Suarez Saga: Hung Drawn and Quartered

At long last the FA made a decision on Suarez and his alleged racist comments towards Evra, it really is so amazing how long it has taken to come to a conclusion. I obviously feared he would be found guilty but the harshness of the punishment is unbelievable, obviously the FA are making a strong statement to UEFA on their stand against racism in this country and they were determined to make an example of someone, and unluckily for Suarez he was the man they were looking for.

Suarez has been treated harshly since his arrival in this country, constantly being brought up is his handball on the line in the World Cup to biting a players’ ear, his remarkable talent and great play being secondary to these incidents. But the incident with Evra seemed lightweight, it was like Evra’s word against Suarez and yet the FA has hammered Suarez with a fine and an eight match ban. There is players that end other players careers with bad challenges and don’t receive as harsh a ban.

Liverpool have backed Suarez throughout the whole affair and I suppose you would expect that but with such a case as this the clubs’ integrity is at stake here and yet even after the recent verdict they are still supporting their man. The club seem outraged by the decision with the statement they have produced regarding the decision and it will be interesting to see their next move as they look set to retaliate.

Evra is no angel with a history of controversy and this makes this all the more strange how the FA believe his word against Suarez. If he was angry with what Suarez said during the game, then why did he not tell the referee during the match instead of complaining after the game, most “men” would deal with the matter on the park not go crying to officials after the match, can you imagine Souness acting in this way, me neither.

This ban could have a massive effect on the rest of Liverpool’s season as they will not want to lose their star striker for such a long spell. With Liverpool chasing a top four spot, they will need all of their star players available. But more worrying is Suarez being labelled a racist, mud sticks and even if he appeals and gets off with it, the footballing public won’t forget and this stigma will be attached to a wonderful player because one man decided to get him into trouble.

Suarez has been hung out to dry by the FA as they have drawn the whole episode out far too long and they are now going to ban him for about a quarter of the remainder of the season. I just hope Liverpool stick by Suarez and make a stand against the FA because this has not been handled in the right manner, it seemed the FA had made up their mind a long time ago and Liverpool need to do what is right and not be bullied by them. Watch this space, but whatever happens Luis Suarez will never walk alone.

Video Interviews: Show Luis Suarez Racism Appeal In Public

Former Football Association chief executive David Davies tells BBC Breakfast that the FA's charge of racism against Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is "perhaps the most difficult disciplinary case the FA has had to deal with in modern times" due to "the language and cultural issues" surrounding it.

Davies describes the Uruguayan's eight-game ban as a "tough verdict" and believes "the message will go around the world that the FA are serious against" the issue of racism.

Wigan 0-0 Liverpool: Reds rue missed chances

Liverpool had to settle for a point after being held to a goalless draw by Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium on Wednesday night.

After an open first half, in which both sides had their goalkeepers to thank for keeping the score level, the Reds were awarded a penalty five minutes into the second period after Gary Caldwell handled an effort from Luis Suarez.

However, Charlie Adam's low effort from 12 yards was saved by Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi.

Liverpool continued to press in search of a winner, but they were ultimately to be left frustrated by an inspired display from Wigan's custodian.

Having watched his side win so comfortably at Aston Villa on Sunday, Kenny Dalglish opted to make just two changes to his starting line up for the short journey to Wigan - Maxi Rodriguez and Dirk Kuyt replacing Craig Bellamy and Jonjo Shelvey.

Liverpool have been highly impressive on the road so far this term, and that victory at Villa Park was their fifth in eight contests away from Anfield in the Barclays Premier League. With that in mind, Dalglish would have no doubt have called on his players to pick up where they left off.

A spirited display helped Wigan hold Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at the DW Stadium last time out , but the Reds quickly set about taking the game to their hosts.

Adam smashed an early free-kick into a Wigan wall before good build-up play presented Jordan Henderson with the chance to test Al Habsi from just inside the area.

Video Preview: Wigan v Liverpool

Roberto Martinez will give striker Hugo Rodallega as much time as possible before naming his side to face Liverpool on Wednesday.

Rodallega is Wigan's only injury concern ahead of the visit of the Reds after he suffered a knock during the 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Saturday.

Martinez will assess the Colombian's fitness over the next 24 hours before making a decision on whether or not to risk him in the tie.

Emmerson Boyce, meanwhile, has recovered from a hamstring injury but the game has come too soon for him and he will have to wait until after Christmas before making his return.

Liverpool have no new injury concerns ahead of the trip to the DW Stadium, although Kenny Dalglish must do without Jay Spearing, who is serving his three-match suspension. Other absentees are full-backs Fabio Aurelio and Jack Robinson, although neither would have expected to be in the starting line-up if fit. Dalglish will have a similar match day squad as Sunday at his disposal but may rotate a few personnel to freshen things up during the busy festive period.

Skipper Steven Gerrard is nearing a return to fitness but he is still not ready to take his place following the ankle infection that has kept him on the sidelines for two months.

Referee watch:

Northumberland official Michael Oliver will take charge of his 14th game of the season when the two sides meet. So far Oliver has shown 36 yellow and 2 red cards during games under his control. The 26-year-old has refereed both sides on one previous occasion this season with Wigan enjoying a 2-0 win over QPR in August and Liverpool knocking Brighton out of the Carling Cup 2-1 in September. Oliver was the youngest-ever referee to take charge of a Premier League game, aged just 25 years and 182 days when officiating Birmingham City v Blackburn Rovers on 21st August 2010.

Match Prediction:

Liverpool played really well against Villa on Sunday and earned a well-deserved 2-0 victory, and against an inferior Wigan side there is no excuse for them to lose.

Wigan has allowed 30 goals this season, tied for third worst in the Premier League and have had difficulty keeping opponents from piling up the goals.

Dalglish's Liverpool team have a lot of quality, especially in the midfield, and will cruise to a comfortable win over Wigan in midweek.

Liverpool striker handed an eight-match ban and fine by the FA

Liverpool Football Club is very surprised and disappointed with the decision of the Football Association Commission to find Luis Suarez guilty of the charges against him.

