Rumour Mill: Liverpool gearing up for a defender swoop

Kenny Dalglish is working hard to shipped out the deadwoods at Anfield to refill his transfer kitty for at least one more new player before the new season kick-off.

Liverpool FC are weighting their option on moving Joe Cole to QPR and are keen to reduce their wage load. Milan Jovanovic, who are certain to be moving to the Belgian club after Liverpool agreed terms with Anderlecht on Tuesday evening.

A woeful pre-season defensive display from Liverpool FC which saw them leaking three goals each against Guangdong FC, Malaysia XI, Hull City, Galatasaray and Valerenga. With Martin Skrtel out on a calf injury, the 26-year-old played every minute of the Merseyside club's Premier League campaign last season, but has suffered with the injury during pre-season.

Dalglish would like to sign a new centre-back as cover for his team and Scott Dann and Ryan Shawcross names has been recently linked with a move to Anfield.

Elsewhere, reports has indicated Hull City manager Nigel Peearson are interested in signing Liverpool centre-back Daniel Ayala. The Tigers have made six signings already this summer but are still keen to add the 20-year-old to their ranks.

Dalglish is believed to rate Ayala in the £1million bracket but it is not known whether Hull agree with that valuation.

Now signing a new centre-back would be the top priority for Dalglish as Jamie Carragher and Sotirios Kyrgiakos are over 30-years-old. While Daniel Agger are injury prone and only left Academy graduate Andre Wisdom who recently signed an extension contract as cover plus Danny Wilson available for selection. If the Hull’s story are to be true, then Liverpool are freeing up the centre-back slot for a new player soon.

The Liverpool manager had just announced that Steven Gerard may return earlier than expected from his groin injury, and entered a conversation with a journalist about how the club had earlier suggested the captain may not return until October, when the lights failed.

Liverpool midfielder set for Loftus Road

Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish is understood to be interested in bolstering the defensive line with a new centre-back and a left-back before the new season kick-off in 10 days.

With Milan Jovanovic shipped out to Belgian outfit, Anderlecht on free transfer and the Serbian forward has free up Liverpool FC bulging wage bill.

According from source close to the club, another midfielder, Joe Cole looks set to return to West London to join Queens Park Rangers on loan for the 2011/12 season.

The Barclays Premier League new boys are hoping to strike a deal with the Reds over the England midfielder, who has failed to impress since joining from Chelsea last summer. It is understood Cole is currently in talks with the London club.

Liverpool are keen to reduce their wage load to finance further summer signings, and shifting Cole would free up around £90,000 per week to put towards Kenny Dalglish’s transfer kitty. However, there are few clubs who could afford such sums meaning John W. Henry may have to fork out some form of compensation or contribution in order to allow the player to move on.

Liverpool agreed Milan deal

Liverpool confirmed this evening they have reached agreement with Anderlecht for the transfer of Milan Jovanovic.

Anderlecht have struck a deal to sign Milan Jovanovic from Liverpool. The Belgian club announced the news on their website and said the transfer hinges on Jovanovic passing a medical on Thursday.

Jovanovic joined Liverpool on a free transfer from Standard Liège last summer, having impressed the then manager Rafael Benítez, but was unable to establish himself in the Premier League and last started a game for Liverpool in January. Anderlecht have not paid a fee for him.

The Serbia forward had been a huge success in Belgium with his previous club, boasting an impressive goals-per-game ratio and catching the eye in the Champions League group stages in 2009.

The Anderlecht general manager, Herman van Holsbeeck, described negotiations with Liverpool as "long but fruitful" and spoke of Jovanovic's "undeniable talent" and "requisite experience" being key qualities.

Rumour Mill: Time to patch up Liverpool defence

After his team's woeful defensive display in pre-season, Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is looking to beef up his options at the back and is reportedly considering a bid for Stoke City skipper Ryan Shawcross.

The Reds conceded 12 goals in four pre-season games and Dalglish is well aware that if his side is to match expectations of a top-four finish, he'll have to strengthen the department.

Shawcross has been a regular for Stoke over the past four seasons and has helped manager Tony Pulis build his defence at the Britannia Stadium. He also scores his fair share of goals for a centre-back. The 23-year-old harbours hopes of a place in the England national squad and a move to Anfield will help him do that.

Shawcross could be of immense help to a Liverpool midfield, as it consists of Daniel Agger whose injury problems make him unreliable and Martin Skrtel who has a calf problem and missed the entire pre-season. And with both Jamie Carragher and Sotirios Kyrgiakos on the wrong side of 30, a young addition to the backline becomes a necessity.

Shawcross isn’t the only available option for Liverpool to choose from. Birmingham City's central defender Scott Dann, pursued most of this transfer window by the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, is reportedly set to be bid for by the Reds as they look to bolster their defensive ranks.

A fee of around £12 million has been mooted as Birmingham may be forced to sell to recoup some money after owner Carson Yeung's assets were frozen following his arrest in Hong Kong.

Should he stay or should he go?

I ran a public poll last week with the title: “Should Alberto Aquilani remained at Liverpool FC?” and accumulated 98 votes on it. Many still thinks Aquilani deserves another shot at Anfield.

Yesterday match against Valerenga which ended in a 3-3 draw in Oslo and the Italian international played a major part in Liverpool coming from behind to drew level at 2-2 in the second half.

The press has linked him back to Italy, with Fiorentina and AC Milan waiting on the wing to sign the Liverpool playmaker on a season loan.

Kenny Dalglish has refused to rule the 27-year-old out of his plans on Merseyside, but with Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam joining Steven Gerrard, Lucas and Jay Spearing at Liverpool this summer, the exit door could be open for Aquilani.

Milan have been linked with a summer swoop for the Italy international. While Galliani insists there are no plans at the moment to try and bring in Aquilani, he admits the 27-year-old is the type of player they are targeting.

   “Currently we are not looking for him, but we could speak of it,”

“He's a midfielder with the characteristics that we are looking for so, like with other players in his role, he could be of interest.”

Pre-season: Valerenga 3-3 Liverpool

Goals from Andy Carroll and Daniel Agger (2) secured a 3-3 draw with Valerenga as grief-stricken Oslo hosted our penultimate friendly ahead of the 2011-12 campaign.

Early strikes from Lars Iver Strand and Fegor Ogude put the Norwegian side ahead but Liverpool clawed it back to lead 3-2 before a last-gasp goal from Mohammed Fellah gave the home side a share of the spoils.

Kenny Dalglish can take the return of Agger, Glen Johnson, and Pepe Reina as positives, while Stewart Downing's delivery was impressively accurate, notably in assisting Carroll's goal just before half-time.

A header from Agger levelled proceedings before the centre-back netted again late on to give the Reds what seemed set to be a hard fought victory - but it wasn't to be.

The game was preceded by a stirring rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone, the lyrics of which have rarely sounded so poignant following the death of 77 people here in last month's terrorist attacks. The teams then made their way onto the pitch wearing black armbands and, after a minute's silence, every Liverpool player carried a solitary flower to the Valerenga end - a touching show of unity from a football club all too aware of its sizeable fanbase in this part of the world.

Then to the football. Liverpool immediately looked sharper than previously witnessed in pre-season, with Downing wandering down the right and Charlie Adam tucked in on the left.
