Javier Mascherano want to leave Anfield

Roy Hodgson has today revealed that Javier Mascherano has expressed a desire to leave Liverpool - but insists the Argentina captain will remain at Anfield until the Reds receive a suitable offer.

Mascherano is believed to have been unsettled at Anfield for some time but on Monday made his position clear to Hodgson when meeting the new manager upon his return to the club.

Javier Mascherano Inter Milan, the European champions, are likely to lodge a £25million offer once the sale of Mario Balotelli to Manchester City is complete. Inter opened discussions with Liverpool about the player last week and Mascherano's decision to tell Hodgson of his intentions is likely to speed a deal through.

Hodgson had failed to hold talks over the phone with the former West Ham player while he was on holiday with his family in Miami, revealing he had left a voicemail message but received no response.

"He wants to leave the club,"

"He's made that perfectly clear. I think he wanted to leave a year ago and he wants to leave now. But he's contracted to Liverpool Football Club, so whether he leaves or not is our decision. At the moment he's a Liverpool player and I will continue to treat him as such until a day arrives when he no longer is.

"The mere fact that the player is a little bit unhappy with his situation and would prefer to leave doesn't necessarily mean he will leave.

"It disappoints me but it's not unusual. In every football club in the Barclays Premier League - and in the world - there will be players that would prefer to leave their team. Some are allowed to, some aren't.

"So that's the situation. Mascherano is a Liverpool player, he has a two year contract and I expect him to honour that until the day comes when the club decides to accept an offer for his services." Hodgson told an Anfield press conference.

Mascherano had wished to leave Liverpool last summer, hoping to be the subject of a bid from Barcelona, but Benitez's refusal to countenance losing both the Argentine and Xabi Alonso in the same summer precluded any deal.

He had seemed set to stay at Anfield earlier this year, opening discussions over a new, £100,000-a-week contract, but talks stalled in May and the departure of Benítez seemed to seal his own exit.

No bid, though, will be formally made until Inter are sure of the funds from the sale of Balotelli, likely to be finalised this week, meaning the saga over the player's future may yet drag on into next month.

Transfer rumours: Hodgson set his sight on two left-backs

Since the departure of Emiliano Insua to Fiorentina and Fabio Aurelio released by Liverpool at the end of last season. Liverpool has been fall short on the fullback department.

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is chasing Wigan Athletic fullback Maynor Figueroa and possibility of luring Wayne Bridge away from Manchester City.

The Telegraph says Hodgson is believed to be closing in on Figueroa, the Wigan and Honduras left-back.

The player will leave this summer and Liverpool remain confident of agreeing a £6 million fee.

But Bridge is supposedly the preferred choice for Hodgson, although Soccernet reports that the former Chelsea defender has been told he is still wanted at Eastlands.

However, this could be subject to change as the Blues managed to clinch a deal for Serbian full-back Aleksandar Kolarov - has penned a five-year deal with the Eastlands club and the reported transfer fee was around £15million.

This prompted the City source to admit that Bridge could join the Reds if they come in with a substantial offer.

Transfer rumours: Poulsen to Liverpool?

The most likely departure for Liverpool will be Javier Mascherano to Inter Milan. Juventus midfielder Christian Poulsen is in the sights of Liverpool.

Despite widespread speculation that Mascherano is ready to rejoin his former manager, Rafael Benitez, at Inter, Liverpool are adamant that there has been no formal contact with the European champions and deny that any talks have taken place over his future.

Liverpool do have a fall-back position if and when Mascherano leaves, with Poulsen the likeliest candidate to replace him as a defensive midfielder. Poulsen has been a long-term target for Liverpool and was linked with a move to Anfield last summer before Benitez opted to sign injury-prone Alberto Aquilani.

Although the Dane's agent, Joern Bonnessen, has said the midfielder wants to stay with Juventus, he is unlikely to feature much this season and Liverpool could secure his services for around £6million – the fee the Turin club agreed with Fenerbahce last June only for Poulsen to reject the deal when he was unable to agree personal terms.

Transfer rumours: Reds linked with versatile German international

Liverpool are being linked with versatile German international Marcell Jansen as manager Roy Hodgson continues his search for a new starting left-back.

The 24-year-old has played in several positions during a career that has been solely in the Bundesliga so far, and is employed as a midfielder as much as a defender by current club Hamburg.

Marcell Jansen But Hodgson, who has extensive connections throughout the central European domestic leagues, is thought to have been tipped off that Jansen would welcome a regular role in defence - and is keen on joining Liverpool.

Jansen's capture could also help to allay the lingering fears of some of the Anfield faithful that there is a distinct lack of quality back-up to Inter Milan-bound defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano.

Reds captures Ibrox’s starlet

On Wednesday news, Liverpool FC confirmed they have agreed a deal in principle for the transfer of Danny Wilson from Glasgow Rangers. Danny Wilson signed a three-year contract at Liverpool after passing a medical.

Danny Wilson The 18-year-old arrives from Glasgow Rangers, established himself in the centre of defence at Rangers last season and landed the Scottish Football Association Young Player of the Year trophy after making 24 appearances for the Ibrox side.

“It's a great feeling to sign for Liverpool. Wherever you go everyone knows Liverpool FC and I am just very happy to be here.

"This is a massive challenge for me. This is one of the best leagues in the world and I will be playing for one of the biggest teams in the world.

"Coming here from Scotland, people may say I might not be ready for this, but that is a challenge I want to put on myself and that's the reason I came here.

"Everyone knows about the history of this football club with 18 league titles.

"It wasn't a difficult decision to come here as Liverpool are not a team who come in for you every day, so I can't wait to get started.

"There were other clubs interested in me who are in the Champions League, but once Liverpool came in for me there was only one team I wanted to go to." Wilson told www.liverpoolfc.tv

Degen shown the axe

Roy Hodgson confirmed that full-back Philipp Degen can look for a new club. The Swiss international has struggled to make an impact since arriving at Anfield from Borussia Dortmund in July 2008.

Degen has limited appearances for Liverpool due to his injuries and finding Glen Johnson hard to shackles in the right-back position.

"We have had an amicable conversation with Philipp and he wants to play football."

"We won't stand in his way and he is free to look for another club." Hodgson told www.liverpoolfc.tv