The Football Association imposed the punishment, suspended for 14 days pending any appeal from the club, and a £40,000 fine after a ruling by an independent regulatory commission.

   “It is key to note that Patrice Evra himself in his written statement in this case said ‘I don’t think that Luis Suarez is racist’.

“The FA in their opening remarks accepted that Luis Suarez was not racist.”

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish was fuming at the decision by an independent regulatory commission following a three-day hearing last week.

Club officials will now study the written findings before formally deciding whether to appeal or not. But if he appeals and loses he risks being handed an even longer ban of up to 10 games. Read Liverpool FC Official statement on Luis Suarez here.

An FA statement said:

   “Mr Suarez used insulting words towards Mr Evra during the match contrary to FA Rule E3 (1).

“The insulting words used by Mr Suarez included a reference to Mr Evra’s colour within the meaning of Rule E3 (2).

“Mr Suarez shall be warned as to his future conduct, be suspended for eight matches covering all first-team competitive matches and fined the sum of £40,000.

“The penalty is suspended until after the outcome of any appeal, or the time for appealing expires, or should Mr Suarez decide not to appeal.”

   “Suarez didn’t have to be proven guilty “beyond the benefit of doubt”. This was not English justice, but a sports tribunal. He did not get given the chance to defend himself to a jury of his peers. He faced a small panel, that was not fully independent or without its agendas (such as taking on Sepp Blatter on the issue of racism, and perhaps using this to prove a point). The fact that this was such a tricky issue perhaps made the procedure insufficient; at least John Terry gets to go through a more established process.

“People are wrongly convicted of things all the time, especially with only verbal accusations. Cases are frequently overturned; initial guilty verdicts can be appealed, and are often successful.

However, Suarez is available for tonight’s Premier League clash at Wigan but whether he is in the right frame of mind to play remains to be seen.

From an outside point of view looking into this verdicts on Suarez’s charges, it’s only one man’s words against another man. The committee setup by the FA has failed to provide a concrete evidences on the allegation. Luis Suarez will remained “innocent” until be proven guilty of serious offences beyond a reasonable doubt.

D-day for Liverpool striker on racism row

Liverpool FC striker Luis Suarez's FA disciplinary hearing could be decided today.

The striker is anxiously awaiting the verdict of the independent three-man panel into allegations of racist abuse made by Patrice Evra.

A decision on the charge was initially expected on Friday but the FA released a statement saying it would be ‘Tuesday at the earliest’ as deliberations continued over the weekend.

Aston Villa 0-2 Liverpool Match Report

After getting back to winning ways last weekend in a 1-0 win over QPR, Liverpool were hoping to build on the win away to Aston Villa. Aston Villa had been struggling recently but they earned a good away win at Bolton last week and would go into the match with confidence. Adding spice to the fixture would be the return of former Villa favourite Downing to his old stomping ground.

THE TEAM

Kenny made a couple of changes to his side with Craig Bellamy coming back into the side and a big surprise with the selection of newly returned Shelvey to the team. The rest of the team had played against QPR the previous week. But Dalglish had a very strong bench to call upon if he needed to make changes with Carragher, Coates, Kuyt, Maxi, Carroll, Doni and Kelly in reserve.

THE MATCH

The home side were the first to threaten when Petrov’s free-kick had Reina scrambling. But Liverpool responded with Downing cutting in from the right before firing a shot which was saved by Guzan.

But then in the 11^th minute Liverpool took the lead when Downing’s corner kick was flicked on by Shelvey and then by Suarez before being blocked by Guzan but the rebound fell kindly to Bellamy who made no mistake from inside the 6 yard box.

With Liverpool’s great start to the match it got better 4 minutes later when Bellamy’s corner from the right was brilliantly headed past Guzan by Skrtel for number two and left Villa with an uphill task.

Villa responded with a couple of long range efforts and a good effort from N’Zogbia who hit Reina’s side netting. But Liverpool were always threatening on the break and almost scored a third after Shelvey saw a stabbed effort saved after a sublime nutmeg by Suarez.

With the score 2-0 to the visitors at the half it was Liverpool who created the first chance of the second half when Agger headed a Bellamy cross off target. Liverpool was going for the jugular now and next it was Bellamy the creator for Suarez who smashed a shot off the Villa crossbar.

Liverpool were in full flow now and Villa were hanging on as the chances kept coming for the visitors. Next Johnson saw a 25 yard effort saved by Guzan. Then Suarez produced a piece of magic only to see his chipped effort hit the inside of Guzan’s post with the stopper stranded.

Villa never looked like getting back into the match as they rarely threatened in the second half with Reina left mostly as a spectator and Liverpool looking the more likely to add to their tally. Liverpool ended up having to settle for two goals in another superb away performance setting them up nicely for the festive fixtures.

SUMMARY

A big surprise with the inclusion of Shelvey to the side, but what a game he had, with confidence flowing through his veins. Liverpool got off to a great start with the two early goals setting them up to play on the counter attack, and how well they attacked with the amount of chances created. Villa did have a few efforts in the first half but in the second half it was one way traffic as Liverpool dominated. It was a great team effort away from home and the win should have been more convincing with Suarez hitting the woodwork twice.

Man Of The Match – Bellamy – his movement and work rate was superb and deserved a goal. He created so many chances with his clever play and he has proved to be a shrewd buy by Kenny.

Liverpool edge closer to Champions League spot

Craig Bellamy and Martin Skrtel were both on target as Liverpool marked Kenny Dalglish's 350th match in charge with a superb 2-0 victory at Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

The Wales international got the Reds off to a flyer with a close range finish on 11 minutes before Skrtel doubled the advantage with a thumping header on the quarter of an hour mark.

It set the tone for a one-sided encounter in the Midlands and, although the away team could and should have secured a bigger margin of victory, the result moves them to within three points of third-placed Chelsea ahead of what promises to be a busy festive period.

Going into the Sunday afternoon showdown, Dalglish made two changes to the side that had edged past Queens Park Rangers last time out. Jonjo Shelvey came in for his first start of the season following an impressive loan spell at Blackpool, while Bellamy also returned to the line-up.

