits for a striker

Peter Crouch destined to move south after passing a medical and have agreed terms with Portsmouth. Liverpool desperate to sign a replacement or a new partner for Fernando Torres. Although, many may not agrees with me, as the Reds have Ryan Babel, Dirk Kuyt, Andriy Voronin and Stevie G who can play as a second striker but with Gareth Barry poised to switch allegiance soon, the gaffer may play Gerrard and Barry in a more central role.

We'll missed Babel in the early fixtures to the season as he has been called up for the Olympics, while Voronin doesn't make his mark yet and Kuyt will most likely to start on the right flank. This left us without a good strike partner for El Nino. What about Torres picking up injury in between? We are short of covers up-front.

Reds already loss Mascherano and Lucas who both being called up by their respective country to represent in the Olympics. Signing of another star striker will be crucial for our title push. Alot of names have been linked to Liverpool, but one by one being chop down as Rafa needs to sell first to have the significant fundings.

There are already two targets being eliminated and the chances to sign Villa was way out of the proportion, unless The Yanks are supplying the £30million transfer fee, while Huntelaar a similiar player to Babel will not do us any good. More realistically, Robbie Keane is the suitable candidate, he's in his prime, years of expereince in Premier league, a consistent striker and a Liverpool fan.

Aston Villa wants Finnan in Barry's deal

Martin O'Neill says Aston Villa have written to Liverpool to propose a deal for Gareth Barry.

Liverpool are desperate to sign the Villa captain and last week saw a new bid of £15million rejected.

Villa have already turned down multiple offers from their Premier League rivals, with manager O'Neill valuing his skipper in the £18million bracket.

Reports suggest that O'Neill would be willing to accept £17million, plus Reds full-back Steve Finnan in part exchange.

O'Neill has not confirmed his interest in Finnan, but has revealed that a proposal has been put to his Liverpool counterpart Rafa Benitez.

When will this rubbish will ever ends? Since Liverpool are unwilling to pay £18million for Barry. How on earth that a proposal which stated Steve Finnan plus £17million=£18.5million or £19million will be agreed by Liverpool? The Reds valued Finnan at £2million, unless Villa proposed a deal of £13million plus Finnan, then it's a win-win situation for everyone.

Reds allows Crouch to speak with Pompey

A Liverpool spokesman confirmed: "We have reached a verbal agreement with Portsmouth and have given them permission to speak with Peter."

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez will step up efforts to secure his primary transfer targets after agreeing a fee with Portsmouth for the sale of striker Peter Crouch.

The two clubs had been at odds over the England international's value, with Benitez putting it as high as £15million earlier in the summer and Pompey making an offer of £9million, but a compromise appears to have been reached on the structuring of the deal.

Reports suggest Portsmouth will pay an initial £8million with a further £3million payable in add-ons over the course of Crouch's contract at Fratton Park.

"We have reached a verbal agreement with Portsmouth and have given them permission to speak with Peter," a spokesman told the club's website, Liverpoolfc.tv.

Crouch joined Liverpool for £7million from Southampton in 2005, having previously played for Pompey in 2001-02, but last season found his opportunities in the starting line-up limited as Benitez changed his formation to get the best out of record signing Fernando Torres and inspirational captain Steven Gerrard.

Kewell makes Galatasaray switch

Galatasaray announce deal for ex-Leeds and Liverpool winger.

Turkish champions Galatasaray have announced the signing of former Liverpool attacker Harry Kewell on a three-year contract.

Kewell had been available on a free transfer after not being offered a new deal at Anfield following five injury-plagued seasons with the club.

Portsmouth had been linked with a bid to keep the Australian in the Premier League, while Roma had been tipped to sign the 29-year-old.

Rumour: Brazilian keeper Cavalieri for Liverpool

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Brazilian goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri, currently playing in the Brazilian league with Palmeiras.

26-year-old Cavalieri has been at the Alviverde since 2001, and has made 104 appearances for Palmeiras. It is understood that Cavalieri has been to Europe to secure a work permit, and that Anfield will be the destination of the shot-stopper, according to some reports.

Degen officially a Reds

Swiss defender Philipp Degen has today put pen to paper on a four year Anfield deal.

The 25-year-old - who was an unused substitute during the recent European Championships - has opted for a new career with the Reds after his contact at Borussia Dortmund expired last season.

Degen becomes the first new arrival at Anfield this summer, with left back Andrea Dossena likely to follow in his footsteps over the coming days.

After agreeing to sign Degen last month, manager Rafael Benitez said: "Philipp is still young but has gained great experience from playing in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and on the international stage with Switzerland. He also played in the Champions League during his time with Basel and so is used to top level football.

"He is an offensive player with great energy and a winning mentality. His strength is going forward and I am confident he will be prove to be a quality addition to our squad."

He added: "Sometimes you can find these players on the market. When you find a player like him who costs no money it means you can use money for improving other parts of the squad.

"He is a good signing, a player of potential, who can help us improve in the wide areas." Degen began his career with FC Basel in 1996, making his debut five years later. Four seasons in the first team followed, during which he claimed three league titles and one domestic cup.

His time at St Jakob Park also gave him a taste of Champions League football. In fact, Degen was an unused sub when Basel claimed a 1-1 draw at Anfield in 2002-03.

In 2005 the defender joined the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund.

Degen, who featured four times for his country in the 2006 World Cup, spent three years with the German giants, the last of which was blighted by injury.

The full-back recovered in time for Euro 2008, a tournament co-hosted by Switzerland. Unfortunately he did not feature as the Swiss failed to negotiate the group stages.

Degen, who is fluent in French and German, has a twin, David, who also plays professional football.

Keano want to join Reds

Rafa Benitez has been very busy in this summer transfer market and is looking for a strike partner for El Nino since Peter Crouch was heavily linked with Portsmouth and Tottenham. Harry Redknapp brandished Crouch's £15million price tag was too steep for them has opened up opportunity for Spurs. But Rafa want Robbie Keane in the part of player-plus-cash deal on the Republic of Ireland striker and prepared to part with Peter Crouch and around £5million to make it happen.

Robbie Keane reportedly handed in a transfer request after learning of Liverpool's interest in him. As with his pursuit of Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry, though, Benitez is going to have to dig deeper after Tottenham rejected his initial offer and placed a £20million valuation on Keane.

Tottenham value the 28-year-old at £20million, a figure Liverpool believe they had reached as they have priced Crouch at £15million, despite the highest bid received to date coming from Portsmouth at £9million. Spurs are taking Portsmouth's bid as the market value for Crouch and so Benitez will have to increase the cash element of the deal before they will do business.

This transfer saga will too drag into the uncertainty as Tottenham are desperately holding out to its vice-captain after Dimitar Berbatov and Darren Bent are heading for the exit as the transfer kitty was the main stumbling block once again.

Robbie Keane ain't no superstar player but his desire and his experienced in the Premier League will be a huge boost for Liverpool.