The Villans had been struck by a whole host of selection problems in the lead up to the contest - including the loss of joint-top scorers Darren Bent and Gabriel Agbonlahor - and hopes were high that the travelling Kop would return back up the M6 having seen the Reds claim victory on what was a landmark occasion for the King.

However, it was the home team that had the first sight of goal as Stiliyan Petrov teased a free-kick over the wall that had Pepe Reina scrambling down to his right-hand post inside 60 seconds.

Rumour Mill: Liverpool heighten up the chase for Lucas’ cover

Just two weeks away for the January transfer window to re-opens.

It has been revealed that Premier League giant Liverpool are eyeing Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra.

The 26-year-old is one of a handful of players in the position to be linked with the Reds, as Kenny Dalglish considers his options following a season-ending injury picked up by Brazilian Lucas Leiva.

Seydou Keita, Cheick Tiote and Sandro have also been placed on the radar, but reports in The Independent claim Liverpool are plotting a loan move on the French international.

Diarra has Barclays Premier League experience from his time at Arsenal, Chelsea and Portsmouth, whilst Tottenham Hotspur were also linked with a move for the player in the summer.

Liverpool also reportedly joining the chase for Newcastle’s £25million-rated ­midfielder Cheick Tiote.

Kenny Dalglish sent a scouting mission to St James’ Park yesterday as the Ivorian, 25, played his first game since October 22, against ­Swansea.

Rumour Mill: Liverpool to raid Tottenham for Samba midfield star

Reports are suggesting that Liverpool may look to Tottenham this January as they strive to fill a gap in the midfield left vacant by the long-term injury of Lucas Leiva.

It was uncovered last week that the Brazilian anchorman would miss the rest of the season after suffering an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament in the Carling Cup clash against Chelsea.

Sandro is frustrated at a lack of playing time at Spurs but they want him to stay as cover for Scott Parker.

The 22-year-old signed for Tottenham in 2010 for £8million, but despite brief glimpses of quality, has never nailed down a regular role in Harry Redknapp's side.

Now Dalglish is believed to be pondering a move for the former Internacional  starlet, although Italy has been mooted as the midfielder's most likely destination should he leave White Hart Lane.

His agent Luiz Paulo Chignall admits nothing can be ruled out at the present time.

   “In football you can never rule anything out, though, with it possible that negotiations will see all parties reach an agreement. Many clubs have contacted me for information on his situation, but there has been no official proposal," he's reported as saying in the paper.”

Jay Spearing is currently being tipped to fill the void at Anfield after Lucas joined skipper Steven Gerrard on the treatment table, with the Liverpool boss being coy over any possible activity during the transfer window.

Seydou Keita, Lassana Diarra and Yann M'Vila have also been linked with Liverpool moves, and Sandro is the latest name to be added on a speculative hitlist.

Chelsea to auctioned off ex-Liverpool striker for £20M

Andre Villas-Boas was reportedly thinking about sending the Spaniard out on loan to try and rebuild his confidence but has now decided the club should cut their losses on Torres and remove his £150,000 per week wages from their books.

Torres has struggled since moving to Stamford Bridge for £50million from Liverpool at the end of January and has scored just three league goals in total.

The arrival of Juan Mata from Valencia looked like it would help as he scored against Manchester United and Swansea, although both games ended badly with an incredible open goal miss at Old Trafford followed by a red card against the Swans.

Two more goals followed in the Champions League tie against Genk but since then the most expensive signing in British history has found himself behind Didier Drogba and now Daniel Sturridge in the pecking order and he failed to make an appearance against Manchester City on Monday.

Despite Nicolas Anelka being set to leave for China and rumours that Drogba might not sign an extension to his contract which runs out at the end of this season, it appears that Torres’ unhappy spell in west London could soon be at an end.

Liverpool to sign a new striker next month

It’s hardly a conspiracy theory or wild rumours that Liverpool FC and Kenny Dalglish longing for a new striker next month when the January transfer window re-opens.

We all know that Luis Suarez will be indefinitely be suspended at some point by the FA on the racism allegation and the finger gesture during the Fulham match. Unless, Andy Carroll can step up to the plate and proved his critics wrong in the next few games, which I’m highly doubt he can. While, Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy can’t run the show for the full 90-minutes week in, week out as both players are in their twilight years of their career. Who else can we call upon to lead the front-line?

A Scottish international has been named as a target, along with Rangers’ Nikica Jelavic and Polish striker Robert Lewandowski name resurfaced yet again.

Liverpool are pondering a January move for Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Steven Fletcher. Dalglish is desperate to sort out the Reds’ profligacy in front of goal and has identified the 24-year-old as a possible solution.

Liverpool are also preparing an £8million bid for Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic. The 26-year-old has scored 12 times in 17 appearances this season and is believed to be attracting interest from a number of clubs. Newcastle United have also been linked to Jelavic’s signature this January.

Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski is back in the frame again with Liverpool his most likely destination. Lewandowski is not your typical out and out scorer but has still managed to notch up 10 league goals in 16 matches this season. He was instrumental in helping Dortmund lift the Bundesliga title last season and could see a move to Merseyside as a fresh challenge. The 6ft Polish striker would be the perfect player to complement Luis Suarez as he holds the ball well and likes to feed people through.

The Polish youngster moved to Dortmund on a four year contract in 2010 for a fee of around €4.9 million and will take some doing to lure the youngster to leave Dortmund having just signed with the club a year ago. However Liverpool’s new owners have shown enough steel that they are willing to spend big in a bid to put Liverpool back on the map, having already spent over £100 million since their takeover.

Liverpool and Suarez given new extension date on FA charges

Liverpool have been given more time by the Football Association to respond to the two charges that followed last week's defeat at Fulham.

Reds striker Luis Suarez was charged with improper conduct over an allegedly abusive hand gesture, while the clubs were charged with failing to control their players following the sending off of Jay Spearing.

Liverpool were originally given until 4pm on Monday to respond to the charges but have now been given an extension.

Suarez is also the subject of another FA disciplinary case after he was charged last month of racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra in October.

Spearing has already served one game of his three-match suspension after missing the weekend win over Queens Park Rangers, and the midfielder will serve the final two games of his suspension against Aston Villa and Wigan.

Liverpool's next game comes away to Aston Villa on Sunday. The Reds are currently three points outside the top four heading into the busy Christmas period.

Liverpool 1-0 QPR Match Report

With Liverpool’s unbeaten run ending last Monday at Fulham they were hoping to bounce back quickly in their return to Anfield. But Liverpool have not found it easy at Anfield this season, having drawn five matches and especially struggling to beat newly promoted teams, with draws against Norwich and Swansea already this season. QPR have started pretty well this season and Liverpool would have to be at their best to overcome Neil Warnock’s side.

THE TEAM

Dalglish brought Maxi and Kuyt back into the team for this match. With Jay Spearing suspended and Lucas out for the season, Jordan Henderson was drafted into the middle of midfield. Andy Carroll was once again relegated to the bench alongside Jamie Carragher who is struggling to win his place back because of the outstanding Skrtel and Agger.

THE MATCH

Liverpool started the match brightly with 3 corners inside the first 3 minutes but the first real chance came when Downing crossed to Suarez but his header was tame.

Then Kuyt and Suarez combined before Suarez shot inches wide. Liverpool were dominating and QPR were struggling to cope. Maxi then set up Suarez but he shot against the hoardings. Suarez was causing all sorts of bother in the QPR defence and he almost turned provider with a dangerous cross after wriggling free of his marker.

Then Kuyt sent Maxi clear but he was thwarted by a great save from Cerny. QPR had to wait until the 41^st minute for their first attempt on goal from Wright-Phillips but it ballooned into the Kop.

Liverpool responded with Downing sending Suarez clear but his dinked effort was saved by Cerny who was proving hard to beat. Liverpool went in at the half wondering how they had not scored with all their dominance of the first half.

But Liverpool finally broke the deadlock in the 47^th minute when Adam crossed from the left to find the unmarked Suarez who headed past Cerny to the delight of the Kop. Liverpool went in search of the killer second goal with Kuyt going close with a couple of efforts and Maxi once again being denied by another brilliant Cerny save.

Liverpool continued to create chances but between bad finishing and great goalkeeping they could not find the second goal and as the game entered the latter stages QPR started to believe they had a chance of scraping something from a match that they had been outplayed in. The visitors started to make Liverpool defend for the first time and had a penalty appeal waved away when Skrtel made a challenge in the box.

Liverpool had to defend a few corners in the latter stages but they almost doubled their lead in the final seconds when Bellamy’s cross was diverted of the bar by Wright-Phillips. There was great relief around Anfield at the final whistle.

SUMMARY

Great to see Maxi and Kuyt start and Henderson play in his favoured position. Liverpool totally dominate the match, but once again not converting the chances created into goals, which is becoming a common theme. Thankfully we got the goal that was enough to win the match, where in previous games at home we have too often failed to net a winner. Hopefully this win will get another run going. We are playing some tremendous stuff right now and it is far more enjoyable to watch than in previous years.

Man Of The Match – Suarez- unplayable at times, a constant threat, terrorised the QPR defence and thoroughly deserved his goal.

Liverpool transfer target signs for Shanghai Shenhua

When the rumour mills reporting that Liverpool FC are to enquired about the possibility of signing Nicolas Anelka on the cheap this January from Chelsea. The Chelsea forward has agreed to join China's Shanghai Shenhua on a weekly salary of around $300,000.

If the deal goes through, the former Arsenal and Real Madrid star will be the biggest name to appear in China's Super League, which is growing in stature despite significant corruption problems that have left several officials facing jail.

Chinese media quoted a report by sports network ESPN saying Anelka had agreed a two-year deal with Shenhua for a weekly salary of just over $300,000, reportedly a marked rise from his $160,000 a week at Chelsea.

Chinese soccer teams are increasingly resorting to buying foreign players in a bid to boost the sport, which people in the Asian nation adore.

In July, Argentine midfielder Dario Conca became China's most expensive signing - and reportedly, one of the world's best paid players - when he inked a $.8 million deal with Guangzhou Evergrande.

When the Super League kicked off in July, there was no title sponsor and state broadcaster CCTV refused to show games on national television.

Shanghai Shenua, 11th in the Chinese league last season, is the latest stop on Anelka's nomadic career, with spells also at Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Manchester City, Bolton Wanderers and Turkey's Fenerbahce.

Liverpool 1-0 QPR: Suarez on the mark

Luis Suarez clinched the points as Liverpool returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over QPR.

The striker headed his eighth goal of the campaign during a game which the home side dominated.

The A-team theme blared before kick-off and the plan eventually came together for Kenny Dalglish and co despite a wasteful first half.

For his part, skipper Pepe Reina was a virtual spectator.

Dalglish switched Jordan Henderson to a central position in the absence of the suspended Jay Spearing and injured Lucas Leiva.

The Reds applied the early pressure, winning three corners inside the first three minutes.

The first opening arrived on 10 minutes, Stewart Downing crossing from the right towards an unmarked Suarez. The Uruguayan's limp header did not trouble the goalkeeper.

Shortly after that Suarez and Dirk Kuyt exchanged possession in the box before the former daggered a shot within inches from a ludicrous angle.

Soon it would be a hat-trick of chances gone when Maxi rolled the ball into Suarez's path and watched his fellow South American skew against the Anfield Road hoardings.

Some of Liverpool's football was scrumptious, but the scoreline remained blank.

Liverpool considering Chelsea wantaway striker

Liverpool are reportedly considering making a move to sign Chelsea attacker and France international striker, Nicolas Anelka in January. The Frenchman has slapped in a transfer request that boss Andre Villas-Boas has accepted and Anfield director of football Damien Comolli is keen to persuade the 32-year-old to make the move to Merseyside as he could be available for as little as £4million.

Anelka has previously had a successful loan stint at Liverpool back in 2002 after which boss Gerard Houllier opted to make a move to sign El Hadji Diouf instead of the Versailles born adaptable forward.

Dalglish is keen to beef up his attacking options as he looks to secure a place back in the top four and may well feel that a deal to bring Nicolas Anelka to Liverpool could help in that goal. The hugely experienced Chelsea man can play either out wide or as an orthodox striker and may well consider such an offer to return to the side he helped secure a runners-up finish in 2001/02.

Liverpool have had to rely heavily on Luis Suarez for goals and the Uruguayan could do with some effective support after pairings alongside Andy Carroll and Dirk Kuyt fail to bear fruit. Though Dalglish also has Craig Bellamy as a back up option he doesn’t have a great many players to call upon and as a result the club have managed just 17 goals in 13 Premier League matches thus far this season.

Anelka has chosen to put in a transfer request after falling far down the Chelsea pecking order behind the likes of Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres, Juan Mata and Daniel Sturridge. This is despite the fact that he finished last season as the top scorer in all competitions with 16 goals in total.

Though Liverpool have a policy of planning for the future there is also a strong desire to clinch Champions League qualification for next season and a move to bring in such another top notch striker, despite his advancing years, would certainly help in this regard.

The biggest obstacle to such a deal may lie in the fact that Chelsea may not be keen on offering one of their players to a team challenging them for a top four spot, which may lead Liverpool to make a nominal offer of around £4million for a player who will be out of contract in the summer.

Rumour Mill: Liverpool wants £15M Swiss superstar

Liverpool are ready to make an offer for FC Basel star Xherdan Shaqiri after watching the winger put in a man of the match display against Manchester United.

The Reds have been linked with the midfielder for some time after first becoming aware of the players talent when he scored a blistering goal against England in a qualifier earlier this year.

The 20-year-old has continued to impress in the Champions League for Basel this term and on Wednesday night provided both assists as the Swiss side knocked United out of the Europe's premier competition.

Basel realise that they will struggle to keep hold of the winger and are prepared for a number of bids when the January transfer window opens.

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is keen to strengthen his attacking options after watching his side waste a number of opportunities this season.

Shaqiri also fits in with the clubs transfer policy of signing the best young players available who have the ability to stay at Anfield for a number of years.

It is thought that Liverpool are ready to make a £15million bid for the Switzerland international, however, that figure could soon rise as there will be plenty of competition for the players signature.

Chelsea, Manchester City and Barcelona have also been linked with the promising young winger but Liverpool hope to convince him to choose Merseyside by offering regular first team football.

Liverpool are short of options for players in wide areas with Dirk Kuyt and Jordan Henderson often being asked to play on the wing, while Stewart Downing is the only natural left-footed winger.

Liverpool confirmed midfielder Lucas has successful operation on knee injury

Liverpool have confirmed midfielder Lucas Leiva has successfully undergone surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee which he injured last week at Chelsea.

The operation took place in Sao Paulo and the Brazil midfielder, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season, hopes to leave hospital on Friday.

   “'LFC medical staff were present during the procedure,” said a club statement.

“Lucas will now begin an agreed rehabilitation programme which will be overseen by the club's medical team.”

Late last night the 24-year-old wrote on Twitter: 'Busy day doing treatment, hopefully tomorrow I leave the hospital.”

Anfield News: Views for Today

Starting to get over the frustration of the Fulham match. Still simmering over that referee who gave us nothing all night, and it is not the first time this season that I have felt that a referee has not acted impartially. It is not just sour grapes about us losing another match against a team we should be beating. The amount of big decisions that could have gone either way, all went against us on Monday night.

But regardless of the referee he did not put the ball in the net against us to defeat us, an unusual mistake from our reliable Pepe Reina cost us the goal that eventually lost us the game, but if we don’t score then we are not going to win, so we have to be more clinical in front of goal because once again we created plenty of chances, especially away from home. This is happening too often, we seem to bemoan our missed chances every other game and it is costing us valuable points. We look as if we need a predatory striker really badly. Maybe Anelka could do a job as rumours of him returning are circulating.

Felt sorry for Jay Spearing the other night, I thought he was having a tremendous match stepping into the boots of Lucas, and like most people I was amazed at his dismissal. For me Lucas wasn’t missed against Fulham and that is down to the performance of Spearing. Jay will now miss the next 3 matches after his sending off and somebody else will need to fill this void, probably Henderson who might excel in this role. But we have to be appealing against decisions like that sending off instead of accepting them. What would Sir Alex do, would he just sit back and accept it, no I don’t think so he would be creating merry hell if it was against one of his players.

I’m worried about Suarez he seems to be a target for referees, supporters and the FA and I wouldn’t be surprised if he chucks it and moves to a different country who appreciate his talent. Suarez has been superb for us but he needs a bit of support up front and I would like to see us try and sign another striker in January.

Fair play to Kenny keeping the partnership of Agger and Skrtel in the team, because it must have been very tempting to bring back Jamie Carragher into the team. The defence has been playing really well making the opposition struggle to find the net against us.

Our midfield has been industrious and producing chances for our strikers and hopefully we will have Gerrard back soon to add to our midfield options. Jordan Henderson started the season slowly but I see him getting better with every game. I would like to see Dirk Kuyt play more as he has been left on the bench in a lot of games recently, I think he is a major player for us and gives us so much energy, but this shows our strength in depth when the likes of Kuyt can’t get a start.

I’m still not that convinced with Andy Carroll although he has been working really hard in recent games but I’m still looking for more link up play from him and to attack crosses more, but hopefully it will come I used to slate Lucas on his performances and never thought he would make it at Liverpool and look how wrong I was.

We have been on a great run recently until Monday night and I think it will just be a minor setback. We have been playing really well this season and playing some great football and the only poor performance was the defeat from Tottenham. When you think how badly we were playing last season and the way we are playing now, it is like night and day. Some of the football now is terrific, but we have to remember to be patient as we are work in progress.

I’m disappointed with some supporters and their comments after the Fulham match with the criticism I heard. Supporters should support the team but there seems too many ready to criticise when we suffer a bad result regardless of the performance.

I am happy with the way things are progressing and we are still on course for a top four spot and a mouth watering semi-final against Manchester City so keep the faith.

Torres back at Anfield in January?

What the heck is this? Read it from Mirror writer, David Maddock’s article today. First of all, Chelsea won’t sanction such a move even though it was a loan deal.

Chelsea paid Liverpool £50 million in transfer fee for him in January and was warming the Stamford Bridge bench ever since.

   “His move to Chelsea has been a disaster hasn’t it? Unmitigated, debilitating disaster. He left Liverpool in search of honours he said, in search of a more powerful team and the bright lights of big competition. He found the Carling Cup.” – excerpt from Mirror

As all the Anfield faithful has brandish him as “Judas” when he left us for the Blues. The question is “Will Liverpool’s supporters welcome him back after one year?”.

We can’t hide from the facts that Kenny Dalglish would certainly welcome an additional striker to bolster his attacking option up front. Luis Suarez is a top class player, but he is not an out and out goalscorer like Torres. Andy Carroll hasn’t looked like a goalscorer either.

Liverpool and Chelsea are fighting for the Champions League spot come this May. It wouldn’t wise to lend a potent weapon to your closes enemy. Unless, the Blues has agreed to loan him out to Liverpool until the end of the league season without the option to recalled or revoked his loan tenure at Anfield. This option can worth to be consider by Dalglish but it’s a long shot.

We certainly don’t know what has really gone wrong with Torres at Stamford Bridge? And most of us doesn’t have the interest to investigate further. Let bygones be bygones as the Reds are moving forward and whoever Liverpool bringing in the coming transfer window, hopefully can strengthen the team. Just hope it’s wasn’t a Fernando Torres.

Fulham 1-0 Liverpool Match Report

Liverpool was hoping to keep their good run of form going in this testing trip to Craven Cottage. Liverpool had good memories of their last visit to Fulham when they had a convincing win with Maxi netting a hat-trick. Fulham have been unlucky with a couple of defeats in their last two games and with former Reds’ players Riise and Danny Murphy in their side the home side would be well up for the contest.

THE TEAM
Dalglish brought Suarez and Spearing into the side, Spearing making his first league start of the season for Liverpool to replace the injured Lucas. Jamie Carragher had to be content with a place on the bench as Dalglish stuck with Agger and Skrtel in the centre of defence. Andy Carroll was given another start as he looks to find his form in front of goal. Bellamy and Henderson also started as Dalglish left Kuyt, Downing and the unlucky Maxi on the bench.

THE MATCH
Liverpool started the game with great possession with most players getting an early touch of the ball, but it was Fulham that almost took an early lead when Dembele got behind the Liverpool defence from a clever pass from Ruiz but Reina came out sharply and made a great blocking save.

Liverpool had the next chance when Adam’s volleyed effort was deflected to safety. Then Carroll had a shot saved by Schwarzer as Liverpool continued to press. Schwarzer made another good save from a low shot by Adam.

Fulham looked threatening going forward too and Reina made a great save on the stretch from a great effort from Dembele and shortly after Reina had to be alert to an ambitious volley from Dempsey.

With the game going from end to end Henderson saw his curling effort come off the inside of Schwarzer’s far post and away to safety. Then a great run from Suarez to the bye line was then cut back to Carroll but his shot was well blocked to safety.

It was amazing how the score remained 0-0 at the half with all the chances that were produced by both teams.

Liverpool started the second half on the offensive with Agger having a 30 yard effort deflected wide before Enrique being denied his first Liverpool goal by Schwarzer. Chances were still being created at both ends with Zamora being thwarted by Agger before Adam’s surging run was ended by a late challenge by Senderos on the edge of the box. Bellamy’s free-kick was blasted into the defensive wall with Agger heading wide from the resulting corner.

Johnson played a great pass through to Bellamy but he dragged his shot well wide of the target. Liverpool thought they had taken the lead when Suarez brilliantly put the ball in the Fulham net from a clever pass by Enrique but his effort was ruled out for offside.

But the game changed in the 71st minute when Jay Spearing was shown a straight red card after crashing into a tackle on Dembele. Dalglish brought on Kuyt and Downing for Carroll and Bellamy just after the sending off.

Dempsey saw an effort come off the Liverpool bar with Reina beaten before Downing was denied by a brilliant save from Schwarzer onto the post. But Liverpool were stunned inside the last 10 minutes when a Danny Murphy shot was spilled by Reina which saw Dempsey fire the rebound into the net from close range.

Liverpool tried in vain in the remaining minutes to salvage a point as Fulham held on leaving Liverpool frustrated at the outcome of a game that had many chances and many controversial refereeing decisions.

SUMMARY
I thought Dalglish sent out a very attacked minded team and I was pleased to see Bellamy and Carroll starting along with the impressive partnership of Agger and Skrtel keeping their place at the expense of Carragher. I expected Spearing to replace Lucas in the midfield with his style of play. Liverpool played very well in what was a very good game with Fulham adding to the spectacle as the game ebbed and flowed. Another night of bad luck and missed chances which are proving costly in our quest for a Champions League place. But I’m sorry I have to say the referee was no “Friend” of us as every big decision went against us, the sending off was ridiculous as no Fulham player appealed for anything in what was a terrific tackle from Spearing. Senderos should have been shown red and Liverpool could have been awarded a couple of penalties one with Adam running into the box to be taken out by Senderos then Suarez going round Hangeland only to be impeded and Suarez puts the ball into the net only to be flagged for offside when he was onside. Suarez once again getting no protection from a referee. But we did lose the match because our Mr. Dependable Pepe Reina made a big mistake which cost us the game. I am very frustrated with the missed chances and the referee but I am proud of the performance and if we keep playing like this we will do ok.

Man Of The Match - Skrtel - defended superbly all night and made some great clearing challenges and headers.

Liverpool FC return to London on Monday night with the glorious memories of last season’s trip to Craven Cottage still fresh.

Damien Duff looks doubtful for Fulham's Monday night game at Craven Cottage.

The Republic of Ireland international was forced off in the first half of their Europa League 1-0 defeat at FC Twente following a recurrence of a calf injury.

Mousa Dembele also limped off but could feature at Craven Cottage, while Clint Dempsey should return from a thigh complaint.

Bryan Ruiz comes back into contention after being cup-tied against former club Twente.

The loss of midfielder Lucas through long-term injury provoked a somewhat hysterical reaction at Anfield.

The Brazilian has developed into an excellent player, but his absence should not derail his team’s recent upsurge.

Expect Jay Spearing to rise to prominence as a replacement, while Maxi Rodriguez will look to build on last season’s Craven Cottage hat-trick.

Fulham may have to revert to a defensive formation or suffer the consequences of an open contest as they did in their last meeting with the Merseysiders.

Rumour Mill: Liverpool wants 21-year-old Dutch as Lucas replacement

Just as Lucas Leiva, Liverpool FC's most underrated player had started showing signs of maturity, bossing even the best midfielders in the Premier League, he suffered a knee injury against Chelsea in the Carling Cup quarterfinal at Stamford Bridge.

But with Lucas sustaining damage to his knee during 2-0 win over Chelsea in the Carling Cup, Kenny Dalglish’s hand looks like being forced much sooner than expected. The club announced the defensive midfielder will be ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Liverpool have been alarmed by the loss and have thus far only revoked the loan clause of Jonjo Shelvey to bring the player back to Anfield. However, Shelvey is clearly not a player in the mould of Lucas and was excelling in his short spell with the Tangerines in a more attacking role.

Leroy Fer only joined FC Twente during the summer, following three seasons with Feyenoord, in which he established himself as vice-captain and earned a call up to the Dutch national team.

It's thought a bid in the region of around £10 million would be enough secure his services, and with Fer being at home anywhere in the back four as well as defensive midfield, he would provide manager Dalglish with plenty of options.

Liverpool will play Manchester City in the two legged semi-final of the Carling Cup.

The first leg, which will take place at the Etihad Stadium is scheduled to take place in the week commencing January 9, 2012, with the return at Anfield the week beginning January 23.

Carling Cup: Liverpool stormed into the last four

Liverpool cruised into the semi-finals of the Carling Cup courtesy of a well-deserved 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

Having found the back of the net in the league meeting less than a fortnight prior, Maxi Rodriguez returned to haunt Chelsea in London, opening the scoring on 58 minutes with the assist once again coming from Craig Bellamy.

Andy Carroll had earlier missed a first-half penalty, but the Reds doubled their advantage four minutes later with Bellamy again the provider as this time his dangerous free-kick was powerfully headed home for a first senior goal by Martin Kelly.

An injury to Lucas Leiva was the only sour note on a night to savour for Liverpool, whose quest to reach a first final since 2007 remains firmly on track.

With the final whistle against Manchester City having been blown just 50 hours earlier, Kenny Dalglish opted to make seven changes to the side he fielded at Anfield on Sunday.

Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City Match Report

The fixtures don’t come any tougher than playing against pace setters Manchester City. City remain unbeaten so far this season going into this match and have been scoring goals for fun in the league. But Liverpool was on a decent run of form too, remaining unbeaten in nine games, and with a superb victory last time out last Sunday at Chelsea.

THE TEAM

Kenny made two changes from the team that won at Chelsea last Sunday with Downing and Henderson coming back into the side at the expense of Bellamy and Maxi. Bellamy was left out due to the tragic news earlier in the day of the death of his friend and international manager Gary Speed. Maxi was just unlucky to be left out especially after scoring at Chelsea.

THE MATCH

This eagerly awaited clash was paled into comparison by the tragic news of the death of the much liked and respected Welsh manager Gary Speed who died earlier in the day at the age of 42. A minutes silence was observed before kick-off in respect of the very talented manager, and also for the passing of Liverpool’s reserve goalkeeper Brad Jones’s son who died last weekend at the age of 5 after losing his battle with leukaemia.

Once the football got started it was City who started the livelier side and in the 6^th minute Richards shot over after a good turn. But then Kompany was booked for a late challenge on Suarez as the City defender let Suarez know that he was in for a tough afternoon.

A slack back pass by Enrique almost cost Liverpool dear as Aguero raced clear only to be thwarted by the alert Reina as he came racing out of his box to block the striker.

But then the visitors took the lead in the 31^st minute when Kompany headed a Silva corner just inside Reina’s far post followed by wild celebrations at the away supporters section of the ground. But their celebrations were short lived when within a minute Adam tried his luck from 30 yards only to see his effort deflect off Lescott and into the net with Hart wrong footed.

This goal galvanised the home side and Adam almost gave them the lead but for a great save from the right foot of Hart as he looked to be going the wrong way. Glen Johnson saw a curling effort just miss the far post as Liverpool looked for a second goal. But City almost scored right on the half-time whistle with a lightning break which ended with Reina making a good save at his near post.

Liverpool started the second half on the front foot and Kuyt was unlucky with a header from a deflected Downing cross. Mancini brought on Balotelli for Nasri as he saw his side starting to struggle, but it was Liverpool who continued to threaten and Hart had to make another terrific save from a bouncing Downing effort. Then Lescott just managed to clear from Kuyt during a goal line scramble.

City were reduced to 10 men for the last 10 minutes when substitute Balotelli saw a second yellow after appearing to elbow Skrtel. Dalglish responded by bringing on Carroll for the remaining minutes as he looked for the win. But City almost stole a winner but for good goalkeeping from Reina allowing defenders to get back on the line to clear the danger through Skrtel.

But then in stoppage time Carroll produced a powerful header which looked goal bound only to thwarted by Joe Hart at full stretch, the rebound fell to Suarez who’s shot was superbly saved again by Hart at his near post, the follow up effort from Downing was blazed over, and City held on for a point in their toughest test so far in the league.

SUMMARY

A superb match by two heavyweights, it was a pity but very understandable that Bellamy was left out for this one, and I believe Downing was brought in for Maxi because Downing has a bit more pace to thwart the danger of Richards marauding forward. City started well and had us under pressure in the early stages and I thought Reina was a bit fortunate when he blocked Aguero after Enrique’s poor pass, it looked like the ball struck his arm. It was great to see us respond so quickly from going behind although it was rather fortunate the way we equalised. But as the game wore on the stronger we got and Adam and Lucas were superb once again, with our defence handling the quality of the City attacking threat very well. Agger and Skrtel played superbly, with Reina making some vital saves. Johnson was a threat going forward and Enrique and Downing linked up to great effect down the left. Kuyt worked his socks off as per usual but Suarez was left a bit isolated at times and given some rough treatment. I was a bit disappointed with Henderson, the game seemed to pass him by. We were a bit unlucky not to win the match as we had the better chances, but I would have taken a draw before the match and I was proud of the performance against a very strong City side.

Man Of The Match – Lucas – his best game yet, he was everywhere, breaking up City attacks, starting attacks, his passing was superb, never gave a ball away and covered every blade of grass.

Rumour Mill: Liverpool pondering £20M move for Brazilian whizkid

January transfer window has been fast approaching, the press rumour mill are starting to warm up again with reports of possible transfer targets from the Premier League’s big-spenders.

As usual, Liverpool are likely to be linked to host of names, and have already been rumoured to be targeting Michel Bastos, Carlos Tevez and Seydou Keita.

Another player Kenny Dalglish is said to be interested in is Sao Paulo’s Brazilian midfielder Lucas, full name Lucas Rodrigues Moura da Silva. According to reports, the Reds are prepared to offer £20 million for the 19-year-old, who is also a target for Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan.

Is he worth £20 million? After spending so much on recruiting young talents in the last transfer window with the likes of Jordan Henderson, Sebastion Coates and Andy Carroll, Fenway Sports Group shown they are willing to splash out big funds yet again on youngsters with potential.

Preview: Liverpool v Manchester City

Liverpool 2-1 win over Chelsea vaulted them into the top four of the Premier League table, but their title run does not get any easier as they host the league leaders Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

City is coming off a disappointing 2-1 loss to Serie A side Napoli on Tuesday, but in the Premier League, they are on fire.

City has won their last six league games and destroyed Manchester United 6-1 at Old Trafford. Liverpool will have an opportunity to prove they are again among England's elite on Saturday when they host one of the most talented teams in the world.

Manchester City have only won one of their last 12 Premier League games against Liverpool (W1 D5 L6).

The Citizens haven’t won at Anfield in their last eight Premier League visits (D2 L6).

Andy Carroll has scored four goals in five Premier League games against Manchester City.

Man City have now scored two or more goals in each of their last 14 Premier League games, a record for the division.

Sergio Aguero has 10 goals in 11 Premier League appearances this season.

Chelsea 1-2 Liverpool Match Report

With Liverpool stuttering with draws at home and Chelsea’s recent poor form, this match was vital for both teams to get a positive result so they keep in touch with the leading group. Liverpool have had good results against Chelsea in recent years and they managed to do the double over them last season. Dalglish is unbeaten as manager against Chelsea so confidence was good going into the match.

THE TEAM

Kenny made three changes to his side with Bellamy, Kuyt and Maxi making his first league start of the season, Andy Carroll had to settle for a place on the bench alongside summer signings Downing and Jordan Henderson, the fit again Jamie Carragher was also named as a substitute. Former Liverpool favourites Meireles and Torres were also named as substitutes for Chelsea.

THE MATCH

Liverpool started on the attack with Maxi making two good early runs. Chelsea reacted with Mata volleying dangerously across goal. Then Mikel fired over from 25 yards.

Liverpool were looking dangerous on the attack and Bellamy combined well with Suarez but Cech thwarted them. Drogba looked to have scored from a free-kick but the ball rippled the net from behind.

The next chance came when Kuyt dispossessed Terry before Suarez failed to find Bellamy and Maxi at the back post. But then in the 34^th minute Liverpool broke the deadlock when Adam dispossessed Mikel before Bellamy took over, executing a one-two with Suarez before finding Maxi on the edge of the 6 yard box who finished clinically before celebrating in front of the jubilant travelling support.

Liverpool almost made it two when Lucas sent Suarez clear but his attempted cross deflected off Luiz into the side netting.

Liverpool maybe felt they should have had more than a one goal lead after their superb first half performance. Chelsea made one change at the break with Sturridge replacing Mikel.

Chelsea started the second half with intent and Drogba saw an effort bend over. Then Mata danced into the box before Skrtel ushered away the danger. But the game had changed and Liverpool were struggling to get forward now and Chelsea got their reward with the equaliser when Sturridge beat Reina from close range from a scuffed Malouda shot.

Seconds later Reina pulled off the save of the match from a glancing header by Ivanovic. Dalglish brought on Henderson for Bellamy as he tried to strengthen the midfield that was starting to struggle to stem the Chelsea tide.

The change did seem to make a difference although Liverpool were still not threatening the Chelsea goal. Malouda had a great chance in the 75^th minute but he volleyed wide from close range. Then a great run down the right by Henderson ended up with Kuyt firing just wide.

Just as it looked like the match would end a draw, Adam sprayed a pass out to the right to Johnson who skinned Cole before racing into the penalty area and then superbly slotted a left foot shot past the helpless Cech. Liverpool held out for the remaining minutes to record an important win.

SUMMARY

Surprised to see Maxi come back into the side, but what a masterstroke, with the Argentine scoring the first goal. I was also pleased to see Bellamy and Kuyt start the match with their work rate and pace. Liverpool played superb especially in the first half with their pressing game and the way the team continued to work for each other when under pressure in the second half was tremendous. The defence was resilient and Lucas and Adam combined brilliantly in the midfield with Kuyt tireless as ever and Bellamy was always a threat and was brilliant at the first goal. Suarez caused the Chelsea defence all sorts of problems, but overall it was a great team performance and a deserved victory.

Man Of The Match – Adam – best performance this season, passed superbly and worked his socks off, played a crucial part in both goals.
